Work Text:
The ballroom was just another room in the castle, one that Merwyn loved. Often times she was left behind when it came to making choices. So the ballroom was one of her favorite places: she could watch her people, read her books, and imagine what life would be like when she could finally make choices.
Dancing alone was alright, but it wasn't what she desired. She wanted to have her people with her, she wanted to make the choices, she wanted to rule. She had so many thoughts and idea that she felt she could bring into their world that she could bring to her people. It was difficult for her to sit back and just look pretty. That wasn't what she wanted, that wasn't the life she wanted.
She didn't just want to be a princess, she wanted to be a queen.
She wanted to be a ruler.
There was nothing she felt she could really do to change things, she didn't know of any at least. She just wanted to make changes, she wanted to be seen as someone who had good ideas and could make choices. She was desperate to make the changes she felt would serve her people the best.
Merwyn was sitting in the ballroom with a book in hand while she watched out the window. She could see her subjects walking about, talking to one another. She wondered what they spoke of, how they lived their lives. She could truly only imagine, her family and the guards didn't let her go down amongst the people. It wasn't 'proper' for royalty to walk amongst those who were 'lesser'. Merwyn didn't necessarily see it that way, she didn't believe she was better than they were. She just was born higher.
Day in and day out Merwyn watched her people from the ballroom windows, she dreamed of inviting them within. She daydreamed dances of all the citizens highborn and low. She watched the chandeliers as they caught the light of the sun as the days passed her by. It was clear to her that until she did something about it there would be no way of changing her predicament or the lives of her people.
So Merwyn set out to try something no one had done before.
She was going to plan a ball for all her people to attend, from the lowest of the low to the highest of the high. She wanted this to be a historical moment, one that no one else had tried to do. She wanted to be a moment everyone would remember for years to come.
A fairytale day for the children of squaller, and a day for adults to relax. She knew they had the food, for now at least. She also knew that they had the room. Behind the back of her family she began to plan a fantastic ball for her people, everyone was invited. She planned to sneak into the town and pass out invites when everything was officially planned out. She planned to go to the cooks and ask them to make a grand meal for everyone. She thought of treats and meals that everyone would enjoy, or so she hoped.
She danced along the ballroom with the visons of elves beside her.
A smile was plastered to her face as she spun about, her beautifully flowing dress flowing around her, twisting about her body in beautiful spirals. She looked back through the window. "I am doing this for us Solryth. I am going to bring us to what we should be, I will bring us to greatness."
She knew there was no voice in return, but the feeling that ran over her made her truly believe Solryth was speaking back to her. She returned to her planning and reading. She was sitting in the ballroom when Alvitir walked in. "Sister, what are you doing here?"
"We should have a ball brother." She exclaimed as he looked down at her.
"We have too much to worry about, a ball isn't worth the time. Or our recourses. Honestly Merwyn, get back to your books. You tell me all the time how you believe you could be a good advisor for me, but you are just a princess. Your role isn't to make any plans. Merwyn I am in charge, you are not. Just get back to your books, prepare yourself when it is time for a marriage."
Merwyn lowered her head but she knew he wouldn't say a word back to her even if she fought with him. He rolled his eyes at her as he walked back to get some work done. The guards that kept an eye on her stayed back guarding the doors and watching as she danced about the room or read her books. She continued to plan for one night of perfectness for everyone in the kingdom. She wasn't fully sure how she could trick everyone in the castle to allow the townsfolk in but she planned to do something.
She continued to plan the ball, she found musicians to hire and found a way to write as many invitations as she possibly could. It was now figuring out how to pass them out that she knew she would struggle with a bit. However Merwyn wasn't going to just give up, she managed to get past the guards late one night slipping through hidden doors. With her hood up she snuck into town slipping the invitations under doors and through open windows.
The morning was a buzz with the idea of a ball in the castle. The idea of being invited by the princess herself was wonderful. Merwyn knew there would be punishment from her brother for acting out like this but she was determined to give her people just one night to be themselves and to enjoy themselves. She had it all planned, the cooks and servers had to listen to her and by the time the guests arrived that she managed to get in after yelling at a few of the guards because she was the princess and they had to listen she finally had many of the towns people within the castle walls to celebrate and dance.
Alvitir was furious, but she danced throughout the night meeting with her people welcoming them wealthy or in squalor. She smiled as she looked up into the sky. "I did it for us Solryth." She whispered as she looked back to her people. It was perfect, even for one single night.
