Work Text:
Kakashi looked out the entrance of the cave. Nothing was going well. The mission was fine, but then a storm began and they were forced to seek shelter in the rain. Rin stood next to him, a little smile on her face. He sighed. He was annoyed. At the situation. Not her. Never her. She was faultless before him. Why would he take his anger out on her?
It’s not frustration he feels in relation to her.
No.
It’s curiosity.
Why is she smiling? How could she be smiling? Especially when the weather is so dreary? When those gray clouds hold so many drops of relentless torrents of water that won’t stop pounding the innocent ground? When the thunder won’t stop roaring and disturbing the peace in the air?
At least it wasn’t night. At least the gray wasn’t dark.
But still… Who could be happy at the sight of weather that looks like it's crying?
He had so many questions.
But he’ll start with one.
“Rin…” She turned her head to him, smiling even more when their eyes met.
“Yes, Kakashi?”
“How could you be so happy right now?”
“Hm?” She turned away from him, facing the rain outside. “Well, for one thing, I really like the rain…” Her voice trailed off, like a breeze being sent into a hurricane. He could barely hear the last part, having the sound almost lost in the thunder. But he did.
The rain? How could a person like the rain? He scrunched his eyebrows in thought. In anger. He hated the rain. So many bad things happened when it rained. His father…. It was raining outside when his father… His chest clenched tightly, like a fist around his heart. Like a knife to his organs. Like a sword to his core. He swallowed and shook his head. No… Don’t think about that.
Instead, he turned his head to her. She still had that curve in her lips. That light in her eyes. That glowing happiness on her peach skin.
She was like gold against the silver clouds. Gold like the sun.
He preferred it when it was sunny. How could she like it when it’s raining?
“Why…?” He whispered, his voice barely escaping out of his dry throat.
“Hmmm…” She hummed once more, like music. Like peals of laughing bells chiming in the wind. Her head turned to him once more. “Because…it’s cleansing. It’s calming. It’s powerful. It’s beautiful. It…” Her voice trailed off again.
Kakashi waited, held his breath, and waited for what she was going to say next.
Her eyes gleamed. Golden once more.
“It reminds me of you.”
