I had a visceral reaction the first time I realized that the game has emigration set to illegal by default. Like, these little fictional people are prisoners here? They can't fucking leave? Why??

Title is a reference to Hotel California.

It had been a choice of nine: Vanaar, Sandy Gulch, Azara Falls, Hyla's Crescent, Tenari Glacier, Arido Mesa, Kelori Strand, the Valley of Death, and Eden Crater.

Delores had wanted Vanaar, but that list had been competitive. Hyla's had been her second pick, but she hadn't gotten that, either. She'd ended up in Arido, because they were the least discerning when it came to immigrants...

And then the colony had started to collapse.

She'd been smart. Submitted the transfer paperwork early before the rush. Waited to hear back.

Her rejection notice scares her.

"Residence: AM," it reads. "Status: Emigration Disallowed."
