Work Text:
soyeon flutters her eyes open once the hands covering them let go of her. she rubs her eyes, waiting for the blur from being closed for a while to dissipate, and is now rather confused than amused at what meets her.
"surprise!!!" an enthusiastic yet deep voice spoke from behind her, whom she recognizes as yuqi. an aggravating chinese girl who bothers soyeon at every chance she gets, and, oh, was she good at her job.
"are you kidding me?"
"why? what? what's the problem?" yuqi replied, pretending to be oblivious as she looked at soyeon, concerned, with the older giving her a half pissed glare in return.
since it's practically winter time, and many people still go out to celebrate their so called holiday spirit—which yuqi thinks is fake, it's already past the holiday season—yuqi decides to take the chance anyway. the idea going out with people you know was not a stranger to yuqi, so she brought soyeon along with her.
actually, hours before they went out, yuqi had done plenty of research. she's a bit embarrassed at the thought; if you saw her search history, it would say "ideas for a date" or "where to go for a first date during winter". as if they were going on a romantic date.. but scratch that. what matters is yuqi got soyeon to agree to take her to an ice skating rink. although she doesn't know that.
it also is probably isn't the best idea. yuqi only later remembered the time soyeon talked to her about a story from her childhood, where soyeon went on a trip with her family somewhere and they also went to a skating rink, where soyeon for the love of god can't skate and even fell in front of one of the people.
soojin, a friend of both girls, witnessed the incident and she had met little soyeon as she was helping her to stand up. since then, after soyeon bothered her parents to keep in contact with soojin and even begged them, they've become close friends.
soyeon never went to any skating rinks again to spare herself from embarrassment, and she's always made that clear. but of course, song fucking yuqi had to ruin it for her.
"out of all places you chose to take me to an ice skating rink?"
"i mean.. why not? right?" yuqi said, scratching her nape but still tried to keep her image of being a cunning and playful yuqi in front of soyeon. she didn't want her to know it was actually a mistake and that she was rather embarrassed. but, she didn't have any other choice anyway. changing plans last minute was not her thing.
"yuqi, we've talked about this before-"
"that you don't like skating rinks, yeah blah blah, but trust me! it's gonna be fun." yuqi tried to reassure soyeon, taking the pair of ice skates given to her from the counter. "don't be so dramatic. you aren't gonna die anyway." soyeon rolled her eyes at the comment.
"i'm not going." the korean said, watching yuqi put on her rollerblades by the bench. a side of her wants to, though. well, the incident happened already years ago and they're already adults, so what's the point in holding onto something from your childhood? and with a partner, she can do better in skating this time.
"okay, how about this," yuqi stood up with a jump. how did she not trip on those shoes? soyeon thinks, but doesn't mind it anyway. "i'll accompany you on the rink so that you won't fall or do anything stupid." she offered, soyeon a bit dubious.
"i don't want to.." however, soyeon's feelings were contradicting to her statement. she suddenly felt warm inside despite the cold atmosphere, the thought of yuqi holding her so delicately to stop her from falling on the ice and being so close against to her makes soyeon blush. call her corny, cringe, or whatever, but soyeon just cant help her big fat crush on yuqi.
"it'll be fun! i promise."
silence stood between them, cutting through the distant chatter and laughs from customers around them.
"you look-" yuqi held in a chuckle. "just, just come over here. it's safe. see?" she added, making a small spin to show soyeon before standing upright on two legs, contrary to soyeon's nervous, shaky steps trying to make her way in the rink.
"fine. come here," yuqi held her arms open and soyeon was quick to jump and hold onto her body. it was nearly disconcerting from how fast she did it, but yuqi didn't mind. it was understandable from someone like her who had tiny bit of trauma.
they remained by the entrance still in the same position, and yuqi notices soyeon has been hugging her for a while now. "you can let go now, you know." she said, looking down and seeing soyeon struggling to stand upright as her legs parted into a near split.
"you're gonna be fine." yuqi pushed her away slightly, holding soyeon by the shoulders. she stumbled again, hands gripping yuqi's waist in panic. "i swear to god, if you make me fall here i'll kill you right away." she threatened, earning a laugh from yuqi.
"we're not gonna get anywhere if you keep on trapping us in this position. you're such a coward, jeon soyeon."
"yeah? fuck you. it's not my fault i'm inexperienced!" soyeon pinched the exposed skin on yuqi's arm, earning a high pitched whine and flinch. she stumbled a little but thanks to yuqi's quick reflexes, she was quick to catch soyeon from falling. "stop moving! you're gonna make us fall!"
"it's your fault for being such an annoying asshole to me."
"i'm sorry, soyeonnie." yuqi tried to act cute by pouting, and soyeon put on a grimace of disgust. in reality, she found that face of the chinese really, really cute, making her want to squeeze the hell out of yuqi's cheeks.
"now, as i said, i'll help you. let's start moving little by little." yuqi started gliding along the ice, moving ever so slightly pulling soyeon with her as she started going backwards. "a-are you sure this is safe?"
the younger felt a death grip on her forearm while she guided the both of them to the center of the rink. "unnie, if it wasn't i would be rolling in pain right now. stop acting like i don't have experience in skating."
still afraid, soyeon looked down onto her feet and saw the calm pace of their movement. little by little, her hesitation dissipated with each glide. maybe this wasn't so bad after all. she straightened her posture as well as looking up to properly face yuqi, and she saw the sparkles in her eyes and the bright smile plastered on her face.
"why are you looking at me like that? weirdo." soyeon snorted, looking away to hide her warming cheeks. "nothing. you look okay now, so you try!" she felt yuqi's arm pull away from her and turned her head back to see yuqi grinning at her.
alarmed, soyeon tried to regain her balance that resulted in her scrambling. she's not close to falling at least, so it means she's doing a good job.
"SONG FUCKING YUQI!" she yelled, earning stares from some people around them that made her silence herself. "ugh. you're not gonna fall! i'm right here." yuqi said, her arms and hands open ready to catch soyeon.
as how helpful and reliable she was trying to seem, yuqi could not help but let out a laugh at how silly and funny soyeon looked like. she giggled at first, earning a murderous glare from the older. "what's so funny?"
"nothing, it's just-" yuqi's giggles evolved into an unrestrained fit of laughter, with soyeon struggling to reach out and smack her. she manages to do so, yet weakly. "owww~" she responded, pretending to be hurt.
"god you're so annoying."
"okay, okay. i'll stop." yuqi put on a straight face and helped soyeon properly get back on her feet, straightening her posture. "relax your body first," she said, holding soyeon by the shoulders once again before letting go slightly. "now, make small glides forward."
she saw how soyeon struggled to go forward, her feet slipping every so slightly on the ice, but she was moving at least! only a little bit though..
while yuqi focused on guiding and teaching soyeon on how to move on the ice, a bastard came in their way and completely crashed into soyeon. the younger rushed to catch her into her arms with success, wrapped securely around soyeon.
"are you okay?" yuqi looked at her, gaze filled with pure concern and maybe a little bit of adoration, but that's probably just soyeon's delusional self acting up once again. she felt safe and fuzzy in yuqi's embrace, feeling up the texture of her warm coat and scarf as well as the warmth of her hold. "i'm okay." soyeon replied, albeit muffled from how buried her face is in yuqi's shoulder.
she looked up, seeing yuqi look at the boy who crashed into soyeon earlier, and oh was yuqi mad. her cold glare made the said boy quickly bow to apologize as he scrambled to exit the rink. "yuqi?" the latter looked back to soyeon, her gaze switched back to soft and caring.
their eyes meet, bodies pressed up against each other closely. too close that soyeon squeals and shoves her away, sliding backwards and holding onto the fence to keep her balance. "HEY! WHAT WAS THAT FOR!"
"nothing," soyeon returned to her snobby facade she always faces yuqi with. "it's boring, let's get out of here." yuqi skates up to her, rolling her eyes as she grabbed soyeon's wrist and led them to the exit.
once they left behind whatever happened at the skating rink, they stopped nearby the night market since it was a bit close to the rink. "what do you think?" yuqi asked, face bright and expecting for a positive answer.
"think about what?"
"you know, about your experience at the skating rink?"
"it was boring." soyeon bluntly commented. it wasn't a lie though, it wasn't that fun to be exact. if she was there without yuqi, of course. everything she does that involves yuqi or yuqi joining in, it makes everything better. even if she got hit by somebody.
yuqi groaned as soyeon smirked, triumphant. "whatever! you're such a letdown." they continued walking along the market, until soyeon started to feel cold again. the way shivering beside yuqi catches her attention.
"are you cold?" she stops in her tracks, facing soyeon.
"what does it look like, genius?" she said with a shaky breath, arms wrapping around herself. she only wore a sweater and pants that she thought would be thick enough to protect herself, and that it wouldn't be too cold outside today. obviously she didn't think it through.
"come here." yuqi opened her thick coat slightly, scooping soyeon up in her arms as relief washed over the older girl upon feeling the familiar warmth wrap around her cold body. she never wanted to ever leave. "feel better?"
"yeah, thanks." soyeon said, tightening her grip around yuqi's body whilst further burying her face into her chest.
they stood in silence. luckily, it wasn't as awkward since they were in a much more private spot, the crowd all gathered up on the stalls. yuqi looked down to check on soyeon and couldn't help but notice the reddening of her cheeks. "are you blushing?" she said with a giggle.
"what? no."
"really now? did i get to manage to get the cold, hardcore and total badass jeon soyeon to blush?" well, she has. many times already without knowing.
"n-no. it's just, it's cold out here." soyeon further hid her face in embarrassment at how her voice cracked at the start of her sentence. she feels vibrations on yuqi's chest from her light chuckling, brushing some bits of snow off soyeon's head.
"mm-mm, whatever you say, soyeon-ah. you're blushing totally because of the cold, and not if i do this--" yuqi cut herself short when she pushed soyeon away from her slightly to leave a chaste peck on her lips, making soyeon blush even more. the older repeatedly smacked yuqi with no mercy, only earning giggles and laughs in response.
"you- SONG YUQI! COME BACK HERE!" she yelled once yuqi started running away.
