Chapter 1: The Doctor

Chapter Text

Ira was insure to what was happening, but he knew it wasn’t good.

Rikka and her mom had been talking for several minutes in hushed whispers, whispers that had stopped when he had approached. He had been suspicious then, yet for a reason beyond his comprehension, he still got in the car with Hishikawasan when she had asked.

That was a bad idea. “So, where are we going?” He asked politely, trying to stay on the woman's good side, if he ever hoped to date her daughter. “You’ll find out when we get there” responded the woman calmly, not giving any indication of her plans.

Ira was annoyed now, he didn’t like secrets, especially if they involved him. “Is it gonna be a long drive then? I’m bored.” Attempt two at information gathering, Ira had a basic understanding of the area, so maybe he could figure it out. “I’m sorry about that, it was a bit of a drive, but we’re really close, next building, see?” Hishikawa san pointed to a large building to the right, turning into the parking lot.

A hospital. He could figure out what was happening now, he was getting a check-up. Now it wasn’t like he hadn’t ever had one, the other Selfish would occasionally check him over, making sure he had no serious injuries, but he dealt with himself for the most part.

“Why do I need one? I feel fine.” Hishikawa san’s sigh was one of disappointment. “Well, you might feel fine but something could be wrong, also it’s a general report on what has changed over the past year.” Her voice was delicate as she explained, though there was concern in her eyes as she walked him through the doors.

Ira waited while Hishikawa san check in, and obediently followed her to a small room. It was a pretty standard room from the pictures he had seen. They waited in there for a bit, Hishikawa san sitting down and Ira looking around the room, reading posters and such.

“Hello, you must be the Hiskikawas. I’m Dr Kanchi” The man's sudden appearance startled Ira, causing him to spin around and float up a bit, “Well, if you’re here about the fact that he flys, I’m sorry but there's not much I can do.” The man said gently, laughing with Hishikawa san. “No, just a regular checkup, although he is a new patient, so he doesn’t have a record.” “No record whatsoever?” “No, I’m sorry. You’ll have to ask him for information.”

As the adults kept talking Ira sank back down to the ground, grumbling about dumb adults, never knocking. Then Hishikawa san walked out the door. “Hey! Where are you going?!?” The woman's head pops back, “I’m going to fill out your paperwork. You’ll be fine by yourself, you’re not a little kid.” Her response was quick, so was her escape, Ira never got a word in.

“Well then, let's get started. So Ira,” started the man, sitting down in his chair motioning for Ira to sit on the bed. “Have you ever been to the doctor for anything, shots, medicine, injury?” Dr Kanchi looked at Ira expectantly, hoping to piece this kid together. “Some big things have happened, but I’ve never been brought to a doctor, Mar- the people I lived with dealt with it.” He quickly amended the end of his statement. “Like what exactly?” Kanchi was a tad worried about the person Ira avoided mentioning, but Ryouko said his past was complicated. “Well um, so like, I never went to a doctor so I don’t like, know but I think it was pneumonia? And maybe strep throat at some point… something like that.” “Okay,” nothing he had just said was too bad, pneumonia wasn’t great, especially untreated, but he seemed fine. “So no shots?”

“No” At this point Ira was getting annoyed with this line of questioning. Realizing that he wasn’t gonna get more from the kid, he switched to something else. “Well, in that case, I think it would be best to do a full workup with you, blood draws and different scans. That sound good?” “Sure” Ira shrugged, seeming rather indifferent to the idea. “Well, I can’t draw blood for large tests so you’ll have to see a specialist, for now we can do a normal checkup.”

Kanchi led Ira outside to a scale and wall measure near the end of the hallway. There they were met by Hishikawa san, having finished the mountain of paperwork she had been given. “Hey Ira, how was it?” questions Hishikawa san from her chair, leaning forward to talk to him, “Fine, he asks too many questions.” Ira replies simply with a shrug.

“Take your shoes off and come over here Ira, we’re gonna take your height and weight.” “Why?” Ira’s question was real, judging from the look in his eyes. “Well- um, ask Ryouko when you get home, ok?” Kanchi knew the answer of course, but didn’t feel like explaining it. Glancing briefly at Hishikawa san, he obliged, weighing in at 62 pounds and 4ft 4in. “Ok, even though he is small for his age he’s still underweight, though it’s not too worrying. And in the paperwork you said he was 12?” Kanchi was quickly going through the information Ryouko provided on a tablet, there wasn’t much, but it had enough for basic stuff. “Yes, right about there, though I don’t know his birthday.” “That's fine, we can just set it as a generic date for future reference.”

“August 31st” Ira spat out from the chair he was curled up in, glaring at the floor. “Ok, that’s nice, do you want to celebrate it?” Her offer is calm, tone level, him screaming “NO” was not a logical reaction, but he did it anyway. Her tone was still level when she told him off, it was strange.

“Let's go back to the room, shall we? I can finish up my examination.” Breaking the tension Ira had made with his outburst. Leading them back into the room Ira was back on the table as Dr Kanchi grabbed his little light scope to peer into Ira’s eyes and ears. “It’s too bright,” Ira said after he finished. “I’m sorry about that. Can you stand on the ground now? I’ll check your heart rate and lungs.” Having Ira lean forward and breathe, he finished that part of the exam rather quickly, they were able to get through everything without any more hiccups.

“So Ira, do you remember that blood test I mentioned earlier? It’s just for basic viruses so we’ll do that here. Well I’m just gonna prick your finger, here, aaannnddd, squeeze it a bit,” he explains as he draws blood from Ira’s index finder, “and then that's it! We’ll wait until your blood tests come back to give you your shots and do a more thorough workup, but until then you’re good.” He has a beaming smile that makes Ira a bit too anxious to answer, but he nods.

Following Hishikawa san and grabbing a candy, they leave and head back to the car, Ira is quiet for the most part, seeming a bit tired from the whole thing. As they’re driving back Ira asks what has been on his mind recently, “Why did I have to take my shoes off?” His question is a bit startelling, especially since she thought he was asleep. “Well the soles of the shoes will affect your height and they are the most weighty part of your clothes, Ira so you take them off so the doctor can get proper measurements.” he didn’t respond to this, jus kinda stared out the window for a bit, “Okay.” he responded quietly, before drifting off to sleep.

As much of a nuisance he was, he was rather cute, more like a little kid than a pre-teen. “Ahhh, well, 62 pounds. I can carry that into the house.” he said to herself with a small smile.
