Black Dog of London Town

Summary:

Lightning strikes overhead as the Black Dog has arrived in London, assigned with an important task.

This story is a fan sequal! After reading "Unexpected Outcomes", the idea came into my mind and I couldn't stop myself. READ THAT STORY FIRST!

Work Text:

A Black Dog watched from a distance. Her golden eyes fixated on the scene in front of her. The Somerset house, full of people, except they weren't partying like they had been before, the Black Dog notices. No. They were just standing around. Despite not being able to see clearly, the Black Dog knew death was approaching quickly. It was her job to know. The Black Dog sat and watched. She wasn't needed yet, but in due time, she will be assigned to complete an important task.

St James' Cemetery was busy. The Black Dog watched the funeral from a distance as she stood by a lone headstone. Thunder rumbled through the clouded sky of London. A dark spot appeared on the pale surface of the gravestone before a wet drop landed on her nose. The Black Dog looked up. The occasional drops began to increase and soon rain began to fall harder as the world around her began to speed up. And before she knew it, she was alone. A bolt of lightning lit up the sky. It was time to complete her task.

The Black Dog approached the grave, staring at the fresh dirt. She sniffed the muddy ground. Rain pelted her midnight coat as lightning flashed overhead. She looked up to see a young woman. Her [h/c] hair cascading onto her shoulders. Despite the downpour, the girl appeared dry. The Black Dog approached her.

"Are you here to take me away?" She asked. The Black Dog's tail beginning to wag. The woman knelt down, reaching a hand out, placing it on the Black Dog's head. A look of surprise flashed across her face.

"I can touch you!" She said. "I... I haven't been able to touch anyone since..." She paused, looking down at the grave. The Black Dog whined softly nuzzling the woman's hand.

"Before I go, could you do something for me?" The Black Dog tilted her head. "Please... look after Jacob for me." The Black Dog licked the woman's hand, confirming her request.

Light began to seep its way through the clouds. You looked down at the Black Dog. You could still see the rain falling on its fur, but you no longer felt the chill of the stormy air like before. You felt... warm.

"[Your name]?" You turned, recognizing the voice.

"Mac?" You rushed forward, the gravestones fading as you met the embrace of your former friend... no... he was no longer a former. He was here. Mac smiled at you.

"I wish you hadn't joined me so soon." Mac said. His smile falling slightly. You looked away.

"I'm sorry..." You whispered. Mac placed a hand on your shoulder.

"Don't be." He said. He suddenly chuckled.

"And didn't I tell you that Mr. Frye fancied you?" You playfully slap his hand away.

"Oh, shut up!"

The Black Dog watched at the young woman left before sitting down. The lightning had subsided and the thunder softened, but the rain still fell. Tears of joy to some, but of sadness to others.

TWO WEEKS LATER.

"Jacob?"

The Black Dog watched a beaten man exit the vault. Her black coat concealing her in the shadows, allowing her to watch undetected. The young woman who had been waiting outside gasped. The man lifted his sweat covered face, the death like pallor and darkening eyes clear to see through the failing light.

"My god, Jacob. What has he done to you?" She shrieked as she ran to meet him. Hooking his arm firmly around her shoulder she straightened, taking his weight. "My god look at you!" She strained as her hand fell to where he clutched so tightly at his now blood soaked clothing. Jacob's head lifted, the slightest suggestion of a weak smile tugging at his pale lips.

"It's done, Evie" he husked, "It's over... All of it." She paused her step a moment before tentatively nodding thoughtfully.

"And Starrick?" She asked.

"Dead."

"I see." She took a ragged breath in and beginning to walk him slowly out toward the cemetery. "And you, Jacob?"

"I thought I was going to die in there Evie." he croaked painfully, his face crumpling "I thought I wanted to die in there too." Evie's face fell.

"I've been pretty lost lately, haven't I? I'm sorry. You were right, though. It needed to be done. I needed to do that for [your name]'s sake. Hopefully she can rest peacefully now, eh?" Jacob let out a shuttering breath. "God, I miss her, Evie." Evie gave an understanding nod

"I know you do, Brother. She would be incredibly proud of you, Jacob. As am I. Come now, let's get you back to the train and seen to. It's been one hell of a day..."

The Black Dog continued to watch. [Your name] was proud, she knew that for certain. She got to her paws and silently following the twins. Jacob Frye. The name echoed through her head. It was a name she wouldn't forget. A dark shadow was cast over the young man, one only she could see. It was her job to see. She wasn't needed yet, however, but in due time, she will be assigned to complete yet another important task.
