Work Text:

They hadn’t talked about this yet.

Somehow, in the span of the years they’ve been together, Spencer had never gotten a definitive answer from Morgan on this suddenly pressing question:

Did he want kids together?

He needed the answer soon, though, in some way or another, because he was staring down at a test with a little blue plus sign.

Spencer never brought up the topic before despite desperately yearning for a family. He was patient and thoroughly enjoyed his time with Derek. Their relationship was near perfect, almost soulmates if he believed in that sort of thing–and Derek made him want to–so he wasn’t rushing to bring up the ‘kids’ discussion.

But now… it was a little too late. Yesterday morning, he’d awoken feeling terribly nauseous. It seemed to go away, perhaps a passing bug, but the feeling returned in full force the next morning. And statistician as he was, he knew that wasn’t a coincidence.

He bought the pregnancy test that was now sitting on the bathroom counter showing a soft blue plus sign. And another with two tests. And five more, all showing the same thing, and that confirmed it. Statistically, that was too many tests for them to all be inaccurate.

He was pregnant.

Really, really pregnant. Past the tiny likelihood of doubt pregnant.

Spencer sucked in a breath, held it for as long as he could, and exhaled again. Pregnant.

He sucked in another, and another, and another until he was hyperventilating and his hands were shaking and his vision was blurring.

“Spence? Baby boy, you okay?”

Now he didn’t even have time to think about how to tell his boyfriend.

He didn’t answer.

“Spencer?”

Anxious, scared scent was wafting through the bedroom and Derek followed it all the way from downstairs. In the ensuite bathroom, the scene was pouring out, nearly choking it, and his Alpha instincts were kicking into overdrive with the sudden desire to protect his boyfriend from any harm. He wanted to squish him in his arms and never let him go. Tell him everything was going to be alright.

“I know you’re nervous in there.” He tried to keep his voice neutral, calm, and civilized, but something was obviously wrong and Spencer wasn’t answering.

Spencer opened the door, standing there with his lips pressed tightly together. Derek scanned the room with a profiler’s eye but didn’t see anything.

“D-Don’t be mad, Der.”

Didn’t see anything. Until he looked down and saw the little white stick in Spencer’s hand. And six on the counter behind him.

“Wait– are you–?” A massive grin spread across Derek’s face. “Babe, are you pregnant?”

“Derek, I had no idea, I swear, I’m sorry–”

“I’m gonna be a dad?”

“Statistically, there’s a 99.9999% chance that–”

“Oh, my GOD! WE’RE HAVING A BABY! I’M GONNA BE A FATHER!” Derek was so completely overjoyed he grabbed Spencer in a hug and spun him around again and again while shouting how happy he was.

“I– we never talked about this, I wasn’t sure if–”

“Are you happy? You also want this?” Derek paused, concerned. He hadn’t considered the possibility that Spencer might not be overjoyed like he was, but he would respect whatever his feelings were. Completely.

“No, I– yes.” Spencer smiled small, looking at the tiled floor and blushing. “I’m happy, too. Really, really happy, but I didn’t know if you wanted–”

“I want this,” Derek cut him off with a huge smile. “I want this more than anything. We’re having a baby!” He crushed Spencer in another hug. “Anything you want for this, babe, you’ve got it, if you want to take off work now, or not, or you want me to just work for a while, and after you have it–her–him–the baby–”

He was getting ahead of himself but it was endearing to watch.

Until another thought dawned on Spencer.

“How are we going to tell the team?”

. . .

“Spencer, it’s time. We can’t wait any longer,” Morgan said, coming up behind him in the mirror and wrapping his arms around his waist. He rested a hand on the little bump that was forming, their beautiful little pup starting to grow. The team was bound to start putting the pieces together the bigger he got.

At four months, Spencer wasn’t fitting right into all of his clothes anymore. His layers and layers of dress shirts and vests and blazers and sweaters would hide more than most, but as thin as he was, it would become obvious sooner or later.

“I’m scared,” Spencer murmured. “They don’t even know we’re together. How am I going to break it to JJ that we’ve been dating, all this time, four years? She’s going to feel so betrayed. And not only that, but now I'm pregnant.”

“She’ll understand. They all will. They’re our family. They’re going to be happy for us, baby. I know it. Don’t worry.” Derek leaned in and kissed a trail down Spencer’s neck, resting on the bonding mark he left there years ago when they decided this was forever. “I’m here for you.”

“But the rules, what if Hotch reports it–”

“Hotch would never do that. And the rules are antiquated. You do know Rossi is sleeping with Strauss, don’t you?”

Spencer gasped. He wasn't usually privy to gossip within the Bureau, but he really hadn’t seen that one coming.

“And if worse came to worse, I would switch departments. Maybe even take a desk job so I could be home for the baby,” Derek said thoughtfully.

“You’d do that?” Spencer whispered. “For me?”

“Of course, baby boy. You know I would do anything for you.”

“I’m going to wear the stretchy pants,” Spencer said, making his decision. He lifted his chin and looked at his bump in the mirror with his amazing Alpha behind him. He could do this. Everything would turn out fine.

. . .

“Hey, everyone?” Morgan asked as soon as they boarded the jet. “Before we start the profile, Reid and I have something we'd like to share.”

Hotch raised an eyebrow but kept silent in anticipation of the news. Rossi hummed thoughtfully, asking, “Are you two finally getting together?”

“Not yet, guys, I’ve got fifty bucks riding on next year,” Prentiss grinned.

Spencer blushed hard.

“N-No, that’s not it,” Spencer stuttered. “Well, it is, sort of, but not everything.”

“Oh?” Hotch looked up from his paperwork. Everyone else waited in silent anticipation, eyes wide. Clearly, they hadn’t expected that to be his serious answer.

“Um, well, you see, statistically, um…”

Derek was grinning ear to ear and about to burst like a balloon with pent-up excitement.

“D-Der?” Spencer turned and whispered softly into his ear.

Derek looked over and asked for silent permission, Spencer nodding with relief before he just about broke everyone’s eardrums, “We’re having a baby!”

Rossi and JJ gasped “What–”

“Spencer’s PREGNANT!” Morgan was grinning as he shouted it out. Everyone’s jaws dropped and Spencer hunched over in his seat, red to the tips of his ears.

“You–wow,” Hotch was speechless.

“I– are you, were you–” JJ faltered. “I didn’t even know–wait, are you two together?”

Spencer was still blushing and nervous but he nodded at her. “Yes, four years, three months, and eighteen days.”

“Oh my god,” Prentiss paled. Spencer’s heart sped up at her look of horror. “That means Anderson won the bet.”

“Oh, Spence, I’m so happy for you,” JJ said, pulling him into a hug.

“Thanks, Jayje,” he smiled.

Hotch narrowed his eyes. “You’ve been in the field, pregnant, haven’t you?”

Spencer looked sheepish.

“How does Morgan feel about that?” Hotch’s stare was intimidating as always, but there was a softness behind it.

“He can handle his own,” Derek said defensively. “He’s been careful.”

“I have.” Spencer nodded. “But… I’m starting to show, and I think it’s time I slow down a bit. I still want to work on my geographical profiles for now, but maybe no more unsub takedowns.”

“I agree.” Hotch nodded.

Sure enough, when the team looked down at Spencer’s belly, the tell-tale sign of his little baby bump was visible under his sweater vest.

“Congratulations, Spence,” Prentiss finally pushed past Derek and JJ to pull him into a light hug. “This whole time we thought those sugary coffees were starting to catch up to you.”

“Hey, I haven’t had coffee in months!” he retorted ruefully. That had been hard to give up.

“And I’m so proud of you, baby,” Morgan said softly. He reached over and took Spencer’s hand in front of the team for the first time and squeezed.

“Should we start the briefing, then?” Hotch finally spoke up when a small smile crossed his lips. “And congratulations, you two.”

. . .

Morgan was accustomed to waking up in the middle of the night now. He and Spencer both were.

But this time, when he woke, it wasn’t because their baby was crying. No, she was sleeping soundly, nestled in between them in their bed because Spencer couldn’t bear to have her in her crib.

This time, it was his phone on the nightstand.

“Morgan,” he answered, yawning. He played with the little curl on Spencer’s cheek while Hotch explained details over the phone.

“Yeah, I’ll be there.”

He pressed a kiss to his baby’s forehead and then to Spencer’s lips before getting out of bed as quietly as he could and getting dressed.

“Case?” Spencer mumbled.

Morgan looked over, expecting to see Spencer still asleep. Instead, he had moved, holding their daughter protectively on his chest as she slept.

“Yeah. Be back soon, though.”

Spencer nodded in understanding, barely visible in the dark of the early morning. “I love you.”

Morgan walked back over to the side of the bed. Spencer held their baby up to him and Morgan took her in his arms, cradling her. Her little eyes fluttered open and he smiled at her.

“I’ll be back soon, baby girl,” he said quietly, “your daddy here will take good care of you and love you until I get back.” He pressed another kiss to her little head and she cooed at him.

“I hate having to leave her even for a minute,” Derek sighed. “And you, baby.”

He gave Spencer another kiss before leaving reluctantly.

“How’s Spencer and the baby?” Hotch asked the second Morgan entered the office. “I hate to take you away from them.”

Morgan shrugged. “Spencer will be back from leave in a couple of months.”

“He can take all the time he needs.”

Morgan smiled and laughed. “I know. You try telling him that, though.”

Hotch gave one of his wry smiles. “He has the rest of his life for work. She’ll only be little for so long.”

“Yeah,” he sighed. “Let’s do this, then. The sooner I can get back to them the better.”

Hotch chuckled and nodded. "Wheels up in thirty.”
