I need you

Summary:

In which Jolyne convinces you to let her meet your parents at your cousin's wedding.

Notes:

Okay, a few days ago I watched this Indian movie called 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' which is basically about a gay couple- the plot of it is what inspired me to write this, except I made a couple of changes to make it shorter. But the moment I finished watching that movie, I wanted to write this and didn't get a chance to because of everything with school and shit. I love Jolyne and she's literally perfect for this plot. Also, this was meant for a POC reader, but it can still be read by anyone. I tried to keep it as simple as possible when describing cultural clothes, I only mentioned colors and not the design. I apologize for any spelling/grammar mistakes. Hope you guys like it, because I do!

Work Text:

“No, there’s no way I’m doing that.”

“Wait, listen to me Y/n, it’s a good idea, come on please.” Jolyne begs.

You shake your head, arms crossed while sitting on the train with Jolyne. Currently she is trying to convince you to let her meet your family. Your mom had called you and wanted you to come home for your cousin’s wedding, which you had made plenty of excuses to not go. Your mom was quite obviously mad at you for making excuses and when Jolyne found out about it, she persisted to go, “Jolyne. Please trust me, it is not a good idea. Look you and your parents are enough for me-”

“Yeah, but it’s not for me. I’ve never even met your parents Y/n. It’s not fair.”

You and Jolyne have been dating for two years now and she’s right, she hasn’t met your parents. And it certainly isn’t fair. But if your parents find out you’re gay, then it’s over for you.

You sigh, “Jolyne, look I’m sorry, but I’ve already told you, if they find out then I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s not going to be good.”

“Who said they have to know we’re together? We can just be ‘best friends.’”

You ponder on the thought, “Fine,” you see her face beam up with light, “But listen to me, there’s a few things we need to clear up.”

You see her nod eagerly, ready to listen to you, “First things first, do not do anything that will make them think that we’re together. Quite honestly, they won’t suspect it. But I know how touchy you get,” you see her about to deny, “Don’t even lie Jojo. Second thing, my parents aren’t who you might think they are, they certainly aren’t talkative with people. Third thing, you can for sure expect a fight during one of the events for the wedding.”

“Wait, why?”

You shrug, “That’s just how my family is. My sister is the only one that knows about us by the way.”

“Okay.” She slowly nods taking in everything you told her.

You text your sister letting her know that you will be attending the wedding, with a friend. She texted you back and told you to meet up at your childhood home, as that’s where most of the events, excluding the wedding will be.

Jolyne holds your hand squeezing it, “It’ll all be okay babe, trust me.”

You smile, squeezing her hand back, “I hope so.”

Getting off the train at your station, you guys stop at your’s and Jolyne’s home to grab some stuff. Then catch a taxi to your childhood since it was about one and a half hour away. The whole time Jolyne was asleep on your shoulder, while you couldn’t even get a wink of sleep in nervousness. What have I gotten myself into?

Reaching your childhood home, you wake up Jolyne letting her know you guys are here. You pay the taxi guy and get out of the car first while Jolyne is slowly gathering her senses. As you walk out, your family comes out to greet you, well most of them were already outside basking in the sunlight. They have their arms open to hug you as Jolyne is leaning against the car awkwardly just watching everyone.

“Y/n! Oh my hun, I missed you.” Your mom says.

“I missed you too mama.”

“Y/n.” Your dad nods at you, not saying much.

You suddenly remember Jolyne, “Oh yeah! This is my friend from college, Jolyne. Jolyne these are my parents and the rest of the family. I'll introduce you one on one later.”

She nods and brings her hand out for a handshake, as your mom shakes her head, “We don’t do that here.” She grabs Jolyne’s hand and pulls her in for a hug.

Your dad simply just nods at her and says nice to meet you.

“Here, you two must be tired. We have a room ready for the both of you,” Your mom says leading the way into the house, “We don’t have that many rooms so we have to share. I hope you don’t mind Jolyne."

“No, no,” She smirks, “In fact, I’m glad.”

You nudge her in her stomach. As you guys start settling in, your mom brings you guys some fruit.

“Your mom’s so nice. You sure she wouldn’t like me?” She winks.

“Ugh I wish Jojo. She likes you, but the moment she finds out, that will turn into dislike.”

She hums as you sneak into the thick blanket your mom gave you both, “I’m going to go to sleep, I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Wait Y/n, it’s only 8:39 pm, it’s too early.”

“You can sleep a little later since you slept the whole time on the way here, but I am so tired Jolyne. I need sleep.”

You notice her silence and look up at her. You notice the mischievous look on her face, “Jojo, stop whatever you’re thinking right now.”

“What? I’ve got a few things that can keep you awake.” She says closing the space between you and her.

“Jolyne.” You warn.

She sneaks under the blanket with you, her lips stopping at your neck. She peppers you with little kisses and then picks your sweet spot to suck on. She can feel your heart start to race and feel your skin get warmer at her touch. She slides her hands underneath your black tank top you were wearing, slighting pinching at your nipples. You let out a slight moan at the action, immediately covering your mouth with your hand.

“Jolyne, come on, stop. Someone could walk in.”

“No one will,” She moves up to straddle you and kisses your lips, “Don’t worry so much.”

You guys start to make out, neither of you have the chance to even pull away before the door opens. In walks your dad, dropping his phone at the sight of Jolyne on top of you and your lips and neck with marks of her green lipstick.

Your eyes widen at the sight of him, Jolyne immediately gets off of you. You both watch as he fumbles trying to pick up his phone. The moment he picks it up, he’s out the door.

“Jolyne, oh my fucking- he just- he just fucking saw us together.”

“Shit, what do you think he’s going to do?”

“I don’t know dude, should I talk to him? Wait no, let me wait it out.”

“Hey listen, it’s fine Y/n, talk to him later. It’s okay. Just sleep on it.”

You nod, you get up to close the door and then lay in bed with her. She pulls you in, your head resting on her chest. Listening to her heartbeat, you fall asleep.

Jolyne wakes up before you in the morning, when she wakes you up, she’s already freshened up.

“Shit, why didn’t you wake me up earlier?”

“I wanted you to get more sleep.”

“Thanks Jojo,” You smile, “Go eat breakfast, my sister should be out there.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah, I need to freshen up so it’ll be a while.”

“Okay.” She pecks your lips and leaves.

Once you’re done freshening up, you come out of the bathroom and notice your parents sitting on your bed. At the sight of them, you let out a small gasp, not expecting them to be here.

For the first time your dad speaks first, “Y/n. We need to talk.”

Shit, I should’ve known he was going to tell her.

“Your father told me what happened last night, with you and that girl.”

You sigh, “That girl has a name and if I remember you were quite fond of her last night.”

“That was before I knew she and you were in a ‘relationship!’” She shouts, immediately cringing at her loud voice, she lowers it and whispers, “Do you realize what you’re doing? What you’re doing is a sin.”

“It is not a sin-”

“Y/n, I know I don’t talk too much with you, but this is disgusting. No daughter of mine can be a lesbian.”

You stay silent as they both take turns jabbing at you with their words, “I will die before the world has to know that my daughter is gay.” Your dad threatens.

“Seriously? Emotional blackmail papa? Even if you do that, it won’t change what people say, so it really doesn’t matter in the end. I’m in love with Jolyne, and I want you guys to be happy for me and to support-”

“Shut up Y/n! Do you hear yourself? You’re picking her over your parents? You’re disgusting, I’ve never raised you like this.”

“This conversation ends here, listen to me Y/n, we will talk about this once the wedding is over. So for now- just lay low about this. No one should find out about it. We’ll let her stay until the wedding is done-”

“Wait what?! That’s not a good idea, they’re just going to be all over each other if that girl is still here. Let’s send her home.”

“If you send her back, then I will go back with her too. I will have this conversation with you after the wedding, but I will not send her back early.”

“Fine, just lay low Y/n.”

They leave your room, on the way out your mom gives you a dirty look. You walk out and sit next to Jolyne for breakfast. You smile at her, as she does the same, “Everything good? You talked to them?”

“Hm, yeah. Don’t worry about it for now.”

She seems kind of suspicious but lets it go. Soon enough, it’s the wedding. You’ve always wondered if you’ll ever get the opportunity to have a wedding with Jolyne with this crowd. You want your family to be there, but deep down you know it’s not possible with their mindset. As the couple is officially married, the party and dancing starts.

You see Jolyne in your cultural outfit that happened to be navy blue and light green. She looks absolutely gorgeous. As you admire Jolyne, she admires you, she’s never seen you in your cultural clothes. She wants your guys’ wedding to be like this.

Your dad glares at Jolyne as he sees her goggling her eyes at you. He looks at you and notices how you’re also looking at her. He comes up to you and grabs your arm, leading you away from her. Unbeknownst to you, Jolyne has a pout on her face at the sight of your dad taking you away and thinks of an idea.

You sit down at one of the tables, watching everyone dance to the upbeat music. You see Jolyne in the corner of your eye, making her way to you while dancing. You let out a heartfelt laugh when she reaches you. You let her grab your hands, leading you into the crowd of your family.

She spins you around, having your back to her front, she nuzzles her head into the back of your neck. One of her hands is on your waist, while the other is holding your hand. She has you dance along with her, having you follow her movements. She can feel your parents glare at her, and she couldn’t give a shit. She wants to live this moment forever with you. She might’ve made a mistake convincing you to let her see your parents, but she’ll make it up to you for sure.

At this point, everyone is watching the two of you. Some were confused at the close proximity of you two but still didn't know what was happening, some of them (your sister and cousins) were watching with lovey dovey eyes, and some of them were just hateful glares (specifically your parents).

Jolyne spins you around, having you face her. She watches your lips move upward into a cute smile. She could stare at you all day. You maintain eye contact with her, feeling yourself smile. You truly feel that Jolyne is an angel. How can she be so beautiful, you wish you had a ring to propose to her right now. It would be perfect, everyone’s here, even if they didn’t support it, they would still see it. So in some twisted way, your wish of them seeing your relationship would come true. You forget about the crowd around you both, forget about the prying eyes of your family and the glare you parents were giving you.

You put your hands on both sides of her face and pull her in for a kiss. You feel her plump lips over yours and her tongue already trying to fight its way into your mouth. Out of all the kisses you two have shared, none have been like this. It felt magical, you felt the butterflies all over again. She pulls you closer by your waist and smirks against your lips.

Your mother throws a shawl over the both of you and explains to your new wedded cousin’s in-laws that this is just a tradition that your family does, afraid of their reaction to both of your kissing.

“No need to lie, we don’t care what other people do with their life. It’s not our business, you don’t have to lie for the sake of us.” Your cousin’s new father-in-law explains.

Under the shawl, Jolyne breaks the kiss, breathing onto you, “Let’s go home Y/n. I need you.”

“I need you too, Jolyne.

Touching both of your foreheads together, you bask in each other’s warmth while your family is arguing within themselves. Who knew you were going to be the hot topic of your family this year? You couldn’t have been more happy in the moment.
