4:15AM
Elsa turned off her alarm and walked to the bathroom to start her day. They were getting some new guys this morning, so she’d need to be at the boathouse early to check in with Coach Mattias. If she remembered correctly, with the new guys, they’d have three eights and a four now. She wasn’t sure if there was a new coxswain coming in, or if Mattias would be making yet another poor lightweight be the new one. That’s how she had started, after all.
The sky was just starting to glow on the eastern horizon as she got in her car. Early morning practices did have some advantages in the summer.
She saw just three cars already there. Good–she was early. Olaf biked in just as she was locking her car.
“Hey, Elsa!” he called over. “Gotta lock up, I’ll see you inside!”
Elsa waved, and walked in. Mattias was inspecting the boats and looking at his clipboard.
“Good morning, Elsa!”
“Good morning, coach,” she replied. Have you decided on the boats yet?”
“I’ve got something for today. I’m going to try a little something different each day this week, so we can figure out who works together. A lot of these guys only graduated college a few weeks ago, so we’ll see how they do together.”
“Good morning, Olaf,” he called out. “Good, once Rapunzel gets here, we can plan out the practice.”
“Won’t there be enough rowers for four boats?” Elsa asked.
“Yes,” Mattias replied. “I’m glad someone actually read that email attachment this weekend.”
“So what’s the plan?” Olaf asked.
“Yelena’s team practices in the evening, so she agreed to come in and cox the four this morning.”
“Then?” Elsa asked.
“She’s got an odd number of rowers, so she’ll send one of them to us.”
“So just like what happened to me,” Elsa laughed.
