Summary
Andy played with an apple idly, holding its thin stem between callused fingers.
“Be careful with that.” Quỳnh warned. “Apples are fortune tellers.”
“Oh?”
“If you go through the alphabet, one letter for each twist, it breaks when you reach the letter that starts your soulmate’s name.”
“Does it now?” Andy probed, a smile playing at the corner of her lips. If there was anything Quỳnh loved it was local legends. Folklores and myths were the heart of a place, she’d once said.
“The schoolchildren told me.” Quỳnh’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, but her eyes were bright and teasing. “Go ahead. Find out yours.”
“A,” Andy said, giving the apple a firm twist, “It’s about time I figured this one out, you know. B.”
The letter Q was a long way off. Lifetimes between each twist. The stem snapped early, though Andy did not make note of which letter predicted her fate. It did not matter, after all. She knew where her heart made a home. Still, she mimed the twist, holding the pieces together until the end.
