Chapter Text
The couple was laying on their shared bed, trying to fall asleep which seemed especially difficult that night. Their shared and individual responsibilities as the prince and princess of Katolis had kept them busier than most days; Rayla had to train both new Dragonguard members that were on Katolis and some of the palace guard, and Callum was busy with his never ending research on all that could concern magic, High Council meetings and some other project that he needed to do. All of that sure would be enough to make them fall asleep as soon as they were in the bed, but nothing was farther from the truth.
Somehow their bodies were screaming for some well deserved rest, yet their minds just wouldn't let them fall into the blessed lands of dreams for the rest of the night. Instead, they were laying as they always did when this happened, Callum on top of Rayla’s chest, nuzzled in the crook of her neck while the elf lovingly ran his fingers through his husband's brown hair.
Rayla looked down at the High Mage’s head, still buried in the space between her shoulder and chin; she was taller than him, she reflected, though during their teenage years Callum was the taller one until she hit a growth spurt just before a few months of their wedding. Rayla smiled at that memory.
“Hey, Rayla” Callum said while looking up at his wife's bright violet eyes, seizing any though she might had in that moment and grabbing her full attention reflected on her focusing her gaze into the prince’s green emerald eyes
“Cant sleep, eh?” She said with a light chuckle and a smile that made him skip a heartbeat
“Neither can you” He answered, returning the cheeky smile just to go back to his expressionless face “Ive mean to ask you. Do you regret marrying me?”
Rayla only could see him with a concerned expression, just to start giggling and quickly shifting into laughter. Hearing her laugh made him look at her with a mixture of strangeness and bit of sadness
“Oh gods Callum, you are such a drama queen” Said the elf once her laughter died down “Of course i don't regret it, silly. Why did you think that?”
“Well, I assumed that you don't like all this royal stuff. You know, people treating you as “your highness”, receiving nobles from other nations, the both of us being to busy so busy that we can only be together at night or the fact that you can't go whenever you want to visit your family at the Silvergrove”
Rayla heard Callum talked; it was true what he said, for a moonshadow elf that, just a couple of years ago, hated human and was trained to be a stealthy assassin, it was weird now be referred as a princess, or having to accompany his husband at balls and yes, not having the freedom to go to the silvergrove when she wanted or spending more time with her dorky human mage sucked. But, even still, she prefer this to be eternally dating
Callum was -still is- the love of her life and would not allow him to doubt how much she adored and treasured him. She shifted on their bed, sitting on a more comfortable position and cupping Callum’s face on her hands, making him look at her violet eyes that resemble two shiny and beautiful amethysts, ones that he would never get tired of seeing
“Look Callum, what you say is true, but that doesn't mean i regret marrying you. In fact, i'm glad that we did because gods knows what they would have made you do in order to have a wife; and, yes, we could use more time alone but i'm fine with sleeping next to you and be woke up with the lovely sound or you rambling with yourself while reading a book” They both chuckled at Rayla’s last sentence said with her characteristic sarcastic yet humorous tone of voice “What i'm trying to say, i don't regret marrying you, not even the tiniest bit of me does. Okay, love?”
“Of course, sorry about doubting you dear” Callum said smiling at her and yet his tone was full of regret, though it would last much because Rayla had some sort of magical ability that made all of his bad feeling go away by just caressing his cheek like she was doing in that moment
Their faces were drawn near each other and soon enough their lips were pushed against the other’s for a short but sweet and lovely kiss. After their lips parted they looked at each other like they were dumb teenagers just experiencing their first love
“All good?” Rayla asked
“All good” Callum replied
Soon enough they were again laying down on their bed like they always did, Callum on top of Rayla’s chest, nuzzled in the crook of her neck while the elf lovingly ran his fingers through his husband's brown hair.
But then Callum looked up again as he just remembered something
“I almost forgot. ''The mage said ''The advisor told me that maybe it's time to have a child? I know its to soon and we should take it more slow, but they insisted saying that we are married for three years now”
Rayla, now a bit tired of his husband’s shenanigan -and just plain tired- slowly and carefully took Callum´s head and placed it back on her shoulder
“We’d figure something out” She said before yawing and shifting into a more comfortable position still embracing Callum as she drifted into sleep
As form him, the brown-haired prince watch his wife fall asleep, filling him with peace enough to make him start sleeping again, now without any doubts that he loved his wife and she loved him
