Work Text:
Eddie walked to Steve's house, taking in the late spring breeze. He stopped at a field of wildflowers and picked a handful on impulse, creating an ad hoc arrangement as he walked to keep his hands busy. He finished by tying the bunch together with a broken ponytail holder that he fished out of his pocket.
Steve answered the door on the third ring. "Sorry, I was in the kitchen putting some snacks together." His eyes fell on the flowers. "What's that all about?" He laughed into a smile.
"What's what all about?" Eddie's impromptu art project already slipped his mind. "Oh, this! This is, uh, for you! Yeah! For inviting me over!" Smooth one Munson, he thought to himself.
Steve took a beat to get a hold of himself, afraid to let his overwhelming appreciation take over. "You didn't have to do that for me, Eddie."
"And you didn't have to abuse your employee discount renting all the movies I was too broke to see when they were still in the theater, but here we are."
Steve nodded and welcomed Eddie inside. They headed to the kitchen, where Eddie took a good look at the spread Steve set out, and Steve placed his flowers in a small, simple glass vase.
----------
The next day at work, Steve filled Robin in on the mini film festival.
"These are cute," she said, gesturing to the vase Steve brought in and set on the video counter. "They brighten up the place."
"Thought they would," Steve added. "Eddie brought them over yesterday."
"Wait, Eddie brought you FLOWERS?" Robin was beside herself.
Steve's ears colored red. "Well, yeah ok, but it's not like, it doesn't mean anything. It's just nice, you know? Eddie did a nice thing and I think it's nice." He grabbed a stack of videos to reshelve in order to stop his rambling. "That's all, ok?"
"You're dinguses, the both of you!" Robin called after Steve as he vanished down an aisle. She looked back at the vase, smiling affectionately. God these two were hopeless, but maybe someday they'd figure their shit out.
Maybe someday they'd even figure out that Eddie brought Steve a bouquet of forget-me-nots.
