That lie won’t ever matter in the end because no one will ever want, or need, to see his student id, what really matters right now is that Kokichi is starving and there’s a can of Lima beans in the mess hall kitchen with his name on it, in a metaphorical sense of course, people knowing what he eats is creepy, and putting his name on things is a lesser man’s means of staking claim on them anyway.
Kokichi is better and worse than the lesser man, and that’s only a half lie.

“Okay, then, uh,” Daimon fiddles with a loose thread on the cuff of his sleeve. “Well, it’s… I dunno how to put it. I asked Shingetsu-kun the question earlier but I dunno. It sounded like his answer came outta some book he read or somethin.” Daimon puffs out his cheeks, and Momota tries to figure out whether he should give some reassurance here, or wait for Daimon to keep talking. It’s such a hard line to walk, and Momota really isn’t that great with kids, as much as he likes them. Before he can make up his mind, Daimon speaks up again. “Do things ever… get better?”
That is one hell of a question. “Well,” Momota leans himself back against the table, careful not to disturb the phonograph, drumming his fingers against the mahogany. “What do you mean? It’s a good question,” he adds, glancing at Daimon, “and I’m not upset, but in order to answer I think you gotta be more specific about what kind of things you want to get better.”
“Like… y’know, things,” Daimon says, which is not helpful.
