Three days into the nine-day Paris Fashion Week and we already have gossip on weight gains, tantrums, last-minute changes and the lamentations of unpaid interns. Amidst the glitz, glamour and spritzes our sources are telling us that Gong Jun, Prince of the Runway, has returned for one night only at the LV show. We all know that Gong Jun left the life of a supermodel over three years ago to fully invest in his fashion empire, GJ, a brand which no one expected would end up rivaling the biggest fashion labels in just under a decade. According to our sources, Gong Jun has not mellowed since his modeling days; apparently, the man fired the whole stylist team contracted by LV…

Gong Jun was about to snap at the makeup artist if she didn’t stop commenting about the bags under his eyes or how difficult it was to apply the purple eyeshadow. Because apparently Asian eyes were exotic and hard to apply eyeshadow to, despite there being over 1.5 billion Chinese people in the world.

He wasn’t in the fucking mood; he had taken a thirteen-hour flight from Shanghai to Paris just so that he could do the photospread and walk the runway as a favour to LV, who had always been good to him. They were good to him when he was that skinny Chinese kid whom nobody had wanted, they had signed him up for a campaign. Even he had been surprised - back then, his English had been broken and heavily accented; each word felt like he was breaking his own tongue just to get it right. Gong Jun was stubborn, however, and he had wanted to be the best. So, he practiced and practiced. He forced himself to think in English, to imitate a stupid posh accent. With his newscaster diction, people started thinking that he was a native speaker. Gong Jun would just smile shyly and get on with the job, and remember the people who treated him well.

So yes, when LV wanted a favour, Gong Jun made time in his busy schedule because he believed in paying back his debts - besides, being on good terms with LV could only be a smart business choice. The fact the Fashion Week promo coincided with the first public book-signing appearance of Zhou Zishu, the most amazing author of all time, was not the reason why he said yes to LV and cancelled all his meetings for the week, no matter what his team thought; he knew how they made fun of his purely intellectual crush. Gong Jun was hardworking and professional but if the makeup test fucked up his chances of meeting Zhou Zishu, he wouldn’t be held accountable for his actions. To top off the whole trying experience, he had only managed to down four cups of coffee, three bottles of water and a pathetic little packet of cheese and crackers that his assistant had grabbed from the plane in the past 24 hours. He might be a bit hangry.

Gong Jun had made sure that he would never go hungry again because of someone else's schedule and power. That was because he remembered being 21 and trying to make it in Beijing as an actor; he had starved himself both because he didn’t have the money and needed to lose his baby fat. It had been soul-crushing, and a bitter lesson for someone with so many hopes and dreams. He had been young and naive, and really shouldn't have accepted some of the offers he got. But Gong Jun had learned, and had left that cesspool of human shit behind him. He was in control of his life now - of what he wore, how he wanted to look and of his fashion label. He didn't have to put up with shit.

He was starving and tired, but he could still tell when someone was hiding their fucking racist tendencies under a thin veneer of professional concern. As a Chinese man in a predominantly white industry, Gong Jun had seen and experienced it all through the years - boy, did he fucking get it. It had been years since Gong Jun had to put up with this sort of shit, not since he stopped being that Chinese twink and became Gong Jun the supermodel with a multi-million dollar fashion label. But apparently, just because he stopped actively walking shows for over four years, the fashion world had forgotten what a green-tea bitch he could be.

“Enough,” Gong Jun snapped, cutting the makeup artist off mid-sentence. He turned his head to look at his assistant, Julie. “Get me a new makeup artist, preferably someone who knows how to apply makeup to ‘exotic’ eyes.”

In the sudden silence, Gong Jun looked back at the makeup artist - Audrey or Annette, whatever the fuck she was called - a sharp smile firmly in place on his face.

“You can leave now.”

Zhang Zhehan had moments where he wasn’t sure how this had become his life. Yes, he knew the overall shape of how he had gotten here, a penthouse suite in one of the most prestigious hotels in Paris. What he wasn’t sure about was how everything had fallen into place for him so that he could reach such a point in his second career. He was the theatre kid who lived up to every stereotype out there - he was loud and excitable, and hadn’t been able to stop singing and dancing all around the place. Somewhere between becoming a famous actor and the complete implosion of his career and life, however, he embarked on a new, unexpected path.

If he had to pinpoint the exact moment things took a turn for the better, it was probably when Xiaoyu stood in the middle of his living room with his notebooks in hand. Well, it was a bit before that, half a year into the whole clusterfuck of him becoming a social pariah and a shut-in. He had come close to climbing the walls of his apartment, and couldn’t see any light at the end of the whole shitshow that was his life. Things had become a tad dicey when it came to his self-care, especially since he was refusing to answer calls from his mum. It was a combination of desperation, boredom and the little voice in his head telling him that he needed a diversion from the lawsuit which finally forced him to start on the homework from his therapist - to start a journal.

So, he started writing, except he couldn’t write about what happened to him; it was too close and too painful, and he wanted to cry and scream every time he started spiralling in that direction. But Zhang Mama raised no quitter, and Zhang Zhehan started writing short fictional stories in English, because writing in Chinese was a fast-track to panic attacks and bouts of depression. So, he switched to English, and wow, was that an experience in sheer frustration and anger. Nevertheless, he kept at it, and he got better at writing in the foreign tongue. He wrote about a knight in a fantasy land who was betrayed by all those he trusted and loved; abandoned and hurting, he was a ball of rage and sadness, the only thing left to him an urge to destroy. Yes, it was a bit too on the nose, but it was therapy homework, and it helped.

The thing was, once he started, he couldn’t stop. Before he knew it, he had somehow written a 600,000-word high fantasy novel series about a disgraced knight who fought to protect his kingdom. He wasn’t going to do anything with it, and just leave it in his notebooks, because he had thought he could still act again. Of course, it didn't work out that way, and Xiaoyu had somehow found his draft. Clutching the little black notebooks to his chest as the tears and snot ran down his face, he had forced Zhang Zhehan to type out the story on his laptop and edit it.

And Zhang Zhehan had done as Xiaoyu had asked, because Xiaoyu had been there for him throughout the whole soul-destroying journey. It was months of frustration, with him double-checking his grammar and his spelling, and buying a hard copy of a thesaurus, because despite years of learning English, his vocabulary was pathetic. Then, he was done - as much as a would-be author could be done without a professional editor. He had been proud; it was the first thing he could be proud of in the two years since his life was destroyed in one day.

He let Xiaoyu read it, and Xiaoyu cried and cried. After he finished the story, he dried his tears and then started making calls and sending emails; all in English, which he painstakingly brushed up on just so that he could read Zhang Zhehan's stupid story. It didn't take a genius to realise that Xiaoyu was only contacting foreign agents and publishers. Zhang Zhehan wasn't hopeful - what English-speaking agent or publishing house would take in a fantasy novel series by a Chinese writer whose English had only been primary school-level at best just over two years ago? When Zhang Zhehan saw the look of determination on Xiaoyu's face, however, he bit back the words of doubt and decided to keep on writing. A few months later, when he was finally deemed innocent, but was still unable to get a job as an actor, Xiaoyu walked up to him and handed him the phone which he had been clutching to his chest.

Five minutes later, Zhang Zhehan was telling someone that he had five books’ worth of content ready to go, and in what felt like the blink of an eye, he signed with an American agent.

That was all to say, the reason he was sitting in a penthouse suite sweating buckets was because he was going to have his first public book-signing, and he was scared shitless. Showing people his real face, letting himself be seen in a crowded room - even when there would only be twenty carefully selected guests - was terrifying. The fear of being recognised and being judged, and the possibility of a physical attack, was always in the back of his head nowadays. His therapists told him it wasn't healthy, and he agreed with them; unfortunately his brain didn't want to listen, and this useless fear made him so fucking angry.

But Zhang Mama didn’t raise a coward, and Zhang Zhehan was honestly sick of hiding. He wanted to meet his fans, the ones who left comments on his twitter and the ones who write him letters, actual handwritten letters telling him know how his characters and his story had saved them.

Also, Zhang Zhehan wanted to live, to not be afraid anymore. So, here he was, not half an hour away from his first book-signing, and he was not going to throw up, dammit.

On if we will ever see Axu be happy: “I think the betrayal Axu suffered broke something fundamental in him. And he spent over a decade trying to rebuild himself. I don’t think he knows what it’s like to be happy anymore. The only thing he has, or had, in these first five books is his honour, and it wasn’t till he met Zhen Yan in book 6 that he started to see what life could still offer him. Zhou Zishu book signing/meet & greet REVIEW

As you all know, I was selected as one of 20 lucky fans to meet Zhou Zishu, Hugo Award-winning author of the “The Jade Knight” series:

I got the golden ticket, as they say, because I have been running this fan account on this hellsite for nearly five years now, and I have done annual charity drives under Zhou Zishu’s name for the past three years, as he had wished. We all know that Zhou is a super private person; hell, we didn’t even know if he was a he or she until the release of book 3 of the “The Jade Knight” series, since he had never done any sort of book-signing or any interviews outside of print. So, when they announced he was doing a private signing for his most loyal fans last year, the fandom sort of spiraled into insanity. I still can't believe I got selected, and that they paid for my flight and accommodation (with RETURN ticket) in Paris! Guys, I honestly had one of the most insane and amazing times of my life for the past four days, and it all culminated in me and 19 other super fans meeting him on Tuesday night. We’ve all been asked not to publicize where the event was held, and I’m going to respect that. Let’s just say that the venue was amazing, and we were all so excited to meet our hero.

I wasn’t sure what to expect because no one has met Zhou ZIshu before. So, when this tall figure in a large sweater and khaki pants, with the world’s largest bucket hat, rocked up and waved nervously at us, we sort of lost our collective shit. There was a lot of clapping and maybe some shouting. There was this tall dude, like 6’2, who was honestly squeeing. It was hilarious, but it just shows how excited we all were. And Zhou Zishu is like, how do I say this, he is super nice. Soft-spoken, articulate and actually super funny. He talked about how he started the “The Jade Knight'' series because he was working through some huge mental health issues, and external circumstances in his life meant that he had to switch careers. Apparently, there was some sort of litigation process that took years to resolve, and when it was done, he had to start a new career. So his manager, who is apparently his childhood friend, pulled him out of his funk and got him to publish. Bro for life.

Zhou Zishu Gives 'The Jade Knight' Update - Esquire

If you are reading this article, then you will know about the highly anticipated seventh and last novel in the “The Jade Knight” series, a high fantasy series which has dominated the top spot in every single novel ranking list. The books are unique in that it is an English-language high fantasy series inspired by ancient China and featuring a host of Chinese characters and only one white person. It is all the more unique when you find out that Zhou Zishu, a former Chinese national, wrote the first four novels in one year. This is not your Tolkien-inspired fantasy; in fact, there is very little of the western fantasy influence that we are used to that we are all honestly unsure how the series became the hit that it is.

Nevertheless, it is one of the most popular series in the past decade, and has a legion of loyal and at times very passionate fans. Del Rey, the series publisher, obviously knew a good thing, and was smart enough to release the first four novels in two years before subsequently releasing book 5 and book 6 in each new year after that.

It has been over a year since the release of book 6, “By Raft Across the South Seas”, and wow, was that a trauma and a half to finish reading. Since then, there has been no word on the status of the seventh novel. Well, not until now. In a podcast with “fantasynovelfeels”, Zhou Zishu has confirmed that the book is halfway done and will hopefully be completed before the end of the year. For those who don’t know, that is still incredibly fast for publication.

Zhang Zhehan wasn’t sure what the fuck he was doing. He shaved and mourned his hard-earned beard a bit; it had taken him over a month to get to that length. And yes, it was a beard, no matter what Xiaoyu said; it was definitely better than what a teenager who had just hit puberty could do. He should be working on his book. His editor has been leaving him progressively shorter and blunter messages about how he has missed his last check-in. He was halfway through, but the second half just wasn’t happening. He wasn’t sure if he was going to let Axu die saving the country that killed his family, when the country would have killed him had his few remaining comrades-in-arms not sacrificed their own lives to smuggle him out of prison. It had taken six books for Axu to work through his betrayal, but now Zhang Zhehan was stuck. So, of course he decided this was a great time to ask a complete stranger out for coffee.

But Simon seemed really nice, and yes, cute. He had a really charming laugh, and he had such good insights into Axu and the themes in the series. Unfortunately, they had to cut their conversation short because there were other people in line. Zhang Zhehan had really, really wanted to meet the man again, but wasn’t sure how. And of course, as soon as Simon implied that he found Zhang Zhehan attractive, well, he took the chance. Sure, he was mostly a social shut-in nowadays who got near anxiety attacks in crowds, but sometimes, that core of crazy came out and did stupid things, like ask a complete stranger out on a coffee date.

No, a coffee meet-up, to talk about his books, and not just to try and get into his fan’s pants. That would be super weird and creepy. But Simon was so tall and his eyes were so pretty.

Gong Jun wasn’t sure how this happened. He honestly thought he had fucked up with Zhou Zishu, after he almost managed to break the man’s foot with his own hardcover books at their first and only meeting. But it seemed the ancestors were smiling down on him. Despite coming across as a bit of a creeper, he somehow managed to snag himself a date with Zhou Zishu. Yes, a date! Fuck, a normal catch-up between people. Gong Jun honestly hadn’t expected Zhou Zishu in the flesh to be like that. He hadn’t expected the soft voice, the amazing laugh and that amazing face. Fuck, when the man smiled, Gong Jun had known that he was a goner.

He was gonna date the hell out of Zhou Zishu. Gong Jun had game; sure, he hasn’t dated in four years, and the last few relationships he had were more like hookups, but he knew, deep in his bones, that Zhou Zishu was special. Yes, Gong Jun was a ruthless businessman and a cold bitch in the fashion industry, but he also believed in love at first sight. And maybe, just maybe, Zhou Zishu was the one.

As one of Paris Fashion Week’s hottest show, Louis Vuitton always finds ways to top itself each year, and Nicolas Ghesquière did not disappoint. It was a packed house, with star-studded guests from all over the world, but none was greater than that of Gong Jun. Le Petit Prince was back and, from his flawless walk at the Louis Vuitton show, the man has not lost any of his charisma or swagger. Gong Jun closed the show in a beautifully embroidered emerald green suit, and all eyes were on him throughout.

His face is objectively perfect - hundreds of thousands of words have been written about his face, his hands, his body. Yet despite all photos of him, the man is notoriously private.

Gong Jun broke into the modeling scene at the age of 22, and his rise was fast and awe-inspiring. Then, at the height of his career, he retired and decided to build a fashion business. The naysayers were out for blood, and the fashion industry waited for him to go down in a blaze of glory. Against all odds, Gong Jun succeeded, and the rest was history.

“At least you didn’t run,” Zhou Zishu said, laughing softly and taking a step closer to him.

“I feel that I need to be honest. I ran up the five flights of stairs because the lifts were too slow.” Dear ancestors, there was no hope for him anymore. He was done for. All the social skills he had acquired in the past decade disappeared in the face of Zhou Zishu’s whole existence.

“Wow.” Zhou Zishu’s eyes widened and he gaped. Gods, he was so fucking cute.

“I didn’t want to wait to see you.” Yeah, let’s just commit. He was already an embarrassment of too much honesty and screaming anxiety. What else had he left to lose?

“Oh.”

“Um, I probably should tell you that I can be super intense. My family and friends call me a control freak.” Yep, honesty was the best policy, no way to hide what he was like.

“Gong Jun, we have been speaking to each other for months. I know you,” Zhou Zishu said, tone dry as the desert, and he moved closer.

“Yeah. So.” Oh, gods, Zhou Zishu was so close to him now. If Gong Jun took one more step and raised his hand, he could touch him.

“My name is Zhang Zhehan,” Zhou Zishu said, voice soft and unsure.

“What?” What was happening, was Gong Jun having a breakdown? Was he having an auditory hallucination?

“My name. It isn’t Zhou Zishu. That's my pen name. My real name is Zhang Zhehan.” Zhou Zi - no, Zhang Zhehan said, his whole body one taut line. Gong Jun wanted to touch him, to ease the tension from his body.

“Oh. Well, hello, Zhang Zhehan, my name is Gong Jun,” Gong Jun said, and took the last step to meet Zhang Zhehan halfway.

REVIEW OF “Quatrain of the Seven Steps”

GUYS, I just finished reading the book an hour ago, and I had to take the last hour to just process. SPOILERS!!

So, the big thing out of the way: we all knew that the ending could have gone either way. The past six books set Axu up to either live for himself, or sacrifice his life for a country and a people that betrayed him and didn’t love him. I gotta be honest, while my heart wanted Axu to be selfish and leave, I also knew he couldn’t just abandon his kingdom, because he still loved and cared for it so very much. Him leaving and letting millions die would have gone against everything that made Axu the character we all fell in love with. So, I was prepared for his death. Like, so ready. Because there was no other way. The only thing that could have saved Axu was Zhen Yan, and Zhen Yan was out of the picture at the end of book 6, off on his trip to travel across the seven seas, and taking with him all the people that Axu needed safe. We had our grand goodbyes in book 6, the sad smiles, the touches on the shoulder. We knew Zhen Yan had to leave to protect the remnants of Siji and Ghost Valley, because that was his character development, to grow and mature, and to realise his responsibility to the thousands that depend on him.

So, in book 7, Axu is alone once more, but it’s an Axu who is at peace with his choices and with himself, knowing that all he holds dear is safe. It’s an Axu with no regrets and nothing holding him back. And holy shit, Zhou Xu, leader of Tian Chuang, the Jade Knight, is fucking amazing and so fucking terrifying with his strategies, his martial arts and his ruthlessness. I can’t believe his whole plan was to put himself in a situation to be captured just so that he could get close to the Emperor and fucking put his hairpin through that motherfucker’s throat. Like, holy shit. That whole sequence of events leading up to that confrontation was so intense and super sad, because you could tell at one point, decades in the past, they might have loved each other. Might.

And then the reveal that Axu is dying anyway, something which goes back all the way to book fucking 1. When the Emperor was still Prince Jin, he poisoned Axu with that ten-year-old plum wine buried under the plum trees. And AXU KNEW. OMFG! Thinking back, the clues were there, the way Axu fought less and less, and how he kept on talking about how time was limited. And OMFG! Zhen Yan probably knew. And guys, I was legit crying and ready to just die.

When they had Axu up there on the execution platform, I was so ready to throw my book against the wall. But the least I could do was witness Axu’s final moments.

EXCEPT OMFG! ZHEN YAN ARRIVES WITH THE CAVALRY, DRESSED ALL IN WHITE, AND RESCUES AXU!!!! AND THEN THE REVEAL THAT ZHEN YAN WENT OFF IN SEARCH OF AN ANTIDOTE FOR AXU’S POISON!!!! AND HE WAS SUCCESSFUL.

Like, holy fuck, I had forgotten about the conversation they had in book 3 about the mythical Winter Ice Blade, the grass that could cure all poisons, but it was extinct, and Zhen Yan said, “The great Healer’s Valley supposedly had a map to the Winter Ice Blade. But alas, they were destroyed over two decades ago.” BOOK 3!!!!

And just GODS, that final scene, the two of them wandering down the mountain path, side by side.

CRIES.

I swear, I will be more coherent tomorrow.

Fuck that. They couldn’t hurt him or his loved ones anymore, not now that the ringleaders were in jail and he removed himself completely from the playing board. He was no longer a threat to some fucking kid’s bright future in Chinese entertainment. He had a life in a different country, with new friends and a new career. What happened ten years ago didn’t control him anymore, he had made sure of it.

He heard the door open and close, followed by soft footsteps making their unerring way to him. Always.

He didn't turn around, and just kept looking out the bay windows at the park below. A warm presence stopped behind him. An arm went around his shoulders to draw him closer, and he let himself be pulled into a densely muscled chest - the trainers sent by the studio were doing wonders for his boyfriend. Long, strong fingers dragged through his loose hair and scratched his scalp lightly, and he felt the line of tension from his neck to his shoulders slowly relax and fade.

“Hey, I love you. Let’s go for a walk under the sun.”

And Zhang Zhehan smiled as he leaned back, letting Gong Jun take his weight.

“SHIVA” IS AMAZING

I finally saw “SHIVA”, and holy fuck, I was not expecting to be blown away by it. Look, none of us had an iota of hope for this movie. It’s a small movie about a little-known DC villain/antagonist, and a gender-swapped one at that (didn’t want to lean into the sexy Oriental female trope). To add to the negativity, we had a lead who was a model! A supermodel who, as far as we knew, had never acted before (we were wrong). And they literally filmed this movie in three months and had less than nine months to get the post-production done. No one can blame us for being skeptical; we were all pretty sure it was going to be a shitshow. But omfg. I cannot believe they made a two-hour high-level martial arts superhero (villain) movie; the action is top-notch, the pacing is perfect, and the acting is chef’s kiss. How did I NOT know that Gong Jun started his career as an actor?

I have now read and watched every single interview on this movie, and looking back, I should have trusted them more. The script was apparently written and ready to go two years ago, but there were some issues with DC (gender-swapping Shiva, and getting Tim Drake’s Robin. HOLY SHIT. WE GOT TIM DRAKE ROBIN IN THIS MOVIE), getting the perfect lead (over a thousand auditions), and the six months of stunt prep before filming. Apparently, Gong Jun was cast a year in advance and started training four months before filming. The man stepped back a little from being a CEO of a multimillion-dollar fashion empire to play the part of Shiva (my girlfriend won’t stop talking about the brand GJ, something something pockets and zippers). And post-production was so short because there were minimal visual effects. So, while the rest of the world saw them pumping out a movie in a year, the actual development time frame was nearly three years. I am so impressed.

Amazon’s next multimillion-dollar bet: The Jade Knight Series

After the failure of their multibillion-dollar "Lord of the Rings" venture a decade earlier and other middling fantasy series, Amazon Prime has tightened the purse strings when it comes to the budget for high fantasy shows and movies in the past few years. After months of a bidding war between several streaming platforms and some rumored ball-crushing negotiations, Amazon finally won the rights to “The Jade Knight" series by Zhou Zishu (real name Zhang Zhehan). It is early days yet and we are not sure of all the details, but we do know that Zhang Zhehan and Del Rey have the option of taking the series to other platforms if Amazon does not film and air all seven books as season season live action adaptation. Zhang Zhehan is apparently attached to the series as an executive producer.

Guys! The Hollywood Reporter has a really detailed write-up on the Jade Knight live action adaptation. Apparently all the characters will retain the SAME ethnicity as their book counterparts. So. one white guy and two black women in a cast of mostly Asian characters. The writing team looks really diverse, half men and half women with a mix of ethnicities, and a mishmash of new and older writers. ZZH is the creator, the co-showrunner AND executive producer. Holy fuck. I don’t know how the fuck he managed that one. The other co-showrunner is Sera fucking Gamble. Holy shit, Carry on My Wayward Son just flashed through my head. Fuck you, Supernatural. But moving on from my trauma, they will also supposedly be getting a super duper amazing stunt team to do the wire work/wuxia fight scenes; at least a third of the people are going to be from the Chinese stunt industry.

…OMFG! That’s genius! Especially Gong Jun; the man was fucking amazing as Shiva. Shit, I know it’s been awhile but I’m still stunned that DC actually changed Shiva’s gender. And the fact Gong Jun carried it off too. Urgh. Gods, he was so hot as male Shiva. As for ZZH… I mean, the dude is already creator, showrunner and executive producer, you might as well let him be the lead character of his own book series. LOLS.

He can! I went down this fucking rabbit hole of c-dramas last year, and my friend forced me to watch ALL of his dramas. Gods, they were shit, but he was consistently good. However, I don’t think he has acted since the whole shitshow. He was really good in that BL drama he did, but it’s been over a decade since then, and he’s like in his 40s now, so probably too old to act as Axu.
