Short Hair... Kind of Care

Summary:

Wednesday wasn't exactly planning on using the phone that Xavier had given her. But after seeing that dumb photo that Xavier sent her, she had to take some drastic action.

Work Text:

“What did you do to your hair?”

“I’m sorry?” Xavier had not been expecting a phone call from Wednesday Addams.

He hadn’t even looked at the caller ID before he’d picked up but the last person he would have expected was Wednesday. Xavier barely banked on her replying to his texts. She was sporadic with her messages and what she chose to reply to, but Xavier was willing to take it. He hadn’t even been sure that she would accept the phone when he gave it to her. So, everything from there on in was just a bonus.

“Your. Hair.” Wednesday repeated slowly, her patience wearing thin. “What did you do to it?”

“Uh?” And then it hit Xavier, what Wednesday was talking about. He’d used one of those stupid photo filters when he was bored that showed him what he would look like with short hair. On a whim, he’d sent it to Wednesday but he hadn’t had a response from her in about four hours and had just assumed that she didn’t care. He was about to set her straight when she interrupted.

“How could you so much of an imbecile as to cut off your hair?”

Xavier smirked, maybe he wouldn’t tell her the truth just yet. “Why, Miss Addams, if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you liked my hair the way it was.”

She scoffed down the phone and Xavier didn’t need to see her to know that Wednesday was probably rolling her eyes. “Have you lost braincells whilst school’s been off? I don’t care about your hair, Xavier. I just wanted to know why you did it. Because if it wasn’t for sacrificial purposes then I don’t understand.”

Wednesday tried to play it off but truth be told, her stomach had done something weird when she had seen the photo of Xavier with short hair. It was like someone had settled a tombstone in there without her permission and she couldn’t understand why. Calling him had been a whim. It wasn’t often that Wednesday Addams didn’t think her moves through but when she saw that photo, she just couldn’t stop herself.

The only other person that she had been on a call with was Enid and that was against her will. Strangely though, she found that she had somewhat enjoyed the conversation with her roommate. Most of it was filled with Enid’s chatter but it had filled up the empty space of silence that had been following Wednesday since she had gotten home. Nevermore had made her grown accustomed to having other people around with their constant chatter. It wasn’t like she missed any of them, but she was having to readjust to her life at home again.

Xavier had ended up picking up the phone before Wednesday had fully realised what she’d done. She cursed herself for the lack of impulse control that’d cause the situation. Hearing Xavier’s voice down the phone though had done been a nice feeling. Well, as nice a feeling as Wednesday could muster. She hadn’t immediately been irritated by it and had found herself getting comfortable in the black velvet armchair that looked out of her bedroom window.

“Sorry to disappoint you but no sacrifices are being made.” Xavier deadpanned.

Wednesday could almost understand why both he and Enid had been pestering her for phone calls and videocalls, whatever the latter was. Text was all well and good but there was something about a conversation over the phone that made things feel a little easier. Wednesday felt like she could be a little more like herself and found it a lot easier to be able to read their emotions through their voices than just a bunch of words on the screen. Not that she would ever admit to Enid of Xavier that they had been right, she’d never hear the end of it.

“Then why on earth would you decide that cutting your hair off was a good idea? You look like an idiot.”

“Gee, thanks, Wednesday. You really know how to boost a guy’s ego.”

“Oh, please. I’m not interested in trying to keep your fragile male ego intact. You can find somebody else to do that. I’m just being honest with you. Anyway, you suit longer hair better.”

“So, you like my hair long?”

Wednesday rolled her eyes again, “No. I never said that and if you can’t make a correct inference from my sentences then we are going to struggle to continue talking. I said it suited you. I never said that I liked it.”

“Then why did you call me about it, Wednesday?”

“Call it concern.” She quickly sniped at him.

Xavier just laughed, “Wednesday Addams? Concerned?”

Before Wednesday could reply, Xavier switched the call over to a video call. “Just look at your screen.”

Slightly perplexed, Wednesday drew the phone away from her ear and look at the screen where a grinning Xavier was staring at her, his long hair, falling around his face as he ran his hand through it.

“I didn’t cut it off. It was just a stupid filter I found, I wanted to know what I’d look like if I cut it short and I didn’t like it. Glad to know you didn’t either.”

“I don’t care what you do with your hair, Xavier.” But she did care, just a little because Wednesday had felt a sense of relief when she had seen Xavier’s hair. She hadn’t realised just how much she had associated his long locks with him. Especially with that dumb dopey grin that was on his face.
“Sure thing, Wednesday. You cared so little that you called me and-“

Xavier didn’t get a chance to finish his sentence when Wednesday had cut the call. All he could do was laugh. Maybe Wednesday cared a little more about him than he’d thought.
