A Simple Moment

Summary:

Poppy Pomfrey is finishing off her work for the day when she notices a small tabby cat is awaiting her in her office.

Work Text:

Poppy Pomfrey released a sigh of relief leaning against her office door, just taking a moment for herself. The hospital wing always seemed at max capacity after the Quidditch Cup, today’s match had been a brutal final showdown between Ravenclaw and Slytherin with the former taking the win. After decades of experience being the Matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Poppy knew there would probably be another wave of students coming through her doors looking for a hangover cure the next morning.

The bass of the music coming from Ravenclaw Tower ran through Hogwarts’ walls, accompanied by the music from the celebrations being held by the other houses. Poppy smiled at their youthful shenanigans and hoped that some of the seventh years were capable enough to handle their peers when the morning arrived.

Standing tall, she dusted off her robes, making her way to her desk to fill in some last-minute order forms, for specific ingredients she needed for potion making. While Severus made most of the potions used in the hospital wing, Poppy still enjoyed experimenting with certain formulas and working on her own research within the field. Potions alongside Herbology were her favourite subjects when she had attended Hogwarts herself as she took pride in investigating the chemistry behind potion making, how to make certain potions stronger, or their effects, more specific when it came to healing.

Before being able to relax in her office chair, a small lump of fur had seemingly already made itself comfortable in her seat. Pulling the chair back revealed a sleepy looking tabby cat with familiar markings around its eyes. Rolling her eyes fondly, she scooped the tabby cat into her arms, stealing her chair back, and in return she received a loud meow in protest.

“Relax Minerva, I just need to finish a few things off and then I’ll return to our rooms if that’s what you desire,” she laid the tabby down in her lap, “But for now you’ll just have to settle with lounging in my lap for a bit.”

She felt Minerva snuggle deeper into her lap as she received a much more positive response in the form of purring, and she buried one hand into Minerva’s fur while the other started to finish up the waiting forms.

She smiled wistfully; she had been married to Minerva for almost four decades, having been married at quite a young age. Not that she would trade those decades for anything in the world. The pair had been good friends throughout most of their school days until something had shifted in their sixth year, and they found themselves naturally falling into a relationship. Both gradually began their careers at Hogwarts a couple years apart from one another and were lucky enough to be gifted shared rooms by Hogwarts herself. The staff mostly knew about their marriage mostly through the constant teasing they were subjected to from Pomona and Rolanda, who were a part of their original friend group from their student days. Dispelling her musings, she cracked on with her work as Minerva continued to peen at the attention she was getting from her wife.

“Minerva dear,” she sat down her pen, “I’m done, so if you wouldn’t mind getting down from my lap before I stand up and you end up being dropped on the floor.”

With that the tabby leaped gracefully from her lap, transfiguring into her wife before her feet hit the floor. Turning around Minerva smiled at her, and she was sure that she’d never grow tired from the warm feeling she received knowing that she was the one that made her smile.

“You know Poppy, your lap is a very comfortable place to sit.” She winked at her as Poppy interlaced their hands before leading her wife through into their shared room. Before they even made it fully through the door Minerva’s hands were wrapping around her waist as she spoke, “I’m glad you managed to get away form the wing. Today’s match had a couple of nasty falls.”

She hummed as she turned in Minerva’s embrace, “Well, as a Quidditch enthusiast you would know that there a very few matches where no players come away with no bruises at all, the same rules apply to House games.”

In response, Minerva leaned down and placed a chaste kiss against her lips. Poppy sighed into the kiss a little before pulling away and seeing the twinkle within her wife’s emerald eyes. There was a hint of mischief that laid behind her eyes that told Poppy that Minerva had already collected her winnings from the bet she made with Severus at the start of term.

She chuckled laying her head on Minerva’s shoulder, “I’m glad you were waiting for me. I’m sure you enjoyed collecting your winnings from poor Severus.” Minerva laughed in response, that deep throaty laugh that made Poppy’s eyes crinkle at the corners from how she was smiling, “Although my dear, word is that your precious Gryffindor’s are having a stellar party and I’m surprised you aren’t heading to their common room to tell them to keep their partying to the absolute minimum.”

Minerva smiled, interlacing their hands again while pulling Poppy towards their bedroom, “Darling I thought that tonight they deserved to have a little fun and I’m sure if they overdo it too much, they will be reaping the repercussions in the morning. And besides, I’d rather be doing something much more enjoyable, like cuddling with you in our bed.” With that she brought Poppy’s palm up to her lips, “How does that sound?”

“Perfect my love.” And with that they retreated into their bedroom, forgetting about the injuries, hangovers and destruction of property that most likely awaited them when the sun rose.
