Chapter 1: Where light goes, hope follows

Chapter Text

"We won't make it in time."

"Everything is collapsing."

"You two, get in."

"No, oniisan. We're not leaving you behind."

"Shut up and get in!"

Takeru woke up with a start. It was the same dream again. He hadn't ever expected to actually get over it, but he had been seeing it less recently. Now, however, the nightmares were back with vengeance. Though, Takeru was pretty sure what had caused it. He had been nervous about this day. It was his first day in a new school in Odaiba, and it meant meeting her again.

Hikari Yagami.

Takeru had missed Hikari. She was the only person in the world, who knew and understood his situation. Loosing friends that had meant so much, who had become so close. Loosing an older brother.

Takeru said goodbyes to his mother, who reminded him to call his father after school. Takeru's parents had taken lost of Yamato hard, but at least they still had Takeru. Many of the other digidestined families had lost their only child. Both Hiroaki and Natsuko had practically clinged on Takeru for the first year after he had come back. Takeru had been worried about his dad for a while, but he had managed to cope by sinking even more into his work. Takeru mother on the other hand had cried and cursed every moment she had spent apart from Yamato after their divorce.

Takeru stepped on to the building's elevator, only to see two other kids already on it, apparently also going to the same school. The girl with glasses introduced herself as Miyako Inoue, a sixth grader. The boy was younger than Takeru, a third-grader named Iori Hida.

"So, you're a fifth grader at our school?" Miyako asked. "You know anyone around here?"

"Kind of." Takeru answered. "Last time I was at Odaiba was actually three years ago. During those monster attacks."

"Oh, that's interesting." Miyako said.

"Miyako, don't start." Iori said.

"What? I only think it's weird we never got any real explanation. And I just think she might know something."

"Umh, what are you talking about?" Takeru asked.

"Well, do you remember three years ago, after the fog and monster attacks, there was that weird mirage of an unknown continent in the sky?" Miyako said.

"Yeah, I remember." Takeru said carefully.

"At that time, a handful of kids from Odaiba went missing. Like, they were right at the epicenter of everything and there were these claims that someone saw them being sucked up to the sky. But they vanished, never seen again."

"Oh," Takeru said. "what happened to them?"

"That's just it. No one knows. But there is this girl, Yagami, at our school. Her brother was one of the vanished kids."

"And Miyako is just itching to interrogate her about the whole thing." Iori said.

"Well, she had never even talked about it to anyone. And she might be the only to know what really went down."

Not the only one, Takeru though, as they came close to school.

                                                                  ******************************************************************************

Takeru didn't even make it inside his new school, before the first shock of the day came. There were kids about his age playing football on the school yard when he arrived, and for a brief moment he was sure he saw Taichi among them. Takeru thought being back in Odaiba was playing tricks on his imagination, but no. He was actually looking at a real boy. Not Taichi though. This guy was too young to be Taichi, he also had shorter hair that was more reddish-brown than Taichi's had been. But the goggles he had on his forehead and the way he held himself. Add the football and Takeru could've sworne he was looking at Taichi's long-lost brother. Takeru heard other kids call the boy Daisuke. Uncanny.

Takeru stood outside a classroom, waiting for the teacher to call him in. He put on his best friendly smile as he stood in front of the class and introduced himself. Takeru's presence seemed to cause quite disturb among the girls in the class. A blonde and blue-eyed Japanese boy with kind smile and relaxed attitude. The teacher moved him to sit down on a free desk, coincidently next to Hikari. She seemed happy to see him.

"I have something to show you later." Hikari whispered.

After their last lesson for the day, Hikari led Takeru to the school computer lab.

"I noticed this when a 6th grader named Inoue asked my help on the other day." Hikari explained as she light up one of the monitors.

"Miyako-san? I know her. She lives in the same building as me."

Takeru and Hikari didn't know it, but there was someone keeping an eye on them behind a corner. Daisuke had not been pleased at all by the unexpected events of the day. The new guy, Takeru, had not only been seated next to Hiakri on every lesson, but they had somehow immediately hit it off. They were talking constantly, and the blond boy even made Hikari laugh a couple of times. Then they had sneaked off together after school. Daisuke had tried to get closer with Hikari for a while, but she had never showed him anywhere near the same affection as the new guy who had strolled in. It was infuriating.

Daisuke peaked over the corner to see the two teens looking at one of the monitors. What the heck were they even doing here anyway?

"Digigate? An actual gate, seriously?" Takeru exclaimed while looking at the screen.

"The gate appeared on this monitor only, but it's not open." Hikari explained.

"But still, after three years, we could finally get back." Takeru kept staring at the screen. "There has to be a way for us to open it."

"That's I wanted to show it to you the first thing." Hikari said. "Digivices have been the key for us before in accessing the Digiworld. I couldn't open the gate alone, but with both of us here now. . ."

"Worth of a shot. We have the only digivices on this world, as far as we know." Takeru agreed.

Both Hikari and Takeru raised their digivices towards the closed gate on the computer screen.

"Help us. Allow us to go back to Digital world."

"Digidestined need to be united again."

And after only a second of waiting, both their digivices came to life and started to glow. Gate on the screen came life as well. The color changed as it opened.

"Takeru, it worked!"

"This it then. Let's not waste one more second."

Both of them leaned towards the monitor. Gate started to shine blue light on them as they felt their feet lifting off the ground. They were on their back to the Digiworld.

Just a second later, they were both gone. Confused and shocked, Daisuke Motomiya stood on the doorway. He had just witnessed too of his classmates being sucked into a computer. He did not know what to think or even believe, despite seeing it all himself.
