Work Text:
Sam had told Bucky that it was a terrible idea to visit the mountains during winter, when the weather was calling for a snow storm, but Bucky was positive that the weather people were just making it all up.
Now, here they were, stuck in the mountains where it was blizzarding outside and Sam’s miserable because he can’t even enjoy this so-called vacation.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” Sam mumbles angrily to himself as he walks into the cabin. He shivers, still feeling the cold on him. He doesn’t even like the cold weather. How did Bucky convince him to come out here? Sam shakes his body to get some of the snow off. “Buck, where the hell are you? I’ve got some words!”
Sam looks up when he hears footsteps, and blinks when he sees a man standing in the kitchen, someone who is certainly not Bucky. He’s got a cup of hot chocolate in his hands. He looks just as confused as Sam feels. Sam blinks as they stare at each other. “You’re not Bucky…”
“‘M not. I’m Steve,” the blonde says. He blinks as well. “Who are you?”
“I’m not telling you my name. You could be a serial killer,” Sam instantly retorts.
The man, Steve, huffs. “I’m not a serial killer,”
“That’s something a serial killer would say,” Sam mumbles.
“You know a lot about serial killers or something?” Steve asks, raising his eyebrows.
“I may or may not watch crime documentaries in my spare time. What’s it to you?” Sam asks.
Steve chuckles. “Dude, no need to be so hostile. I mean, you’re the one who walked into my cabin…”
“What?” Sam asks, his eyes widen. “No, no, no. This is…” He looks around in a panic. This definitely isn’t his and Bucky’s cabin. The couch is placed differently. Their TV was not hung up on the wall like that. “Fuck.” He groans, throwing his head back. “This is so embarrassing.”
“It’s okay. The cabins all look the same,” Steve says.
“It’s just… It’s really fucking cold out there. I was kind of desperate to get out of the awful cold weather. I’m so sorry about this,” Sam says. “I’m sure my cabin isn’t that far from yours. I’ll just…” He puts his hand on the doorknob, ready to make a mad dash for it. He absolutely cannot tell Bucky about this situation. Bucky will never let him live it down if he finds out about this.
“Wait-”
Sam stops, and he looks back over at Steve, but he doesn’t say anything.
“Why don’t you just stay?” Steve asks, surprising Sam. “I mean-” He clears his throat. “It’s quite literally blizzarding outside. You’re just going to get yourself lost in the snow, and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I knew something happened to you because I let you go back out there. It’s too dangerous.”
Sam blinks as he stares at Steve some more. “I-”
“I promise I’m not a serial killer,” Steve adds, which earns a laugh from Sam.
“I mean, I guess I could stay for a little bit longer. The thought of going back in the cold makes me want to actually die. It’s just… Do you have any service? I need to tell my friend I’ll be getting back late.”
“It’s been dodgy. Sometimes I’ll have service, and sometimes I won’t,” Steve tells him.
Sam frowns, and pulls his phone out of his pocket. He goes to Bucky’s contact. He tries calling him, but it goes straight to voicemail, which means there’s no cell service. Sam curses to himself out loud, before stuffing his phone back into his pocket. He looks over at Steve. “I mean, are you sure-?”
“Yes I’m sure,” Steve says. “Under one condition. You have to tell me your name.”
Sam rolls his eyes. “Okay, fine. My name’s Sam,” he says.
“Sam,” Steve repeats, and he grins. “Nice to meet you, Sam.”
“Odd way to meet someone if you ask me,” Sam can’t help saying out loud.
Steve makes hot chocolate for Sam, which Sam takes gratefully. He’s been inside for at least ten minutes, and his hands are still freezing from being outside. Luckily, Steve takes him to sit by the fireplace.
Steve isn’t so bad to end up stuck in a random cabin with. It could have been much worse. Steve’s nice, and he’s sweet, and he constantly asks if Sam’s okay every five minutes. Sam’s definitely doing a lot better than he was when he was outside, where it was absolutely freezing.
Finally after an hour of being at Steve’s cabin, Sam’s phone starts going off. He immediately reaches for his phone, seeing that it’s Bucky calling him. Sam sighs in relief, and answers the phone. “Bucky?”
“Dude, where the hell are you? You were supposed to be back like an hour ago!” Bucky exclaims.
Sam huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, funny story. I was actually going to be back an hour ago, but then the blizzard started and I kind of got lost on the way back and ended up in some strangers cabin,” he says.
“You what?” Bucky asks in disbelief. “Sam, you didn’t.”
“It was blizzarding! I could hardly see where the hell I was going, man. I’m fine, Buck. He’s nice, and he’s letting me stay at his cabin until the storm settles outside,” Sam says.
“This could only happen to you. You know that, right?” Bucky asks. If Sam could see Bucky right now, he already knows that Bucky would be shaking his head at Sam for being such an idiot.
“Yeah, I know, you don’t have to tell me that,” Sam mumbles, letting out a sigh. “Hey, it could be worse, yeah? I could have ended up at a serial killer’s cabin.” He looks over when Steve laughs.
“Dude, what is it with you and serial killers?”
Sam scowls at him. “I watch a lot of crime documentaries! Sue me!”
“Is that him? Is he at least cute? Maybe you could hook up with him. This could be your chance!”
“Bucky!” Sam hisses, and he’s so glad Bucky’s not on speaker phone. “Jesus Christ. I’m hanging up.”
“Wait, can you at least send a pic of him? I need to know if he’s good for you,”
“No, I’m not doing that, Bucky. I’m hanging up on you. Bye!” Sam exclaims before hanging up on Bucky. He sets his phone down beside him. Sam sighs. “He’s a psychopath. I swear.”
Steve chuckles. “Hey man. That’s what friends are for. They’re there to embarrass you,”
“Well, I’ve been single for so long. Bucky thinks that gives him a right to embarrass me whenever I’m around a cute boy. It gets really fucking old,” Sam grumbles.
“You think I’m cute?”
“What?” Sam asks, snapping his head up at Steve.
“You called me a cute boy,” Steve says, a grin forming on his face.
Sam groans, and sinks down in the chair. This really could only happen to him.
The blizzard stops when it’s nearing midnight, and Sam wants nothing more than to return to his cabin, but Steve insists that he stay until the morning, because there’s no point in Sam leaving at night when there’s possible danger involved. Sam knows that Steve’s right, so he agrees.
In the morning, Steve makes breakfast.
“You didn’t have to do this,” Sam says when they're at the table, eating. “You’ve already done so much.”
“I can’t let you leave on an empty stomach,” Steve says. “Also… you’re nice to have around, so I may or may not be trying to get you to stay longer. I haven’t had much company since I’ve been at the cabin.”
Sam looks up at Steve, and can’t help laughing. “You could have just said that,”
“Would you have stayed if I asked?” Steve asks, raising his eyebrows.
Sam stares at him for a moment, before nodding. “Well, eventually I have to get back to my cabin, but, yeah. I really do think I would have stayed if you asked. Your company isn’t so bad either,”
Steve grins. “So, will you stay? I mean, just for a little bit longer?”
“You are kind of cute, so… yeah, I guess I will stay,” Sam replies with a grin.
Sam already knows that Bucky is going to tease him about this when he gets back to the cabin.
