Work Text:
The day had come. Merlin didn't know why now, why after all this time. But he knew it was happening. Arthur would return today.
Mist covered the entire country. There were worried newscasts and worried headlines in papers. Three days long the land was in chaos. No one could see much.
The day had come. Arthur stepped out of the lake, as beautiful as he had always been. His sword found a way to him. The once and future king had awoken. Merlin's lover had finally awoken.
Merlin dropped his disguise. The mist cleared as he kissed the man he loved. Arthur had finally awoken. Centuries of loneliness and longing had faded. Arthur was here.
"Has it been long?" Arthur asked softly.
"Too long," Merlin whispered, trying not to cry.
"I'm sorry," Arthur said in a gentle voice.
They kissed each other again.
Merlin didn't know if it was good for the world that the legend about Arthur's return came true. But it was good for him. Right now that was all that mattered. They would worry about the fate of the world tomorrow. Right now Merlin just wanted to hold the man he loved. He deserved it, he thought.
