Chapter Text

Derek walked through the house, flicking off lights as he went. He checked the doors and windows to make sure everything was locked up tight before he went off down the hall. He stopped and poked his head into Eli’s room. He heard the soft breaths of his 5 year old son sleeping soundly in his bed. A soft smile spread across his face at the sight before he closed the door soundlessly. He stood there in the dark hallway a second before remembering the new parts that came in today.

Derek walked into the garage and flicked on the lights. He made his way over to the work bench, where he grabbed the new spark plugs, a clean rag and his tool box before heading over to the jeep.An irritated sigh escaped his lips as he wrestled open the hood and stared down at the engine. “I’d be better off sending you to the scrap yard.” Derek muttered out loud to no one before he got to work. After 5 years of slowly replacing all the duct tape with actual new parts, Derek still felt like he was far from done repairing this thing.

An hour later, he was wiping his hands clean of dirt and grease, slamming the hood close and putting his tools away. He would wait till morning before testing it out, but he knew it was going to start. It always started. And then he’d park it back in its spot outside under the tarp. Derek leaned against his work bench, staring at the jeep. Working on cars was supposed to be relaxing for Derek, and yet just looking at the Jeep was enough to cause irritation. Enough so that he finally took out his phone and shot off a string of texts to a number he hasn't heard from in a long time.

Derek: “Just replaced the spark plugs in Rosco.”

Derek: “If zombies were real, this thing would definitely qualify with how many times it has come back from the dead.”

Derek: “And no, zombies are still not real."

Derek: "Neither is Bigfoot.”

He slid his phone back into his pocket, knowing no response would come. It was 1am in Beacon hills which meant it was 4am in DC and even if he was awake, he had better things to do then to exchange dumb texts about a old Jeep that he left behind. Plus it had been 5 years since they had been in contact. One of them lived on the opposite side of the country and had a job and a girlfriend to keep them busy. The other had a son.

Derek gave that old Jeep one last look before he turned and walked away.
