    Without a word he unravels from Shang Qinghua and makes to stand up out of the nest. Dislodging the blankets and furs sends up a wave of sweet scent, previously confined. Alarm has Liu Qingge scrambling, and he falls out of the nest onto the cold hard floor.

    “Liu-shidi!” Shang Qinghua leans over the side of the bed to peer down at him.

    Liu Qingge isn’t just warm. He’s feverish. He can feel the heat of his skin now that it is pressed against the icy chill of the room. He feels too big for his body, especially with the way Shang Qinghua is looking at him in wonder.
