Work Header

The guy next door

Summary:

Kirishima was more then okay alone. He had his dog, his work that was busy enough, his friends... but when one night his neighborhood asks for help, something beautifull might arise from it.

Work Text:

„If you wanna be with her then fucking leave! Now! I don’t fucking need you!“

Kirishima was used to the screaming from the other side of his living room wall. He moved into that apartment building only a month ago, but the first thing he learned was that the young couple living next to him was extremely loud. In more than one way. And the walls were apparently thin.

He was used to the arguments. They were normal. But it never got heated this much before.

„Katsuki, you can’t mean that. Not now when you’re...“

„I fucking mean it! Every fucking word! The apartment is mine, so get the fuck out of here you motherfucker. I don’t want to see your fucking face ever again.“

„Calm down, those are just hormones...“

„No, they are fucking not! Get the fuck out of here! I won’t repeat myself.“

The next thing Kirishima heard was a slam of the front door against the wall they shared. Loud steps echoed away from his doors and towards the elevator at the end of the hallway. Only when he heard the elevator starting to descend, did a broken scream echo from the other side of the wall. The front door in the apartment next to his slammed shut once again.

Kirishima laid back on his couch, hoping to get the nap he so much needed after work. His fingers run through the fur of his dog curled next to him on the couch. As he drifted off to sleep, his mind still wandered toward the argument he just heard.

Later that day, when Kirishima was finishing cooking his dinner, there was a soft knock on his front door. He wasn’t exactly expecting anyone, so he switched off the stove, put the pot down, and walked towards the door. When he opened them he was met with a blond guy, probably his age.

„Hey, I am...“

„Katsuki Bakugo. You live next door.“ Kirishima interrupted the blond guy with a smile. He noticed the name tag on his door every time he walked down the hallway toward his apartment.

„Ehmm... yeah, I...“ The blond looked shocked as he stuttered, searching for words. He was nervously playing with the sleeves of his oversized hoodie. Talking with strangers wasn’t apparently his thing.

„I am Eijiro Kirishima. Nice to meet you.“ The redhead offered his hand to the blond who took it and gently shook it. „Can I help you with anything?“ Kirishima asked politely.

„Yeah. Well, I know this is gonna sound crazy...“ he sighed. „...but I need someone to pull out my pan from the bottom cabinet, cause my boyfriend decided to be a dick and cheat after he knocked me up, so now I can’t even get to half of my things because of the stupid stomach.“

Bakugo’s words weren’t what Kirishima was expecting, and he made it kinda obvious. Unintentionally. His reaction was easily readable to the other guy standing in the hallway. The blond sighed again and lifted the hem of his oversized hoodie, revealing the quite big pregnant belly.

„I am trans. Things just happened. Can you help me or not?“ The tone of Bakugo’s voice changed from demanding to defeated so quickly that Kirishima finally got out of his head.

„Yeah. Ehmm, sorry for...that.“

„Whatever. I get it that you don’t see pregnant men every day.“ Bakugo’s lips twitched to a little smile, and Kirishima breath out in relief.

„Yeah. You are actually the first one in my life and with my work, it says a lot. Sorry again. Lead the way.“ Kirishima said with a giggle as he showed his hand toward the other’s apartment.

Bakugo turned on his heels and started to walk down the hallway. Kirishima grabbed his keys from the hanger next to the door, walked out, slammed the door behind himself, and followed the blond guy.

In Bakugo’s apartment, he noticed that his apartment was a mirror version of his own. The furniture was simple, in a modern white style, yet the place didn’t miss the feeling of home. It looked perfect. The only thing out of the place was the temperature.

„Wow, man, how are you not freezing here?“ He asked as he walked through the apartment towards the kitchen.

„That asshole liked it that way, and I have no idea how to change the stupid thermostat cause he never bothered to show me.“ Bakugo stopped before the cabinet next to the fridge and knocked on it. „You know how a frying pan looks?“ He looked up at the redhead.

„Hey, I might look stupid, but believe it or not, I am actually a decent cook.“ Kirishima laughed as he kneeled before the opened cabinet and reached inside, pulling out the pan Bakugo was asking for.

„I won’t believe it until I see that. Well... taste that.“ The blond smirked as Kirishima stood up. He reached for the pan that Kirishima still held in hand. The redhead was quicker and lifted it above his head, out of Bakugo’s reach.

„You know what? Fine.“ Kirishima laughed as he set the pan on the counter, far away from the blond.

„Come over and let’s eat. I just finished cooking dinner before you knocked on my door.“ He offered.

Bakugo looked at him skeptically. The last thing he needed that day was food poisoning.

But then he looked around. His kitchen was a mess and cooking in it would be hard. Not even to mention the fact, that he won’t be able to reach half of the utensils on his own. He really should have just ordered something...

Suddenly he felt really tired and the redhead didn’t seem to be a bad company. So he sighed and gave in.

„So what’s for the dinner?“

Kirishima smiled and just walked out of the kitchen. Walking through the living room, he stopped before the front door.

„Oh, and by the way, I can teach you how to work with that thermostat too.“ He pointed at the small white device on the wall next to the door. The blond pushed him out of the way so he could lock his door and walk back towards the other apartment.

„Wait here for a second.“ Kirishima stopped him before Bakugo could walk in, and disappeared inside his apartment. Bakugo could hear Kirishima whisper, or softly speak. Then some door slammed shut somewhere inside the apartment, and soon after, the front door opened again.

„Come on in.“ The redhead smiled and let him walk inside.

„So? Am I a good cook?“ Kirishima smirked as he started to clean the plates from the table. He started throwing them into the dishwasher, side-eyeing the blond behind the dinner table.

„Better than my ex.“ Bakugo laughed as he stood up to hand Kirishima his own plate, even tho Kirishima would go take it himself if he just waited a second. „Gotta admit you are good.“

„One meaningless point for me.“ Kirishima laughed as he took the plate from Bakugo’s hands.

Bakugo opened his mouth to say something about that, but the bark echoing from the other side of the apartment stopped him. He looked to the kitchen door, expecting a dog to appear there.

„That’s just Riot.“ The redhead explained. „She wants attention cause I locked her in my bedroom.“ Bakugo didn’t even need to ask why he did that, cause the question was visible in his expression.

„Not everyone likes dogs. And I didn’t want her to jump on you when you are... you know.“ He hesitated, pointing at Bakugo’s stomach while avoiding eye contact.

„I am pregnant. Not sick or dying.“ He rolled his eyes and leaned against the kitchen counter. „Let her out. I love dogs.“

„Fine, but don’t let her jump on you.“ Kirishima warned and disappeared into a doorway. Bakugo heard him unlock a door and speak to the dog for a while, before claws were scratching against the hardwood floor, running through the apartment.

In a doorway soon appeared a big samoyed. White, fluffy, and looking like it was smiling. It sat down in a doorway, leaned its head to the side and patiently waited for Bakugo to make the first move. Its owner appeared behind it in a doorway.

„And this is supposed to kill me?“ The blond smirked and outstretched his hand to the newcomer. The dog walked to him, sniffed his hand, and started licking it. Soon Riot moved closer, getting bolder, and started sniffing on Bakugo’s stomach as the blond started to scratch the dog behind its ears.

„You never know. She can get excited with new people and I really didn’t want her to hurt you.“ Kirishima crouched next to the dog and started to scratch Riot’s back. He looked up at the blond and smiled.

„She likes you.“

„At least someone.“ Bakugo mumbled under his breath, hoping that Kirishima didn’t hear him and that the wave of emotions that washed through his body wasn’t visible on his face. Fuck the pregnancy hormones...

„I bet many people like you. Why wouldn’t they?“ The redhead asked as he sat down on the floor. After two taps on Riot’s back, the dog sat down as well, still enjoying Bakugo’s fingers in its fur.

„My family abandoned me the moment I came out as trans. Mom of my only friend took me in and raised me, being a better mother than my own could ever be but... they moved to Europe three years ago. Ever since then, I was on my own. It was only me and...“

„Hey.“ Kirishima whispered and quickly stood up. He put his hands on Bakugo’s shoulders and the blond looked at him with glassy eyes. „Now you have me.“ The redhead smiled as he rubbed Bakugo’s upper arm slowly.

„Whatever you need. Whenever you need. I am right next door.“

„You don’t even know me. I could be a mass murderer.“ Bakugo smirked, the sadness slowly fading away. If he leaned into Kirishima’s warm hands a little more, no one would ever know. Except for Riot, who excitedly barked at them from the floor.

„She says you aren’t.“ Kirishima cocked his head towards his dog.

The room was filled with laughter soon after. Bakugo’s laughter. And Kirishima smiled at him, wondering what asshole could leave this behind.

„Hey, Bakugo?“ Kirishima shouted from Bakugo’s hall later that month. Kirishima was fixing the temperature in the blond’s apartment while the blond was lying on his couch, taping on a laptop.

„Hmm?“ The man on the couch didn’t look up.

„Where do you work? I never saw you leave the apartment except for when I am helping you with groceries. Or are you already on... well, parental leave?“ Kirishima clasped the protector glass on the thermostat close as he walked towards the blond and sat down next to him on the couch.

„I don’t have to leave for work. I am a songwriter.“

„No way! You sing? That’s so cool.“ Kirishima turned to him with wide eyes. The smaller man sighed and closed his laptop.

„I don’t perform the songs. I just write them. Both lyrics and music. Then I sell them.“

„That’s pretty risky work, isn’t it? It’s pretty inconsistent income.“

„Remember my so-called brother?“ Katsuki asked as he sat up properly. He wanted to put the laptop on his coffee table, but when he clumsily fall back against the back of the couch, he just showed it into Kirishima’s hands.

„Your friend who took you in when you were a teenager? Izuku, if I remember correctly?“ Kirishima grabbed the offered laptop and put it on the coffee table as Bakugo wanted. He then reached for the blanket behind him and put it over the blond.

„Yeah. Well, he owns multiple companies all over the world. That’s why he moved to Europe because most of his business companies are centered there. I am co-owner of a few of them.“

„Oh, that’s clever. You can do what you want and still have consistent income.“ Kirishima grabbed the TV remote and leaned against the couch next to Bakugo. This become their routine only after a few days of talking together, and Kirishima loved it. It was just so easy to exist together in one space.

„How about you? I figured you work shifts.“ The blond put his head on Kirishima’s shoulder as he stole the TV remote from him and started looking for something to watch.

„I am a paramedic.“

„That’s hard work.“ Bakugo replied when he settled for some cooking show and threw the remote somewhere on the couch. If only the deliciously looking food on the screen didn’t make him hungry.

„Yeah, it is. But I love it anyway.“ Kirishima smiled and looked down to meet Bakugo’s red eyes already staring at him.

„Keeping you around is a smart move then.“ Bakugo grinned and Kirishima laughed.

„If you talk about your pregnancy then please don’t even think about it.“

„Why? Never delivered a baby in an ambulance?“ Bakugo teased him and tried to sit up, as he couldn’t ignore the urge to eat anymore. Kirishima had to help him in the end, but they both pretended they didn’t notice that.

„Oh, I did. Twice. But both I and my colleague Mina were scared shitless.“ Kirishima laughed again as he leaned his head against the back of the couch staring at the ceiling. Bakugo’s steps faded slowly as he walked away.

„The worst part is, I can’t even show I am scared, cause we are supposed to be the ones who know how to help. And of course, we do, we trained for that. But we are only the last choice. It’s doctors' work to do that.“

„Why did you even decide to be a paramedic then?“ Bakugo shouted somewhere from the kitchen.

„To help people. And for that little bit of adrenaline in my life.“ Kirishima stood up as well and followed him into the kitchen. He leaned against the kitchen counter, watching Bakugo grab some food from the fridge. „Why did you become a songwriter?“

„To say the things I never could.“ The air in the room stayed tense. Kirishima watched as Bakugo started to eat whatever he chose from the fridge. One tear slowly rolled down the blond’s cheek and Kirishima smiled softly at that.

„You are so strong, you know that?“ He whispered as he stepped closer and wrapped one arm around Bakugo’s shoulders.

„Don’t you dare to pity me. I would never cry if...“

„...you weren’t pregnant. I know. Pregnancy hormones are a real pain in the ass.“ Kirishima laughed, rubbing Bakugo’s back. „ I remember when my mom was pregnant with my younger sister. That was hell.“

„How old is your sister?“ Bakugo asked as he unconsciously turned towards Kirishima, leaning into his side more.

„Turning seventeen this year. Twelve years difference between us. Mom had to be crazy to want the second kid so late, even tho she had me pretty young.“ Kirishima wrapped both of his hands around Bakugo without much care. It felt natural, even though this was the first time Bakugo let him hug him.

„Who knows, maybe she wasn’t planned at all. Like this one.“ Bakugo looked at his stomach and put his hands over it.

„Do you regret it?“ Kirishima whispered against blond hair as he leaned over Bakugo’s shoulder. He put his hands under Bakugo’s own on his stomach and gently lifted them. He remembered his father doing it to his mother when he was younger.

Bakugo groaned quietly, the pressure on his back from carrying the added weight disappearing for a while and he let his head fall onto Kirishima’s shoulder.

„I don’t regret being pregnant. Yeah, I didn’t plan it. Never thought about going through this, ever since I admitted to myself that I am no girl. But I don’t regret it. I only regret that I let that asshole be the one who did this to me.“

The hand under his stomach started to slowly disappear and he prepared for the dull ache in his back to come back. Before he could notice it, shock turned his attention somewhere else. Specifically on Kirishima’s next words.

„He’s no father. And never will be if he just run away and gave up so easily. But you are. And you will do an amazing job.“ Their eyes met and Bakugo smiled softly.

The beauty of the moment was destroyed when Kirishima’s watch started to vibrate, signaling his set alarm.

„I gotta get ready for work. See you tomorrow?“ Bakugo nodded behind the redhead, feeling oddly sad for some reason. He didn’t like to be alone anymore. And Kirishima noticed that. Cause he always did.

„Want me to bring Riot over?“ He smiled and happily watched as Bakugo’s eyes lightened, a soft smile appearing on his lips once again.

„This thing better get out of me before I lose my mind.“ Bakugo glared at his stomach when he once again leaned over the kitchen sink in Kirishima’s apartment. A sudden wave of nausea hit him from the strong smell of the meat that Kirishima was preparing.

„When are you due?“

„Next week.“ Bakugo sighed and took a deep breath. Kirishima watched him from the other side of the kitchen as he finally put the meat in the oven and closed it. He walked to the other man and gently started to rub his back.

„Are you getting scared?“ Kirishima teased with a smirk, expecting a sudden outburst that he usually got from the blond about being strong and without emotions, that he didn’t do scared. At least that’s how it has been the last three months they knew each other.

„Honestly?“ Bakugo said and straightened up from above the sink. Slowly he turned around and looked up at Kirishima who didn’t miss the fear in his eyes.

„I am terrified.“ He whispered.

„Come here.“ The redhead opened his arms and Bakugo didn’t hesitate. He eased himself into the offered embrace. His head fell on Kirishima’s shoulder and his arms wrapped around Kirishima’s waist. „What are you most scared of?“

„Everything? But... mostly that I’ll have to do everything on my own.“

„You know you don’t have to. I am here.“ As he felt Bakugo’s hands tighten around his waist, it gave Kirishima the courage he needed to do what he wanted. He lowered his head and pressed a soft kiss on top of the blond hair. „I am right next door, remember?“

„Would be easier if you were in one apartment with me.“

„Would you want us to be in one apartment?“

„Hmm.“ The blond hummed almost sleepily as he nuzzled his face closer to Kirishima’s neck. „As close as you would let me be.“

Kirishima smiled into the blond hair. „I like you too, you know. A lot more than I should probably.“ He could feel Bakugo’s smile against his skin. It was Bakugo’s own way of showing feelings that Kirishima already knew were there.

„And I mean it, Katsuki. Whatever, whenever you need. I am here for you.“

„If I wanted a kiss right now?“ Bakugo whispered and pulled himself away, letting their eyes meet.

Kirishima only smiled and cupped his cheek with one hand. Slowly he leaned down, giving Bakugo the last chance to back away but the blond didn’t. He lifted his chin, their faces only got closer as Kirishima smiled once again and pressed their lips together.

It was slow, sweet, and soft. Nothing of which he expected from Bakugo. The almost lazy kiss was exactly what he dreamed of tho.

Eijiro pulled away with a blissful smile, expecting to see some similar emotion on Katsuki’s face. But instead, the only thing visible in those eyes was fear.

„What’s wrong?“ The redhead immediately cupped his cheeks, searching for some hint. The blond’s breathing quickened, and his lower lip started to tremble. His hands gripped Kirishima’s shirt tighter.

„I think my water just broke.“

And Eijiro, the smug bastard he was, smiled.

„Keep calm, and breathe. You got this, I am here. We still have time, okay? I think Mina has a shift, I am calling an ambulance, we are going to the hospital.“

Eijiro could see the tears that Bakugo was trying to hold back, so he leaned down and kissed him once more.

„You got this.“ He whispered against chapped lips and Katsuki nodded with a hint of a smile.

There was a soft knock on the door of Katsuki’s hospital room. The door opened soon after and bright red hair appeared in the doorway.

„Hey.“ Kirishima smiled as he slipped inside the room and closed the door behind himself with a soft click.

Bakugo smiled back at him from the hospital bed. He looked tired but happy. He was smiling so freely.

„Say hi to Ichigo too.“ The blond nodded towards the crib where the beautiful baby girl was soundly sleeping. Kirishima walked over to the crib with a smile. Almost as if she could sense him, her eyes fluttered open. Beautiful deep red met Kirishima’s own red eyes.

„She has your eyes.“ Eijiro looked up from the baby to the man lying in bed.

„Thank god for that. With my ex being blond too, the eyes were the only thing I was worried about.“ The blond giggled, probably a little high on the painkillers he was at.

„So we will have the mini version of you running around soon.“ Eijiro sat at the edge of the bed and leaned down, kissing the blond’s forehead.

„We are gonna be the best dads, Eijiro.“ Katsuki giggled once more before he pulled the redhead into a kiss. When the words registered inside Kirishima’s brain, he pulled away slowly.

„We?“

„Or do you plan on leaving me too?“

„It’s not about me leaving, Katsuki. But... are you sure you want me to...be her dad? Be someone so important in her life? Shouldn’t I just be, I don’t know, the cool uncle who takes care of her?“ Eijiro started to comb through Katsuki’s blond hair.

He knew this was a conversation for later. When Katsuki isn’t high on pain meds, and when he isn’t drunk on endorphins that his body creates to deal with the pain. He knew this medically. He was a paramedic after all...

„I don’t want anyone else.“

...but those words were so nice. He wanted to believe them.

„Rest for now.“ He laughed and kissed the blond. „We have all the time in the world to figure it out.“

„I love you, and one day I am gonna marry you. There’s nothing that I need to figure out later.“ Katsuki whispered just as the exhaustion took over and he drifted off to sleep once more.

Kirishima was left there, grinning like an idiot with tears in his eyes. He would never guess this is where his life will go. But looking at the man lying next to him, and at the little girl sleeping on his other side, he knew that he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
