Rainbow Cookies

Summary:

“Something bad happened.” Onion mumbled. Custard didn’t get a straight answer.

Work Text:

Custard Cookie the Third met Onion Cookie when he was eight years old, sitting at the edge of Fell City alone. She was playing with Chestnut Cookie and Dozer, and the trio didn’t know he could see them.

“Onion?” He’d asked once when they were alone, his living friends asleep in the tent. “How’d you die?”

Onion didn’t respond for a long time. She just closed her eyes.

“Mama!” Allium Cookie called. “Look! Look what me and Onion drew!”

Shallot hesitated. She turned, forcing a smile as she shoved the paperwork away behind her. “That’s very nice, darling. Is that you and her?”
Allium frowned, immediately pouting.

“No! It’s you and Auntie, see!” She pointed to the scribbled figures on the paper. “That one’s you, and that one’s Auntie Marigold!”

Shallot Cookie smiled, kneeling down to face her daughter. “It’s lovely, Allium. You’ve been watching your sister, right?”

“Yup! She’s a-okay! She’s downstairs in the living room.” Allium grinned. “She’s playing with the markers down, and-“

The glass shattered against the ground before Allium could finish her sentence. The sound echoed throughout the house, and quicker than Allium could register, the door to her mothers study swung open and she could hear the frantic steps of Shallot Cookie running down the stairs.

Her mothers scream made her flinch, but she couldn’t move.

Something bad had happened.

“Something bad happened.” Onion mumbled. Custard didn’t get a straight answer. Chestnut and Dozer didn’t know- she never told them.
