Chapter Text
A long time ago, there came a young soldier who once enlisted in the military of her Kingdom of Hylia. In the Hylian military, she met another person who was more youthful than she. The boy was already a knight – despite his young age – and he was more skilled than any adult the soldier had trained under. This boy, she had come to find out, was the son of another knight serving in the Kingdom. She saw the knight while training, observing a determined focus in his eyes that was ill-suited to his kind face. She spotted this young knight many times in the castle library, always hiding a recipe book behind a different one, trying to pretend he was studying the history of Hyrule.
The years went on, and this young boy trained urgently, as if he were fulfilling a purpose none knew about. She watched him leave for assignments and watched him return many times. She watched as he always came back the most injured, and she understood why. She could see his selflessness every time she was assigned into the same unit as him, the kindness he showed everybody in spite of his silence. She saw the sadness in his eyes when she was injured, and she knew he felt that he should have prevented it.
She and the young boy occasionally were designated to the same unit, and there she learned of the incoming threat to Hyrule. The soldier helped to track down the ancient machinery known as the Divine Beasts, and observed as the young knight helped the princess search for the right pilot for the Beasts.
She watched, and one day, the small boy returned with the mighty sword of legend. At that moment, she fully understood. The young boy was always destined to be the hero of legend. She watched as other members of the Hylian military cheered for the boy and celebrated his destiny, but she could not ignore the cold chill traveling up her spine.
She went to the library that night, and sourced one of the history books the young knight had hidden his cookbook behind. She read of the history of the legendary hero, and stared at the drawing of the beast they would have to fight. The soldier could not help but pity the young knight, and she prayed to Hylia for their victory over Ganon once again.
This young soldier grew into a knight herself, and she watched this other young knight grow into a member of the Princess’ Royal Guard. The world seemed heavy as ever on the shoulders of this Royal Guard, but she could see the kindness in his eyes as he watched the princess, and the gleam in his eyes when he ate something especially delicious.
It took no time at all for the world to end. The dame knew the champions left with the princess some time ago. Without the heroes or the princess anywhere to be seen, the King and his castle quickly fell to ruin under Ganon’s attacks. The guardians turned against the people, and as the dame fell to their attacks, she looked up at the fading blue sky – the same color as the eyes of the knight, she noted – and prayed to Hylia for the survival of the young boy. As the light faded and the sky turned red, she wished she would have spoken to that young knight and reassured him. She wished she could have told the boy that he would be okay.
