You giggled as you followed behind Bofur as he tugged your hand, clearly running towards something.
"Bofur, I am going to trip." You complained, tightening your hold on his hand as your feet catches yet another root, causing you to stumble slightly.
"The path is even, you won't." He assured you, pulling you along the dark path of the forest. You want to disagree with him, but curious it gets the better of you.
"What are we even doing here? And where are we going?" You asked, slightly nervous to have your eyes bound as you threaded through the forest. Bears lived in the forest and even if you knew Bofur would rather eat his hat than let anything happen to you, your covered eyes made your nerves shoot up at any noise close by.
"Are we there?" He let out a laugh at your question as he started to slow down, the ground starting to slope slightly downward.
"Not yet. Close your eyes." You rolled your eyes before closing them, resisting the urge to peek a teeny bit as he led you by hand again.
It doesn't take the two of you long to reach the destination Bofur was aiming for, and he let go of your hand.
"Stand here but keep your eyes closed for a little longer." He kissed your cheek before he stepped backward and plucked a large red rose out of his coat. Its petals had gotten slightly crushed, but that didn't hinder the beauty of the bloom, it was still beautiful, the dark red color fitting harmoniously into the dark greens of the forest. He fixed his jacket and straightened his hat, observing you and making sure that you didn't peek.
He quaffed the petals of the bloom slightly, making sure it looked the best before he turned to face you completely.
"You can open them now." Your eyes shot open to reveal a familiar forest clearing, thousands of fireflies flying in the cool night air, fluttering around the dark trees.
"Bofur, it's beautiful! Why haven't you told me of this?" You asked, slowly turning yourself around to see more, in total awe of the light show. The forest was special for the two of you, it was where you had met and established your courtship, and something told you it would also be the place where Bofur would propose when the time came.
"I wanted to surprise you." Your eyes returned to the dwarf that you loved so dearly, only now noticing the deep red rose in his hand.
Bofur handed the rose to you, and you took it, sliding your hand along the stem. He had removed the spikes, as he usually did, and you tucked the flower behind your ear for safekeeping. He then extended a hand to you, and you grasped it, only to be pulled towards him. The sudden force caused you to squeak as you collided gently with his chest, his hands dropping to your waist.
"Dance with me." You gave a small giggle and a nod as he started to rock you gently from side to side.
The dance started slow, the two of you gently swaying from side to side, his hands resting on your waist, yours wrapped around his neck. Your eyes wander around the deep green branches of the trees, the fireflies that rest on the branches. A lone thrush sings in the depth of the forest somewhere, but otherwise, it is completely quiet. The soft moss under your feet muffled any noise.
Suddenly, Bofur picks you up by the waist and spun you around, making you let out a shriek that turns into a laugh. The force lifted your feet off the ground and your joyous giggle rang through the forest as your toes brushed the plants on the ground and made the fireflies take flight.
You separate from his chest as you lean back to look at the light show the bugs are providing, and he spins you around again, this time by only your arm. You return to his arms after the twirl, the corners to f your mouth turning into a mischievous smirk.
Before Bofur can react anymore, you yank his hat off his head and take off running into the forest, laughing giddily.
"Lass! Give it back!" Bofur storms after you the moment he realizes what happened, but you continue laughing as you bounce over the roots and rocks of the forest floor, ducking to avoid branches. You can hear him gaining on you and you take a sharp turn to the left, hoping to gain a little more lead on him.
He catches you despite your quick turn, tucking you close to his chest as his hands find your waist. The sudden halt to your speed causes you to stumble, which causes him to stumble, and your wall onto the mossy ground atop of him. The landing is soft, and when you recover and realize what happened, you burst into laughter. You lay there, laughing for a while as his hands still rest at your waist.
When you realize he isn't laughing anymore, you turn your attention to him. He is looking at you with a soft smile on his face, the corners of his eyes filled with wrinkles as he smiles.
"What?" You ask, wiping your face, thinking there is something stuck there.
"Nothing. You are just so beautiful." He mutters, pulling your face down to meet his lips in a kiss. It's soft and light, love-filled, and doesn't last very long. When you pull apart, smiles are at each of your faces as you lay there, the quiet coolness of the forest and the millions of fireflies flying around you.
