Metanoia

Summary:

Previously "Saisei" (03/07/25)

Izuku's life has been on a downward spiral ever since he was four years old. He was diagnosed quirkless, crippled by modern standards. Useless at everything he tried.

He managed to deal with that, though, for eight years.
Until his mother dies unexpectedly.

For days, he floats in unimaginable grief, with no idea what to do with himself.

Until–
“You should just cut Auntie Inko and the rest of us a break and take a swan dive off the roof of the building!”

He takes the advice.

And surprisingly, he wakes in a cold place smelling of antiseptic.

Chapter Text

Izuku startles awake to a harsh knocking on his door.

“Izuku! Wake up and get ready for school.” His foster mother calls out. He's not sure she could be called a mother.

She's not caring like his mother was. Izuku had always woken up to his mother's sweet voice and the smell of breakfast on the stove.

Izuku takes a sharp intake as he standes over the bed he had just made. Don't think about her, he reminds himself. Now, he just woke up to his harsh fosters and an empty feeling.

It had been one week since the incident, one week since his mother left him, and one week since he was put in this home.

Izuku had that week off of school, and he's not excited to return now. He doesn't know if Katsuki had been informed about what happened, but it's not like it'd change anything.

Katsuki had always been mean, ever since they were young. He would push Izuku down, call him Deku, useless. And it only got worse when it was found out Izuku was quirkless.

He picks up his bag and leaves out the door. He doesn't bother checking if they made him breakfast, he knows they didn’t. He’ll just eat lunch at school.

The walk there is relatively peaceful, considering he isn't walking near Katsuki. It takes him longer to get to school, but it's a beautiful route. Izuku takes a moment to watch a white butterfly resting her wings in a patch of red flowers before continuing his walk.

As he reaches the school gates, he hears a familiar voice call out, “Hey, Deku!”

Izuku cowers as he turns to see Katsuki walking towards him with his hands in his pockets and his usual mean look. “Yes, Kacch-”

“Shut up, Deku!” he yells in his face, “Where were you last week, huh?! You think you can just dip out of school for a week?” So, he wasn’t told.

“No!” Izuku has to move out of the way of an explosion.

“So what’s your excuse then?”

“I just- I've just been dealing with a lot after-” Izuku barely gets out before he interrupts again.

“Ugh, never mind, I don't care!” He kicks Izukus bag and strolls past, continuing toward the school. After a minute or so, Izuku picks himself up and also continues toward school.

The day drags on and Izuku can't help but think about the past week. How his mother was abruptly taken from him, how he was moved from place to place, and how he was finally homed with his foster parents.

They don't seem to like him very much. Then again, who did? Who would? He certainly doesn't.

He manages to get to lunch, and hides in the same spot he normally does. It doesn't last long. After only a few bites, Izuku hears the dreadful sound of Katsuki calling his name.

The rest of his lunchtime is spent running around and hiding from his bullies. By the time Izuku is able to get away from them, the bell is ringing, and he has to get back to class. At least they didn't catch me this time.

As Izuku walks to class, Katsuki finds him again. “Think you can just run me around school and get away with it huh, Deku!”

Shit! He murmurs out half sentences before being interrupted by Katsuki throwing an explosion in his face. “Shut up you stupid Deku!” he practically yells.

Katsuki throws him on the ground and beats him for nearly the whole transition period. As Katsuki keeps kicking Izuku in the ribs, he hears the crk crk crk crk of what worryingly sounds like bones.

After a few minutes of this, Izuku faintly hears “Shit, I'm gonna be late... Fucking Deku” and the boy runs away.

When he finally trudges his way to class, he sees on the clock that it's almost five minutes into class. At about this time, the teacher would start class, so he probably won't get in-

“Midoryia, you’re late.” the teacher calls out, and heads turn towards the door, to Izuku, “Detention after school. Unless that's not a good time?”

“No sir, that'll be fine.” Izuku stammers out. As he races to his seat, someone tries to trip him and fails. He hears whispers all around him about how stupid and worthless he is.

Izuku wishes he didn’t have to be here. He wishes he didn’t take just a week off of school. He wishes he could take life off of school. He wishes he didn’t have to deal with all these people looking down on him, or pitying him, or berating him.

He wishes he didn’t exist.

Class passes by quickly.

Izuku was in a fog for most of it, he did that thing he researched a bit called, disassociating? Gotta look more into that later. He's interrupted from packing his bag by an explosion right next to his face. Katsuki hasn't left yet.

“Hey Deku,” he jeers, “Auntie Inko had to pick up more shifts to support your useless ass huh?” When his mother was alive, she often had work overtime. But that's not why the teacher asked, not this time. Not ever again.

But Katsuki doesn't know that.

Izuku tears up at the mention of his mother but tries his best to hide it. Apparently not hard enough. “Crying already? I think that's a record!” Katsuki laughs.

Izuku gets up and wipes the tears from his eyes. “How would you ever have a chance as a Hero if you cry that easily?” Katsuki puts his hand on Izuku’s shoulder and it starts smoldering.

“You should just cut Auntie Inko and the rest of us a break and take a swan dive off the roof of the building!”

Katsuki walks out of the classroom, bored after Izuku doesn't respond.

The teacher had left at some point before to grab some papers.

That’s what Izuku wants. To be dead.

Izuku walks down the vacant halls with a sick feeling. But he wants this. He wants the release. He doesn’t want to be here, and no one would care if he left.

It’s difficult to climb up the stairs with his injuries. He thinks back to being kicked in the ribs today. That must've been the sound of his ribs fracturing.

But it’s not going to matter soon if his ribs are broken or not.

Izuku reaches the door to the roof and takes a deep breath. He pushes the door open and the sun hits his face.

What a beautiful day. He walks to the edge of the roof and sits there. A butterfly flies over and sits on his knee. He could swear it was looking at him.

Izuku sits there for a few more minutes just taking in the pleasant day before the butterfly goes away.

Well, I guess it's time. He gets up and takes his shoes and bag off, setting them neatly at the roof's edge.

He looks down to make sure no one will see him jump. Katsuki walks out the front door of the school and stopps to look at his phone.

He's always been so mean to me,

I'm going to pay him back.

“I'll see you soon, mom,” Izuku leans forward with his arms spread out and starts falling.

The wind hitting him is cold and harsh, yet was refreshing. He feels as if he were flying, and all his troubles fade away. He is embraced by the wind as it invades his lungs. It's the most comfort he's had in a while. As he falls, no, flies, he remembers the small butterfly he kept seeing all day.

Maybe I'll be a butterfly in the next life.

He hits the ground. Blood seeps out of his body around him as his senses fade. Distantly he hears someone call out for him.

Katsuki walks out the front door of his school as his phone pings. His mother is asking what he wants for dinner.

Then, behind him, Katsuki hears a thud. He turns to see what it was and is horrified to see it was Deku, bleeding from his head.

“Oh my god, D- IZUKU!” Katsuki rushes to Isuku's side and falls to the ground. “Did he... did he jump?” he whispers to himself.

A white butterfly lands on Izuku's head, mixing with the blood. Katsuki calls emergency services and explains what happened to the operator.

They say police and paramedics would arrive in a few minutes, and to stay where he was. So he stays there, sitting by his childhood best friend's dead body for far too long.

Why did he say such a stupid thing… He should have noticed Izuku wasn't doing well. In hindsight, it was obvious. I can't believe he actually did it.

As the paramedics arrived and he was taken away for questioning, Katsuki started zoning out and the world blurred. He couldn't believe he had done this.

Izuku wakes with a gasp and starts coughing, attempting to get as much air in his body as possible.
