Operation: Proposal

Summary:

The day is winding down and Asami is about to put her plan into action. Will it turn out the way she hoped?

Notes:

Sorry this took so long! The holidays and life were a distraction for a while. Plus I needed inspiration in order to finish this story off. Hopefully everyone enjoys! Just 1 more chapter remains!

Work Text:

Just getting off the Space Orbiter, the time was 7:58, which meant Opal and Bolin should be arriving any minute now. I needed to get to a decent area in order to distract Korra.

She was starting to become sluggish. Her feet were moving much slower and I could tell the excitement from the day was beginning to weigh on her. “Maybe we can go grab a spot to catch the firework show! It’s still an hour away but we can just relax until then.”

Perfect! That will be my chance to sneak away.

“I know we need to get a spot early anyway, if we want to make sure to get a good view.”

At this time of day, the sun had long been gone, and I was completely exhausted. The only thing that was keeping me going at this point was knowing that very shortly, when the fireworks were going off above the castle, I would get down on my knee and ask Korra to marry me. A moment I have prepared for so long.

Knowing where the perfect spot was, was easy. It was located directly in front of the castle. I knew this was the spot the moment I decided to propose at Disney.

We sat down on the curb and Korra rested her head on my shoulder. Before she could get too comfortable though, my phone went off. I jumped from my seated position which jolted Korra.

“Woah, everything okay?”

“Yeah, I’m so sorry. This is a call from a partner I had been expecting all day. I’m going to take this and I’ll grab us a snack to eat while we wait for the show. Be right back!”

Korra seemed to still be processing my words when I took off.

I answered my phone a safe distance away. “HEY! Are you guys in the park yet?”

Of course, it was Opal on the phone. “We just got in and are walking down Main Street!”

“Awesome! Look for the big ‘Now Showing’ sign and I’m standing underneath it.”

Before I could even blink, a loud squeal pierced my eardrum and Opal was wrapping her arms around my neck in excitement.

“WE’RE HERE! I CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH THE PROPOSAL!”

“Shhhh!! I don’t need anyone here to know what’s going to happen.”

“They’ll all know soon enough.” Bolin came in for a hug. “Are you nervous yet?”

“I don’t think it has actually hit me yet what’s about to happen. I just hope she says yes.”

“Come on Asami, you know she is going to say yes! You two are perfect for each other and she loves you more than anything.”

“The only thing you are going to need to worry about is how much happy crying she is going to do after.” Bolin had this all-knowing grin, considering he was Korra’s best friend.

Opal made sure to interject. “And how much sex you are going to have tonight.”

“Opal!” Both Bolin and I shouted her name.

“Oh, you know it’s true.” She surely is not subtle. “And here is the ring that you forgot to pack miss perfect.”

I stuck out my tongue and thanked them both again. They didn’t want to be noticed by Korra for obvious reasons, but also wanted to remain close so they could film it for me. Since they were here, might as well take advantage of it.

I grabbed Korra and I an ice cream cone and made my way back to our spot.

The time was 8:40 PM and Korra was sitting on her phone talking to her mom, I think.

“Okay, mom. I got to go. Looks like Asami brought me a sweet treat! Love you too.”

I sat down next to her.

“Did your call go well?”

“My call?” I forgot for a moment that I was on a ‘work call.’ “My call! Yes, it was fine. Just some supply and demand stuff.”

Korra nodded her head in understanding. “My mom and dad say hi.”

“We should go see them soon! It’s been a while since we were there.”

“They would love that! I would too.”

Our ice cream was finished and I was anxiously tapping my foot. I couldn’t help but check my phone every 30 seconds. Time was not moving fast enough. At this point, I just wanted the fireworks to start.

It was 8:58 PM. “I think I’m going to run to the restroom real quick.”

“NO!” I grabbed her hand as she turned. “I mean, you can’t! The show is about to start. You don’t want to miss any part of it. After it’s over, we’ll both sprint there because I have to go too.”

“You seem very antsy Asami. Is everything okay?”

“Everything is perfect! I just don’t want to miss watching the show with you is all.”

“Fine.” She gave me a peck on the cheek and before she could say anything else, the first hiss of a firework erupted from behind the castle.

“It’s starting!”

Okay, now my anxiety was at its peak. Any minute now and I’ll be doing this.

The show was amazing! Every color filled the night sky. Various shapes and sizes. The music. The lights. The dancers. Everything was perfect. Ten minutes passed and I knew I needed to do this very soon.

Right when “When You Wish Upon A Star” came on, I knew it was the final song of the show. This was it. So, I turned to stare at Korra.

“Korra?” She turned to look at me. “Hi. Umm— I love you. I love you so much.” She tried to interject but I stopped her. “Let me finish please.”

I held both her hands in mine. “These last 3 years with you have been the best of my life. Even before we were officially together, you always meant so much to me. I knew that our friendship was more than just that. The years we spent apart were some of the hardest I’ve ever gone through. But through it all, I have loved you. More than I have ever loved anyone! Korra, you are the kindest person. You are brave, strong, dependable, loyal, considerate, and so much more, but I need to wrap this up.”

There were tears welling up in her eyes and I could tell she was beginning to understand what was happening.

“This has not been an easy thing to hide from you Kor.” I pulled out a small velvet box from my pocket. “This adventure with you so far has been incredible.” Opening the box, I went down on one knee. Her hands went straight to her mouth in shock. People around us were now starting to stare and bring out their phones. “Would you do me the honor of continuing this journey together as my wife?”

Tears were now rolling down her face. “Korra, will you marry me?”
