i.
sky brilliant blue and crystal clear. the wind heartily blew toward the west. soft, white sand crunched underneath bare feet and the sound of waves crashing into the rocky shore tranquillized the prince’s racing mind. his bright hair tangled in the breeze and his off-white colored satin shirt rippled along.
whatever happened in the royal courtroom stayed in the kingdom. the prince inhaled sharply his lungs stung, but he felt exceptionally good to be standing where the ocean slightly touched his feet. he stood there admiring the deep blue ocean he had always loved. the kingdom was probably falling into a panic about the missing prince right then, but not wanting to go back where he was to be prim and proper so soon, he laid his body down on the cushion of sand and shut his eyes. it did not take long for the prince to fall into a deep slumber.
hours had passed when the boy opened his eyes to a pair of beautiful ocean irises staring back at him. startled, both parties jolted away from each other, but before he could properly make out what he had been looking at, that something had swiftly made its way under the deep blue sea with a splash. one thing for sure was that it reminded him of the ocean, blue and clear.
ii.
that day, a tinge of soft blue stained the moon. the ocean and sand glistened under the silver moonlight. the branches danced in the gentle breeze, the rustling sound it made accompanied the quiet night. the maroon-haired prince’s steps quickened when he got closer to the ocean, his feet padding against the delicate sand. the comforting sound of waves colliding eventually reached his ears. despite the composed exterior he had, one could see the rush of nervousness and excitement he was feeling all at the same time.
he let his feet soak in the cold water as soon as he arrived. the ocean was and the gulls quietly chirped from the distance. he gazed at the full moon reflected on the water and thought to himself how beautiful the scene in front of him was, like it was something out of a fairytale. it also reminded him about a certain someone.
with a splash, something leaped out of the water and crashed into the prince. the act itself snapped the prince out of his trance and the both of them tumbled down the sand. delicate limbs made their way around the prince in a tight embrace.
“rin!” rin chuckled wholeheartedly in response after hearing the voice he had yearned for rang in his ears. it was the loveliest voice ever. “i missed you so much.”
“i missed you too, haru.” the boy mumbled into haru’s raven locks, his arms tightening around the other’s slim figure. “so so much.”
“you came back.” the raven fought back a sob.
“i told you i would come find you on the next blue moon. thank you for waiting, my love.”
the raven pulled away slightly as to give himself a better view of the prince he had long for and rin stared at his lover looking ethereal as ever under the moon. his soft locks tousled in the twilight breeze, his pink lips, milky white skin, azure scales on his hip down to his dazzling tail, and his beautiful ocean eyes that he had always loved. the prince reached out to gently go over his soft features as he leaned against his warm touch. both locked eyes for a split second before haru leaned down to capture rin’s lips in his.
the kiss was soft and sweet. both parties melted into the kiss almost instantly as rin flipped them both around, one of his palms resting against the sand beside haru’s head, and the other fervently cradling his cool face. the raven responded to the soft pressure when rin pressed a little harder, one of his hands making its way to hold the prince’s arm.
the older slowly pulled away for air, and his heart skipped a beat when he took in the sight of his lover laying underneath him, his mouth red and wet from the kiss. despite the dark, rin could make out the tinge of blush creeping up his cheeks. the prince then lowered himself to press a kiss on the corner of haru’s lips before leaning down to lean their foreheads against each other’s.
“do you still remember how to walk?” the maroon haired whispered.
“it’s been a while, my prince.” haru responded, his voice equally as weak as rin’s.
“do you want to give it a go?”
iii.
once haru had shifted into his human form, rin helped him up to his feet. it had been a while since haru walked on his feet. thus, his legs felt like jelly and stung a bit at first. but rin reassured him that everything will be alright and that he would be able to walk like how he used to again, and he just needed time to readjust. the prince had offered the mermaid his feet as a guide, asking the latter to step on both his feet as haru’s hands rested on his shoulders whilst his securely around his waist.
slowly, the couple swayed left and right, their bodies flushed against each other. taking little steps for haru to get used to his feet once again. the prince’s button-up looked decently large on haru’s slim figure as it rippled in the wind. rin was now wearing a white shirt he had worn underneath his button-up earlier.
“haru.” rin said, his voice low as he brushed away the slightly wet hair that was sticking to the mermaid’s forehead.
“hm?” the shorter looked up, his beautiful ocean eyes meeting rin’s maroon ones. the former’s blue orbs twinkled under the moon, his long lashes gently padded against his damp cheeks as he blinked. rin was falling in love all over again.
“go back with me, haru.”
“i can’t, my prince, i-“
“the war is over. you’ll be safe there now. i promise….please?” the prince’s voice broke at the last word. years went by without both of them seeing each other and with each and every passing day, rin’s patience had grown thinner and thinner. him wanting the war to just be over already so he could reunite with his love.
the prince promised that the war would be resolved by the next blue moon, and had asked the mermaid to meet him at the location where they had first met years prior. it was not easy to let go, especially when there was no guarantee of their future. both parties were reluctant to leave each other’s sides, but they knew it had to be done.
“love…?” rin whispered when haru stayed silent a bit too long. “you don’t have to come with me. i won’t force you-“
“i’ll come. i’ll go with you. it’s what we wanted, right?”
hearing the words coming out of haru’s mouth, rin engulfed him in a tight embrace as tears started swelling in his eyes and eventually rolled down his cheeks. he was happy, ecstatic. after all those years worrying about his and haru’s future with a war threatening the country, he was finally able to be with the love of his life.
the prince held him tighter than ever, burying his face in the mermaid’s shoulder when he felt the latter hug him back in response with his arms around his torso.
“i love you, haru. i love you.” haru shivered slightly as rin pressed wet kisses on his neck. “so much.”
“me too. i love you.”
that day, was a start of a new beginning for the prince and mermaid.
