Remus Lupin's guide to baking cookies and getting a boyfriend

Summary:

“I will have you know that this is a delicate craft, not to be taken on by amateur bakers.” Remus headed toward the small table where the tray lay and started scooping jam into the center of each biscuit.
“Amateur? Do these perfectly cut works of art strike you as a work of an amateur?” He leaned in to indicate his craftsmanship.
“Oh please, everyone knows that the rolling of the dough is the key to that.” Remus rolled his eyes and kept scooping jam.
Sirius headed over to grab another spoon and before coming over to help, he scooped some flour with his finger. He went over to the other side of the table, across from Remus and before putting his spoon in the jar, he smeared the flour all over Moony’s nose.

Work Text:

“Are you leaving?” Remus called from his room, hearing the door to Lily’s room open.

“Good morning to you too,” she called going to the kitchen.

“I’m sorry I may be a tad stressed.” Remus walked out of his room and stood near the sofa. Their flat was comprised by two bedrooms, a small sitting area with a kitchen and a tiny bathroom. Lily had found it for them in their first year of uni since neither of them wanted to opt for the dormitories.

“I am working on a project with James,” Lily sighed looking at her phone.

“He is really taking the chemistry module?” Remus walked over to the sink and filled himself a glass of water, “I thought he was joking.”

“So did I, but he texted me the other day about it.” She bent down to put on her boots, her hair falling in front of her face.

“Lil, he is definitely going to fail.”

“I know, the bloody idiot.” She stood up and turned to get her coat from the hanger next to the door, “Agh, I told him ages ago I would go out for coffee with him only if we were to do a group project.”

“Gosh, the idiot really remembered that.” Remus chocked on his water with laughter.

“Oh, he did and now I feel bad, so I have to help him out.” Lily pulled the hair stuck in her coat and brushed it hastily with her fingers. Remus reached over to hand her the scarf laying on the sofa.

“That is actually really sweet in a weird way.”

Lily stopped and glared at him, “I guess,” she said after a second. She hesitated and reached for her back, propped against the kitchen cabinet next to the door.

“Good luck.” Remus called as she opened the door.

“Have fun on your date Moony,” she smiled.

Remus was hit by a wave of anxiety as soon as the door closed. He had met Sirius through Marlene, who went to school with him and Lily. Marlene had met Sirius in class and introduced him and his roommate James a few months prior at her birthday party.

Looking back at that night, Remus was not sure how exactly they had started talking but as Lily had informed him, they had spent the whole night together talking at a corner. Remus was not very good at social events, let alone such events with a lot of new people. As soon as he had entered Marlene’s dorm room, he located the nearest sofa in the corner and as he was heading that way, Sirius beat him to it. Their eyes had met, and Remus knew it would have been immensely awkward to walk away being clearly obvious he was heading to the sofa himself.

Ever since that night they had slowly gotten to know each other, hanging out here and there, it had seemed effortless to Remus, not too much thought as to their meet ups. Everything changed when he offered to make cookies for Sirius a few days prior and he had proposed to make them together.

Great it’s a date.

The text message was still burning a hole in his mind. He had had a crush on Sirius since that very first night on the couch, him sitting on the sofa, all back clothes, smudged eyeliner, and silver rings. A guy like him, would never fall for a guy like Remus was his first thought and had seen him as a friend ever since. It wasn’t until Lily started yelling at him about dismissing all signs that Sirius in fact liked him back that made him overthink every message he had ever sent.

Going into his bedroom, Remus debated on whether to change his sweater for another one but after much contemplation decided to keep the cream and black patterned one he had already on. He went into the bathroom and ran his hands through his curly brown hair in an attempt to make it less tangled. There was a knock on the door right when he was about to give up and his heart started hammering in his chest once more.

Remus walked over to the door and stopped with his hand on the handle, taking a steadying breath he pushed the handle down.

“Moony!” Sirius slammed into him making Remus take a step back. He pulled back and smiled, “I brought the jam you asked for.” He fished out a strawberry jam jar out of his tote bag and held it in front of Remus’s face.

“Thanks,” Moony smirked and took the jar placing it quickly on the nearby kitchen counter. He leaned against the kitchen counter and watched as Sirius took off his boots and padded black denim jacket. Sirius tossed his hair back and put his hands in the hoodie pocket looking around the kitchen-sitting area.

“I like the plants,” he gestured towards the flowerpots on either side of the sofa and the ones on the windowsill behind it.

“It’s mostly Lily, I can’t even keep a succulent alive,” Remus said, feeling the waves of anxiety settling in.

“Hm, why don’t I believe that.” Sirius looked at the plants more carefully.

“Should we get started on the cookies?” Remus asked slowly heading towards the kitchen counter, “I already took it upon myself to make the dough, so it should be nice and cold by now.”

Sirius turned and smiled at him, “Always one step ahead.”

Remus took out the carefully wrapped dough from the refrigerator and tossed it to Sirius, “You can open that while I get out the flour.” He reached into a cupboard and took out a big white jar, set it on the kitchen counter and sprinkled some on its surface. The kitchen was rather small so there was not that much space for rolling out the dough, which meant they would have to do it in small batches.

“You can toss that over here,” Remus gestured towards the lightly floured surface.

“As you wish chef,” Sirius winked and dunked the dough on the kitchen counter, forming a small cloud of flour dust. He waved his hand to rid the air of the flour particles and his shoulder bumped into Moony’s. The other boy looked at him with a small smile and held out a rolling pin.

“Want to do the honors?”

“You roll, and I’ll cut them.”

So they did, Remus divided the dough into smaller bolls and rolled them one by one, Sirius cutting out small circles with a round cookie cutter, tossing the ready ones into a lined tray.

“I think that should be all,” Remus began to turn when he was met by Sirius, his face closer than he expected it to be.

“What about the jam?” He asked softly, aware that the distance between them was only mere centimeters.

“Oh, right.” Remus shook his head and stepped back to grab the jam. While he was rustling around in a jar for a spoon, Sirius had scooped some of the flour and as Remus turned spoon and jar in hand, he tossed the flour at his face.

“What was that for?” Moony laughed, choking on the flour.

“For staring the biscuit making without me obviously.” Sirius folded his arms.

“Did not,” Remus whined and scooped some flour and tossed it at Sirius, his black hoodie and hair getting a fine coat of flour dust.

“Yes you did, the dough was ready when I got here and that is clearly the best part of making biscuits.” He tried to dust of his hoodie with no luck.

“I will have you know that this is a delicate craft, not to be taken on my amateur bakers.” Remus headed toward the small table where the tray lay and started scooping jam into the center of each biscuit.

“Amateur? Do these perfectly cut works of art strike you as a work of an amateur?” He leaned in to indicate his craftsmanship.

“Oh please, everyone knows that the rolling of the dough is the key to that.” Remus rolled his eyes and kept scooping jam.

Sirius headed over to grab another spoon and before coming over to help, he scooped some floor with his finger. He went over to the other side of the table, across from Remus and before putting his spoon in the jar, he smeared the floor all over Moony’s nose.

“I guess I deserved that.” Moony said wiping the flour with the sleeve of his sweater, “Don’t think about doing that with the jam, I like this sweater and don’t want it ruined by strawberry stains.”

“Wasn’t thinking about it, but now that you mention it…” Sirius smirked, lifted his head form looking at the tray to see Remus glaring at him, “You truly are the one step ahead, always thinking of a bigger mischief.”

“That is I, Remus Lupin, marauder number one.” He waved his spoon in the air.

“That you are.”

They were sitting on the couch waiting for the cookies to bake with a record playing in the background when Moony’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He took it out to only find an advertisement email and tossed it on the coffee table in front.

“You really got me good with that flour, it is all stuck in my hair.” Sirius was frantically trying to get it out, “Did you put dough in it as well?”

“Oh, please don’t be so dramatic. Let me see.” He turned around to face Sirius and started carefully picking out the small dough parts out of his hair, “Huh, there really are dough parts.”

“See! I was not making it up.”

“Stop moving. I can’t get it out with you fussing about.”

Sirius pulled away from Remus’s hands and lied his head on his lap, “There,” he smiled.

Remus didn’t know what to do all of a sudden. His heart began to beat faster once more, everything seemed to be going perfectly fine but leave it to Sirius to do something that would send him into a panic. Sirius took one of his hands, noticing he was getting anxious and started playing with his fingers. That made all the thoughts in Moony’s head stop and he could focus on being there, in the moment, with Sirius so close to him, being grounded by him. He smiled and started picking out the dough bits with his free hand.

“Am I making you anxious?” Sirius asked after a few minutes.

“Ahm, yes but not in a bad way,” Remus answered, his hand was now mindlessly brushing Sirius’s hair.

“What can I do so I don’t make you anxious?”

Remus smirked, “I don’t think that is possible, I never know what you are going to do next.”

“So I am the one who is one step ahead,” Sirius smiled back.

“I guess you have your moments.” The timer on the oven interrupted them with a loud ding, making both of their heads turn in its direction.

“I am guessing these are not all of your books.” Sirius said looking at Moony’s bookcase.

“No, most of them are back home,’ Remus smiled setting a plate of cookies on his desk.

Sirius was looking around in his room, from the bookcase to the cluttered desk next to it, the cluttered shelves with records and his neatly made bed in the corner. Moony was standing next to the window beside the desk, the light making his hair a soft golden brown.

“Your room is so…” Sirius searched for a word, “well you.” He smiled.

“Ahm, thank you?” Remus rubbed his elbow with his other hand, “Sirius Black at a loss of words at my messy room, need to remember that.”

“Don’t tell my mother, all those tutoring lessons she made me go to…” Sirius laughed, “Actually do tell her, I would enjoy the sight.” He headed over towards the window and spotted a small jar placed next to some plants on the windowsill. “Is that makeup?”

“Oh, amm, well yes it is.” Remus rubbed the back of his neck; he felt his cheeks turning red. In his defense, he had forgotten that the jar with eyeliners was still sitting there.

“You always surprise me Moony,” Sirius fished out a black eyeliner from the jar, “I want to see how it looks.”

“Oh, I don’t really use it, I got it for a hallowing thing Lily made me go to and she put it on for me.” Remus went over to the jar and looked around at the different colored liners and some pencils that war still in there.

“Can I put it on for you?” Sirius turned to face him.

Remus thought for a second, he really wanted Sirius to touch his face, but he also didn’t want that. His head was being swarmed by all of his overwhelming thoughts once more. He took a deep breath and was not ever aware that the words were coming out of his mouth, “Yes, why not.”

Sirius grinned, he looked at the chair next to him, but there was a pile of sweaters on it. He quickly went and sat at the edge of Moony’s bed dragging him alongside him.

“Hold still, I am an expert at this.” He winked drawing Moony’s attention towards his own perfect eyeliner. As soon as Sirius touched his face Moony started laughing, “What are you doing, I told you to stay still.”

“It’s tingling.” Moony laughed.

“Oh god, stop laughing.” Sirius said, trying to hold his own laughter. And without thinking too much, he pushed Remus on the bed and crawled on top of him, eye liner still in hand.

Remus could feel the tips of Sirius’s hair on his face, his breath stroking his cheek. Everything happened so fast that his heart seemed to have forgotten that this should be one of those moments to start beating immensely hard. Instead, he was still smiling, looking at Sirius’s grey eyes.

Sirius couldn’t help but keep smiling when looking at Remus, “Perfect now I can finally do it.” He started lowering his hand and right before it touched Moony’s eyelid he stopped and kissed him instead.

Remus saw it coming, more like he wanted it to happen. Their lips brushed slightly, and Sirius pulled back, “Is this okey?”

Remus propped himself on his elbows and met Sirius’s lips once more. Once he pulled back, he smiled, “Do you like me as more than a friend?”

“Moony are you joking?” Sirius let out a breathy laugh.

The other boy’s smile faded ever so slightly.

“I have liked you ever since you sat on that couch all those months ago.” He said softly.

Remus smiled and kissed him once more.

“Moony, you are so smart, but I swear you can be extremely oblivious.” Sirius smiled and leaned in for another kiss.
