Then Tell Me My Name

Summary:

Alternate title: Caught By a Hurting Hawk

Mirko saw the broadcast, she saw Hawks betray everyone, and she came to kick his ass. So why is he acting like she’s the one hurting him? And why did he leave her alone with a box of files and an old computer? And why doesn’t she know his name?

Work Text:

Mirko had been awake for 32 hours by the time she finally found Hawks. Hawks the bastard that betrayed the Commission, all of Japan, his friends, her.

"You bastard!" She jumped down from the roof, aiming to land on him from where he was standing.

Within a second he was turned around getting himself out of the way and ready to fight.

"Mirko, good to see you, I'm surprised it took you this long to find me," he held two long sharpened feathers in his hands, his signature smirk on his face.

"Don't talk like we're friends," she growled, attempting another kick.

"You act like I did this on some mere whim,"

"So you planned to betray everyone, and kill the president! Join Lady Demented and toss him off the roof!"

"She's not the demented one, and if you'd listen to me I could prove it," he told her, using his feather to force her away, trying to avoid hurting her.

"Like Hell!" She shouted back lunging again.

"Seems I'll just have to ask again once you've calmed down," and with that, he knocked her out.

Coming through Mirko found herself in a simple grey room, with only a bed, and a desk with a monitor and computer turned off. A large black two-way mirror covered one wall. She recognized it as a cell in Tartarus.

"Rumi," Hawks greeted her, entering the room with a cart, on it was a plate of food and a large collection of files.

"So you imprisoned me." She growled.

"So you attacked me. Rumi, you didn't exactly give me much of a choice. You're not officially a prisoner, not yet, whether or not that changes is up to you. And I want you to have the full picture before you make that call, these are the files the commission had on Kaina and I, including video and audio recordings, you can ask the guard for me if you have any questions,"

"How dare you call me that after betraying everyone!"

"How long have we known each other?"

"The Hell that's got to do with anything?"

"Just answer,"

"Just over four years asshole,"

"Then tell me my name?"

"The Hell? It's…" she drew a blank, why was she drawing a blank, they had been friends for three and a half years, and best friends for two.

"My name is in the files, I've never been allowed to be honest up until now, so I sincerely hope I can be honest with you now," and with that, he left the cell.

It had taken her over an hour to finally open the first file.

Name: Kaina Tsutsumi

Age: 7

Birthday: 10 October, 2***

Quirk: Rifle

So this was Lady Nagant's file, it was odd that they had a file on her so young, but that didn't necessarily mean anything.

Orphaned after parents died as collateral in a villain fight. Current guardian; an elderly old woman named Mira Tsutsumi, the girl’s grandmother on her father's side.

Current plan: it will be easy to claim inadequate guardianship and take her into our program, and start training her.

What? What program? Why would they be making a claim against her grandmother to get her into it?

Seeing a USB stick she plugged it into the computer, and opened up a file called Project Nagant, finding numerous audio recordings with dates labeled as happening three decades ago.

"Report 32

Kaina age 8

The asset has shown improvements in aim and is learning not to ask questions after we threatened to stop letting her talk to her grandmother. Her physical training will be increased to weights of 10 pounds and a treadmill speed of 15 km/h for an hour each day. Failure to meet expectations will result in loss of downtime."

She recognized that voice as the commission president during Lady Nagant's hero career.

Going through the files both digital and physical. Finding instance after instance of abuse, and conditioning Mirko was in shock looking at the blacked-out files of Lady Nagant's career. The commission had her killing off heroes they didn't like. Long lists of cover-ups and clean-up crews.

Then the old president said it was time to start training a replacement. Lady Nagant was starting to become doubtful about the validity of her missions.

The final file was two audio recordings, one of the then-president giving Nagant another mission to kill two heroes while they were on a mission. When she questioned him, he threatened her, and she shot him.

The second recording was of the former president deciding to cover up her arrest and bury any questions by saying she had been arrested for killing a fellow hero. And that they'd announce that her predecessor was retiring a week after. They would have to keep a closer watch on her replacement and prepare the next asset earlier.

The project was titled Hawks.

Hawks was Lady Nagant's replacement….

The first video showed a video from a traffic camera, showing small fluffy red feathers pulling people out of the way of a car chase.

An attached document listed his name as Takami Keigo. The son of the Takami Thief and a woman named Tomie Takami. And that they were able to pay off his mother into letting them take the child.

It listed his parents' quirks as a Remote Floating Eyes, with feathers as hair, and a Feathered Arm quirk.

It noted that he would be the first of his blood capable of true flight as he had proper wings and a great deal of control over them.

There were graphic videos and descriptions of training him to endure torture. How they punished any undesirable traits such as chirping, blinking using a set of clear eyelids, eating raw meat…

Traits that Rumi had no idea about. She learned that even his apartment was controlled and designed by them, purposely making it as uncomfortable as possible as a way of keeping him out and working.

How he'd been sent to infiltrate the League. With approved reasonings as to why. Seriously wanting heroes to have more free time than they know what to do with, by joining a criminal organization?!

There was so much, lows on par with the crimes of the Kamino Bastard.

"I see you looked through the files," Hawks, no Keigo, commented entering the room.

"So they really bought you?..."

"Yeah, they took advantage of my mother's addiction and manipulated us both. I won't pretend she's a saint, both my parents got a long list of issues, but they lied about how exactly they'd be training me," he told her while perching on the desk.

"What else have they done?..."

"You want a list? We don't really have time to get into everything let alone in detail,"

"Just tell me what you can,"

"Doing everything they can to keep themselves in power and create a larger and larger need for them. Purposely ignoring heteromorphic discrimination in order to bring crime up in rural areas. If they 'act up' like Spinner they have a new villain, if the hate groups do anything in the cities they bury it to make it seem like it was just one person. They've lobbied for community funding, and welfare to be continuously cut, raising crime rates as people struggle to survive. They've covered up domestic abuse, drugs, and excessive violence by pros. They have funded hate groups against so-called 'villainous' quirks, and the quirkless. The list goes on,"

"And how do you know Shigaraki won't do the same?"

Keigo shrugs, "Most of its trust that's hard to explain, but he also has a diverse team and wants them to be happy. At the bare minimum at least when you find out something about him it's better than what's assumed. You don't have to join us to not end up staying here to be clear, you're allowed to be a neutral party.

“But the biggest reason I trust him is, they rescued a little girl, Eri, Overhaul had been abusing her. They’re helping her learn how to control her quirk, any benefit they’ve gotten from her has been with her permission, and not mandated in order to be cared for. If the commission had Eri, they’d beat her until they got whatever they wanted out of her. For fuck sake they were already looking for my replacement,”

"I think I want to talk to him myself before I make a decision…"

"Alright, it might take a bit to arrange a proper meeting, but a bunch of us are planning on having dinner together, you're welcome to join us,"

"Okay, that works. Haw- Keigo, when did you decide to join them for real?"

"When Dabi was trying to get me to leave him alone, he could tell I was faking, you saw what the commission gave me… he told me to kill Best Jeanist. The commission decided they had gotten all the use they can out of him and told me to kill him. The League had reason to want him gone, but the Commission… if they were willing to do that to the number three hero of Japan, and currently most popular, then nothing was off the table for them,”

“Is he?...”

“I told Dabi the truth and gave him everything I had on the Commission, Best Jeanist is in an artificial coma, admittedly they’re in the same tanks as a bunch of the nomu, but we’re deciding on when to wake him up, what precautions to take. He’ll most likely be given a similar option as you,”
