Press Pause

Summary:

Hermione Granger is concerned about Harry and reaches out to her best friend Luna for help.

Notes:

I know, I know, please don't hate me. This series is still 100 percent Marcus Flint and Hermione Granger, however I received a fabulous prompt from the Hermione's Nook group on Facebook to celebrate Luna's birthday and I really needed to tell this piece. It's a prequel that happens prior to Hermione and Matcus. I promise the next few pieces in the series will continue to tell Hermione and Marcus'story.

My prompt was the word PAUSE.

Please note that the section about dreamers and realists was from an episode of Modern Family and it has always stuck with me. It describes Luna and Hermione's friendship perfectly.

Also this fic was inspired by a quote from Albert Einstein and is also included. "He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed."

As always, Kiridraca has the patience of a saint as I ramble on until a plot forms.

Work Text:

Shortly after graduating from Hogwarts, Luna Lovegood did what precisely no one and everyone expected. She forged her own path to start a matchmaking business.

While she remained close friends with Harry, Ginny, and Neville, she counted Hermione Granger as her best friend. Logical, straight-laced, and current Healer Hermione Granger.

There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not, the opposite is true. See, the dreamers need the realists to keep the dreamers from soaring too close to the sun. And this was precisely why their friendship worked.

"I'm worried about Harry" Hermione confided to her best friend over lunch. "He's working too hard and it's starting to wear him down. I'm afraid he is going to make a dumb mistake in the field and get himself hurt."

"Do you want me to talk to him?" Luna asked. Talking to someone was her code for finding him a match.

"I think if he had something other than his work, he would have a better balance."

"What's up, Lu?" Harry asked as he pulled out the chair opposite Luna at a coffee shop on Diagon Alley called The Witch's Brew. He reluctantly accepted her invitation for lunch, he was supposed to be out in the field tracking a lack of rogue werewolves.

"We haven't talked in a while and I thought it would be nice to catch up." Luna replied in her dreamy voice.

As the bell above the door jingled, Luna felt an icy cold sensation down her spine, like a ghost running it's finger down her back. She looked up to see the source of the jingle and saw Susan Bones at the end of the queue.

After Hogwarts, Susan had started an apprenticeship with Olivander and was now the sole wandmaker in Britain. People came from all over Europe to be fitted with one of her wands, and by the look of her expensive robes and accessories, she was doing very well.

"Harry? Why don't you go talk to Susan? She just walked in."

"I know what you're trying to do and I don't have time, Luna. My job takes all of my time."

"He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed." Luna said, cryptically as she heard another jingle above the doorway

Harry shook his head in confusion.

"Harry, you need to press pause sometimes and actually enjoy the world you've been working so hard to make better."

Harry was about to defend his lack of personal life when a flash of movement caught his eye. Harry looked over towards the queue waiting to place their orders and saw a strange blur.

A disillusionment charm doesn't make someone invisible, it simply makes them blend into the background. It comes in handy when spying or eavesdropping, but as soon as the person moves, anyone who is paying attention can notice and Harry was well trained to always pay attention.

The person snuck up behind Susan, still waiting in the queue and made to grab for her purse. Before Harry could draw his wand, Susan had swung around, the large handbag in question hitting its target in the face while simultaneously casting a finite on the wizard. The would-be mugger brought his hands to his now broken nose and Susan used his distraction to her advantage, bringing her knee up to his groin. As the criminal lay in a fetal position, Harry placed magical suppression cuffs on him and called in one of his Auror's to take him back to a holding cell.

"That was bloody brilliant." Harry said, his eyes wonder and awe.

"Thanks, Harry." Susan replied. "He certainly wasn't being very stealthy with that poorly cast charm. He didn't even use a silencing spell on his shoes."

"Do you, I don't know, want some company? While you get your order?" Harry asked, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.

"I'd like that" Susan said, smiling.

As Harry and Susan continued their conversation, Luna left the cafe with a quiet jingle. She knew The Witch's Brew was the perfect place for lunch. She couldn't wait to tell Hermione that Harry was going to be just fine.
