Here, together (there's another light coming)

Summary:

“Sasha met someone,” said Ulla.

“Like met met?” asked Luda.

Notes:

Inspired by "Shipwrecks" by The Sweeplings. I've been wanting to write Luda/Ulla for a bit, and it fit perfectly in this AU.

Thank you to Silberias for betaing!

Moodboard by me.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

“Tell me something good,” Luda murmured against Ulla's shoulder.

Ulla kissed the top of her head and continued to undo the braid her wife wore for work. Luda’s wavy brown hair flowed down over teal surgeon’s scrubs. In lighter moments she would mock-complain that the scrubs clashed with her eyes, but Ulla thought she was stunning no matter what she was (or wasn’t) wearing.

She knew it had been a bad day from the way Luda had barely said “Hello” when she walked in, and from the way her hand still fiddled with her University of Maryland Trauma Center ID badge instead of dropping it in the bowl by the door.

“Sasha met someone,” said Ulla.

“Like met met?” asked Luda, leaning back to look at her.

“Very much so,” said Ulla. “Her name is Alina — he met her at that conference he went to last month. She works at Johns Hopkins, on spacecraft. You should see the way his face lights up when he talks about her. He sounds like she created the sun, not just studies it.”

“I want to meet her,” said Luda.

“I figured,” said Ulla. Luda had been best friends with her brother since high school. They had even gone to senior prom together, before she had felt comfortable coming out. “Sasha said they're both free next week.”

“That should work — I won't be on call Thursday and Friday,” said Luda. She looked down at her hand, then went to put her badge away.

“I'll let him know.” Ulla gently pulled her over to the couch when she returned. “Do you want to hear what I've been researching? About beluga sounds?”

“Yes,” said Luda softly. She rested her head on Ulla's shoulder with a sigh like a swimmer who had found the shore at last.

Notes:

Belugas are very vocal and are sometimes called "sea canaries."

The title is adapted from "Shipwrecks".
