Work Text:

The sky is clear, the sun is beaming across the horizon, with some clouds here and there; this is already perfect weather for her girlfriend's birthday today, but most importantly... the right time for Ymir to finally do what she always wanted to do since day one.

Ever since she first laid eyes on her, Ymir had this un-dying affection towards this young, blonde haired girl who insisted her name was Christa Lenz, but Ymir knew better. She could see right through the girl's attempted 'good girl' persona like glass, and the girl slowly but eventually gave in and admitted her true name as she promised, - Historia Reiss. The two of them got really close, close enough to develop feelings for one another; but things changed when Ymir decided to head outside the walls to Marley, leaving Historia with a hole in her heart.

But everything's alright now. After a few years of Marleyan brainwashing, reconciling with friends and a battle between heaven and earth, Ymir finally remembered and reunited with her long lost sweetheart. Ymir didn't mind the fact that Historia was crowned Queen, but It did took a while for her to accept the fact that Historia got pregnant by some loner farmer; once things were settled with their friends, Ymir decided to move back to Paradis helping to raise Historia's new little daughter.

But something was still itching with Ymir though, and it's a really hard one to scratch; that's to finally make a move to propose to her lover. Back in the day she would brag on and on that one day she will marry the cute blonde girl, but it was mostly just to keep the boys away, this time she is certain that she's gonna make it happen. So now on this fine morning, Ymir starts quietly creeping out of the large bed and tip toe out of the room, trying not to wake up Miss Sleeping Beauty in the same bed.

Ymir slowly opens the bedroom right next to theirs, inside there's their little princess all wrapped up in a thick blanket with a tiny doll cuddled up in her chubby little arms; the freckled lady quietly sneaks up to the bed without trying to step on any of the tin toys she got from her 'aunties' and 'uncles' send from Marley. She brushes a stroke of blonde hair out of the little princess' eyelashes.

"Rise and shine, princess." Ymir whispers softly while moving the blanket away from her face. Her rosy cheeks always puts a smile on Ymir's face. "Do you know what today is?"

The little girl opens one of her eyes before slowly starting to get up. "It's Mummy's birt day." She mumbles sleepily, rubbing her eyes with her tiny palms.

"That's correct. Knew you would remember." Ymir smiles proudly. "Hopefully you also remember not to tell her about the surprise present, right?"

The little princess nods before reaching up her hands as a sign to be picked up. "Mm-Hmm." Every morning she insists that Ymir would be the one to lift her out of bed, because she loves that every time she would either carry her on one shoulder or the both of them to make her feel taller. This time though, Ymir only carries her in one arm, so she could carry a very special basket in her other hand.

"Is Mummy still asweep?" The little girl asks, curiously looking around for her.

"Yup. First we'll go downstairs to eat, then we'll go and wake up Mummy. Does that sound good to you?"

"Okay."

After a quick breakfast, the two of them head upstairs toward the bedroom, only to see Miss Sleeping Beauty is already awake and heading out the bedroom door. She jumps a little to see Ymir and her daughter right in front of her. Ymir tries to hold back laughter when gazing at Historia's messy, puffy hair.

"What are you looking at?" Historia questions with tired eyes.

"Oh. Just... bed hair alert." Ymir replies, no matter how many times she sees her with bed hair, it's still always funny to her. Historia rolls her eyes annoyingly.

"Alright, alright. I'm calm. Anyway... Happy birthday, sweetheart." Ymir walks over to give a hug to her girlfriend and the little princess hugs her Mummy back too. Historia gives a small smile from how affectionate Ymir can get whenever it's her birthday, that's definitely something that hasn't changed about her over the years.

"Happy Birt day, Mummy." Her daughter cheerfully said back to her.

"Thank you, both of you." Historia smiles gently back at her precious daughter and her seemly proud girlfriend. "Now do you mind letting me wash and get dress before doing anything else?"

'Wow.' Ymir thought. She still needs to get use to his side of Historia that's not afraid to speak her mind all the time. "Yeah, sure. We can do that. Come on, Frieda."

Ymir heads back downstairs with the toddler in her arms, while Historia shakes her head like 'Even after everything, she still feels like the same old Ymir.' then walks down the hallway to give herself a fresh bath.

The morning passed by in almost a flash, Ymir is surprise from this; she was probably distracted from watching Frieda drawing a cute picture of her with her mother and ‘soon to be second Mom’ and seeing the look on Historia’s face when she gave it to her. Now all is left is her gift; there’s no better time than now. Good thing that Historia doesn’t have any royal duties planned for the day, aside from one meeting with the rest of their friends in the afternoon, cause it be a bummer AND this would make great news to spill to everyone later.

“So, what’s gonna be for lunch Ymir?” Historia asks still clenching onto the adorable drawing.

“Oh, about that.” Ymir replies. “I thought since it’s your birthday, we’d go out on a private picnic. Just the three of us.”

Historia quickly looks up in surprise. “Really? I never thought of you as the one that’s into quiet little picnics.”

“Well…” Ymir pauses to clear her throat. “If yer not interested , we can just have a regular, boring cup of tea with those tiny picky sandwiches then.” The freckled lady shifts her eyes and smirks teasingly.

“Ha ha, nice try.” Historia replies back with a playful tone. “Let’s get a start on it, then. Frieda, would you like to help with the basket?”

Frieda nods her head in excitement. “Yes!”

Ymir grins to herself that it actually worked. Unfortunately now that it’s nearly time, she starts feeling a little noxious. ‘Come on, Ymir.’ She thinks to herself. “You were the one that said you want to marry her, so you owe yourself BIG time.” So she quickly runs out of the door before Historia could notice, and heads straight up to her bedroom side drawer.

There they are, all sitting together on the grassy field right next to an open lake, Historia’s sitting with drink in hand while her daughter runs around picking any pretty flower she can lay her eyes on, bringing back for her mother to see. Meanwhile, Ymir feels like she could have a heart attack any moment; the more she looks at the basket with her surprise gift in it, the more she feels really anxious. But why? She’s been stuck as a titan for sixty years, suffered through Marleyan brainwashing and was forced to kill her old friends; so how the hell can a marriage proposal make her feel all worked up?!

“Ymir? You feeling alright?” Historia asks her sweaty girlfriend. “You look like you’re catching something.”

“Wha… Oh. Yes, I’m fine.” Ymir assures her. God, this was a lot more difficult then the breeze she’d thought it be years ago.

Historia can read Ymir’s face like an open book. She knows when there’s something bothering her, and she doesn’t need the sweat on her face to tell her. Historia puts down her drink and picks up Frieda in her lap after the little princess tried to make herself a flower crown poorly.

“Ymir… this isn’t just an ordinary picnic, is it?”

Ymir literally felt a huge lump in her throat once she heard those words. How the hell did she caught on so quickly? Or hasn’t she? “Well… you… could…”

“Calm down. Take your time before you continue.” Historia replies with that sunny smile of hers.

Fortunately, it’s enough to make Ymir calm, after another breather she reaches over to grab the basket and places it in front of her feet.

“H-Historia.” Ymir stutters. “You’re already aware about how much we’ve been through together… and when we’re not together.” Historia nods her head calmly, not saying anything to allow Ymir to continue. “And seeing you again after four years was happiest I’ve ever been, and to be brought back here with you and your little angel here.” Frieda giggles a little, but tries to stay quiet.

“Go on.” Historia pleases softly. (She seems to know what Ymir is going to say next.)

“But…” Ymir continues. “You know what might be better than a picnic?”

She opens the basket and brings out a small, felted box from under a cloth, nervously raising up in front of Historia and slowly opens the box; revealing a glittery silver ring shining in the sunlight. Historia can feel herself getting all watery eyed with a little hiccup coming from deep in her throat. Ymir notices this and places a hand in Historia’s knee and starts patting it. Then she finally lets out the question.

“Queen Historia Reiss, will you marry me?”

The agony that rested on her shoulders is finally lifted. After all these years she finally let it out, for real this time. Both of them have happy tears dripping down their faces and can barely say anything, while Frieda just sits there confusingly looking back and forth at the two grown weeping women.

“Mummy, why are you crying?” She asks her mother.

“I’m…Mummy is just very happy, darling.” Historia sniffs while wiping her tears away.

She lifts her daughter up in her arm and shifts closer to her now fiancé; giving her the biggest hug she had ever given her. Ymir squeezes her back, but not to tight cause of not trying to harm the toddler. Can’t believe she’s finally going to have the wife to be that she always wanted; so what if this means that she’s probably going to be a second queen, they can discuss that another time. What matters now is each other, and the moment that they’re going to remember for the rest of their lives. Although…

“You know… I would really love to hear ya answer the question.” Ymir said with a grin.

Historia rolls her eyes yet again, this is something she’s gonna have to experience a lot now they’re gonna be wives; but you know… it’s something that she really likes about Ymir, and she wouldn’t dare to change it.

“Yes, I will marry you.”
