Work Text:
‘Pull Over. Let me Drive’
Sam would call it de ja vu, it’d probably make him feel better if it was, make him feel less like they were going in circles, going through the motions. He glanced over at Dean, one hand on the steering wheel, the other stretched around along the back of the impala’s seat.
His fingertips idly brushed the nape of Sam’s neck, sometimes they’d curl in Sam’s hair, tug playfully on the strands and Dean would glance over at him, a tired smile on his face and say 'gettin’ close to you needing a haircut Rapunzel.’
Sam would roll his eyes and knock their knees together.
‘Jerk,’ he’d say with no malice behind it.
‘Bitch,’ Dean would smirk.
And they’d settle back into that companionable silence until they reach the next truck stop diner. Or the nearest motel where they’d wash off the day, or the monster guts that still clung to them.
Not tonight though.
Tonight they’re driving to…well, actually Sam doesn’t really remember where they’re driving too. He just knows Dean’s not really in any mood to stop in a motel for the night, and Sam doesn’t mind. He saw Dean rub his eyes with the heel of his free hand, the car doesn’t drift, Dean’s too good of a driver for that, but Sam can see the weariness in him.
“Come on,” Sam sat up more in his seat.
His body creaks in protest after having been sitting for too long.
“Pull over, let me drive.”
“I got it Sammy,” Dean waved him off.
“And let you fall asleep at the wheel? No way,” Sam twisted in his seat. “Sides, if we veer off the road, no ones gonna find our bodies til mid October if at all.”
Dean snorted.
“Fine, ya big baby,” Dean signaled even though they’re the only cars on the road and pulls off to the side.
Baby’s engine purrs as they get out of the car and switch seats. It’s a testament to just how tired Dean really is that he doesn’t put up much of a protest. Sam waited until Dean’s buckled before he pulled back onto the road. Sam smiled a little to himself as after a few minutes he can hear Dean snoring softly next to him. Head resting against the window.
Deja vu might not be so bad in hindsight. That is, long as he gets to ride along with Dean.
