Work Text:
Far too many candles were lit. What had they been thinking? But it was nice, Ei had to give it that, just because it was Valentine's Day. Having four candles lit in a smaller apartment was not a good idea any other time besides now. Absentmindedly she played with her new bracelet, Miko had given her a charm bracelet, and a picked-out heart charm.
It was one of her favorite gifts in a long, long, time. Now, she was fairly certain that Miko had liked the gift she’d gotten her. But, Ei was worried that she may have gone a bit overboard… It wasn’t often that she did big and dramatic, anything really.
But she’d managed to get Miko flustered, and Ei took that as a win. She’d written a letter, figured out how to burn the edges, and Ayato had convinced her to even spritz a bit of perfume in it. Put a pressed red rose between the pages, she did have to buy the flower, not quite sure how it was necessarily done after her first couple of failed attempts.
She’d even gone back to the same flower shop where they’d bought their December flowers, they’d been such help. It’d been nerve-racking since Miko had gotten her the charm bracelet, Ei wasn’t sure if she should have gotten something more… Physical and less papery, but it turned out it hadn’t needed to be a concern.
Cutting a blood orange into slices, Ei tried her best not to get any of the juice on her white silk nightgown. Looking up she grinned at her fiancé, who was wearing a matching nightgown, the only difference between theirs was that hers had purple flowers on the bottom hem, and Miko’s was pink.
“I don’t remember these tasting as chalky as they are now.” Miko hummed, glaring at the bowl of candy hearts, with little sayings engraved on them.
“Let me try one.” She held her hand out, putting down the knife, she didn’t want to accidentally stab anyone. A lawsuit wasn’t how she wanted to spend her Valentine’s Day. Examining the blue heart, with the phrase “be mine” on it, and she quickly ate it and made a face.
“Guess I was right,” Miko laughed, standing up from their kitchen stool and walking over behind the counter. “Even with a sweet tooth like yours, it can’t taste good.”
Rolling her eyes, she resumed slicing the orange and placing them in a bowl next to the frozen chocolate strawberries. For them, a (small) part of valentines day had been about finding the right balance of fruit and sweets, fructose and sucrose.
“Come on,” Miko whined, tugging on a strand of her hair. “Don’t bother starting on the next orange, we have enough and I want to watch the movie.”
“We don’t even have the movie picked out.” Ei pointed out, but she put the knife down in the sink and walked over to the couch.
Behind her, Miko followed with the glass bowl, placing it on their coffee table and falling back onto the couch, petting one of their cats that had been already on it. Her mouth twitched into a smile as she watched the pink-haired lady pull one of the kittens, Holly, onto her lap. Picking up her glass of champagne on the table from earlier in the day, she sat down beside the two.
“What do you want to watch?” Ei asked, resting her head on Miko’s shoulder, curling her fingers around stray strands of hair.
“A love story!” Her financé exclaimed, cuddling back, wrapping an arm around Ei’s shoulders as she watched their TV light up. “Like a Studio Ghibli movie or something.”
Cocking her head (as best as she could in her positions) she looked at Miko quizzically. “Those two don’t really go hand in hand you know.”
Huffing, the lady beside her thought for a moment. “What about The Wind Rises?”
“About the engineer in love with planes?” Ei confirmed, not sure why Miko was thinking of that one out of the Studio Ghibli films.
This was definitely who she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
Someone who wanted to watch a plane movie.
On Valentines Day.
“Yeah, so?” Miko muttered, looking down at the kitten (were three-month-old cats still considered kittens?).
“Howls Moving Castle is more of a love story…” Ei added in. “Or well, even Spirited Away has more than The Wind Rises.”
“No,” The lady beside her looked up indigently. “Spirited Away does not have romance in it. That’s like trying to say that Castle in the Sky has romance in it. Those are like, friendship.”
“Technically, Castle in the Sky does have romance, there’s the guy that’s always following her around.” She remarked offhandedly, trying to recall the movie. “Weren’t their pirates too? Like, the ones that were definitely lesbians.”
“Don’t ask me, I can’t keep movies straight.” Miko sighed, and the kitten began to purr, making her wonder where the other two cats were.
“Fine then,” Ei fiddled with her glass, taking a sip and relaxing a bit as she swallowed before putting it down to get the clicker. “What do you suggest then?”
“I want the peach movie then.” She declared, letting the kitten nuzzle her fingers as she grinned at it.
What the fuck was she going on about?
“Peach movie?” Ei questioned, turning to her financé an odd look.
“Call me by your name,” Miko corrected herself. “That’s the one.”
Trying to figure out why the lady would ever want to see that movie before it dawned on her, of course, she wanted to watch it. “Sounds like a great idea.”
Sharp, high-pitched laughing came from the woman, jumping off of her lap, Holly narrowed her eyes at them from her perch on the coffee table. On cue, the other two appeared, Sylver halting to give her best cat glare while Tinsel hurried over, curious. At first, the mini-Sylver kitten had almost completely followed the mother cat around, now she alternated between Ei and Sylver.
On the other hand, Holly seemed to be glued to Miko, and the kitten was a brat . Even worse than the mother cat was, which Ei wasn’t sure had been possible. Brushing against her legs, it made her tuck her legs onto the couch, pulling a blanket over them from where it had been resting on the arm of the couch.
It was her turn to cuddle with a kitten, and she gladly welcomed Tinsel into her arms, curling up even more against Miko. Soon enough Holly would be back in her fiancé’s lap, and Sylver either in the cat tree or on her legs. They’d seen the movie once before, back in high school actually, so it would be nice to rewatch it.
Turning the movie on, she tossed the remote on the coffee table with a (sort of) loud clang, causing the mother cat to dart over to them and up onto the couch, picking Ei’s legs to spend the remainder of however long she decided to bless them with her presence. She pulled Miko over to face her and smiled softly.
“Happy Valentines Day love.” Ei kissed her, body languid and relaxed.
“Same to you darling.” Miko laughed, returning the kiss, tasting faintly of cherry chapstick.
Now, why this wasn’t the most traditional Valentine’s Day that they’d heard of, it was how they wanted to spend the day. And well, they did have an awfully fancy dinner reservation for later, they mostly wanted to laze around and enjoy each other's company. Ei wanted Miko to be hers for today and forever on, she loved her fiancé for her own good.
What a nice way to spend their holiday…
