Home or Family?

Summary:

Day 26 of Febwhump - Forced to Choose

Dazai made a split second decision, and it ended up costing him someone he cares about.

Work Text:

They were up against a foe who had forced Chuuya to use corruption. The enemy was defeated, but Chuuya was completely drained after that. Falling limply to the ground after being touched by Dazai.

“Rest Chuuya, I’ll handle the rest,” Dazai gently brushed his hair off his face.

“You better…” Chuuya rasped, passing out.

Picking him up, Dazai moved Chuuya out of the way of the battle. Planning to sit there with him until things calmed down. However, the Agency was also fighting several foes that they couldn’t handle.

It would be dangerous to leave Chuuya alone on a battlefield, but Dazai also knew that his friends needed his help. He knew he had little time to decide, as the Agency were screaming over the coms about the enemies overwhelming them. Glancing outside, he saw no one was in the area, so, Dazai decided to leave Chuuya’s side.

Believing it would be safe to leave him there, and even if it wasn’t Dazai hoped Chuuya could handle himself. The Agency was his family now, and he refused to let something happen to them while he watched over someone who had come to represent being home. He hated having to choose which to help, but he just hoped he was making the right decision.

Going to the battlefield the Agency was on, Dazai snuck to the rooftop of a building, and start firing at the enemy. He hit none of their vital spots, but it was enough to catch them off guard, so a member of the Agency could take the enemy out. It ended up being an effective plan, as the enemies realized there was a sniper and became far too preoccupied with that to pay attention to the Agency.

The fight ended soon after, and Dazai came down to congratulate his friends. Before he realized, he had to go back for Chuuya and make sure he was okay.

“Hey, I left Chuuya by himself, and he was injured, so I’m going to go check on him,” Dazai made sure to hide his worry.

“I’ll come with you, just so he can be fixed up right away,” Yosano decided, not even bothering to ask if that was okay.

Nodding to her, the two left their colleagues behind and went to where Chuuya was left. Walking across the broken streets, they arrived to the building where Dazai had hidden him. Entering and heading to the location where Chuuya should have been passed out on the floor.

Chuuya wasn’t there, and the floor was coated in blood.

The sight gave a very vivid image to Yosano and Dazai for what had happened. It was beyond likely that Chuuya had been taken out, and the body had been taken as evidence that he was dead or perhaps to be experimented on. Without answers to what had happened to him, Dazai wasn’t going to be able to relax. Being with Chuuya was the only time he felt at home, and even with the Agency as his family, it would never feel right without him.

“I left him here, which means he’s been taken. We need to start searching for him now,” Dazai went to run off, and start searching, when a hand grabbed his wrist.

“Dazai, he’s probably already dead, and we can’t afford to go out searching for a body. So, just sit down and relax for a bit, and then we can talk to the others about this,” Yosano tried to make him see reason.

He pulled his wrist free, “I can’t relax until I find him. You expecting me to relax without him is insane.”

She didn’t know the full extent of their relationship, but she understood that Chuuya was important to Dazai. Important enough for him to run off, and refuse a chance to relax, just to find the other. Yosano decided she’d tell everyone else, while letting Dazai search for a bit.

Running around for over an hour got Dazai nowhere. He couldn’t find any signs of Chuuya, and he was regretting not bringing him with when going to help the Agency. Even though he was aware that he would have been too slow if he had to carry Chuuya.

Being forced to choose between the people he cared about felt cruel, and Dazai wanted to make things right again. To bring Chuuya home, and take care of him until his injuries healed, and he was ready to go back to work. Then they would only see each other in the mornings and evenings again, but they’d be okay.

However, after several hours, Dazai was exhausted, and Chuuya was still gone. He wanted to collapse, but he refused to let his home be taken from him. Sure, he still had a place to live, but it wasn’t a home without the person he cared about the most.

Falling to the ground, Dazai grit his teeth and cursed the world for taking away another person he cared about. Despite being aware that he would eventually lose everyone he loved, he didn’t think it’d be so soon after he last time. Only a few years had passed, which wasn’t enough time to him.

It took a while before someone showed up, having wondered when Dazai was coming back. He was curled up against a building, and staring at the sky with blank eyes. Nothing mattered to him in that moment.

“Dazai, it’s time to go,” Kunikida didn’t shout, or sound as annoyed as he usually did.

“I couldn’t find him, even though I searched for hours,” Dazai responded, still not turning to look at his coworker.

A frustrated sigh could be heard, “We figured that when you hadn’t come back. But it’s late, and I’m not leaving you outside overnight.”

He didn’t want to move, or get up, “I need Chuuya to sleep, so, taking me back with you is pointless. I won’t sleep, and I’ll probably just go back out to keep looking.”

“At least you won’t be out here looking miserable,” Kunikida picked him up, and threw him over his shoulder.

Dazai didn’t speak as he was carried back to the dorms, just staring at the ground. He didn’t have it in him to do anything except think about what must have happened to Chuuya. It was going to be the only thing on his mind until he had answers.
