Summary
Things in Rockford are slow, but Carson Shaw is fast. Carson Shaw is fast and fervent and the first thing that Greta thinks about each morning, and she hasn’t felt this way in years. She hasn’t let herself.
But Carson is here and real and present, and she isn’t going anywhere. Greta isn’t used to a paradise that doesn’t taste like running, but she finds it in Carson. Carson tastes like a walk-off homer after a twelve-inning game. She tastes like that moment in the dugout when you watch it soar towards centerfield. She tastes like victory, the split second where the world is yours. Where the sky is yours. Where everything is yours. And nothing has ever been Greta’s, not like this.
Carson tastes like a moment frozen. She makes an honest woman out of Greta in these stolen seconds, kisses her like she’s never told a lie – and Greta is pretty sure Carson hasn’t. She kisses her until Greta is spilling truth, telling her about all of the lives she’s lived, about the friends she’s had that no longer exist, all of the ghosts.
(Or, a study of Greta and time.)
