Chapter Text

Peter Wimsey (mediaevalist)

Lord Peter Death Bredon Wimsey FBA (/[wˈɪmsi]/; born October 13th 1980[1]) is a British mediaeval historian[2] and aristocrat. He is a professor of Mediaeval Studies at University College London[3] and has worked as a consultant for the BBC’s documentary department[4]. His brother is Sir Gerald Wimsey, 18th Duke of Denver.

Early Life

Wimsey was born on the 13th of October 1980 at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London[5]. He is the second surviving child of Mortimer Gerald Wimsey, 17th Duke of Denver, and Honoria Lucasta Delagardie, author and diarist.

He attended Temple Grove Preparatory School and then Eton College before taking a degree in History at Balliol College, Oxford. Wimsey has been quoted as believing his own early life to have been an example of “class privilege to the point of parody”[6].

Career in Academia

Wimsey earned First Class honours on his graduation, after which he worked for the government in an undisclosed role until his return to academia in 2013. Prior to taking his position at University College London, Wimsey worked as a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford.

His work as an academic has focused on the history of printing, especially the production and distribution of incunabala. He has stated on multiple[7] occasions[8] that his primary reason for remaining in academia was to maintain access to the rarer items in the university’s collection.

Wimsey’s first work of popular non-fiction will be published in late 2023[9].

Career as a detective

During the 2015 investigation into the theft of the Attenbury Emeralds, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement thanking Wimsey for his contribution to the eventual arrest of Lady Julia Derby.

Although Wimsey has been reluctant to publicly discuss his work as a private detective, several journalists including Salcombe Hardy have published accounts of his contributions to notable investigations including the Whittaker Inheritance Murders, the Galloway Artist’s Feud, and even the trial of his own brother Gerald Wimsey for the murder of Denis Cathcart.

Personal Life

Wimsey is unmarried and lives in Central London. While a guest on the BBC podcast ‘You’re Dead to Me’ he stated that he has ‘a housemate’[10] but declined to describe them in detail. He is politically left-leaning[11] and has spoken in favour of the abolition of the House of Lords.

His sister Mary Wimsey, social campaigner and high-profile member of the British Communist Party, is married to a police inspector who Wimsey has claimed was ‘his best friend first’[12].

#RobertTempleton returns next year in A Turn Of The Mill, a brand new murder-mystery in the bestselling series. Order now from your favourite bookseller: tinyurl.com/3j4j5hs

A poorly made digital book cover for Harriet's new book. It features her name, a pull quote by Ruth Rendell, and a terribly balanced photo of a windmill

Phillip Boyes (novelist)

Phillip Arthur Boyes (/[bɔɪz]/, born January 25th 1986[1]) is a British novelist. In 2009 his debut novel, The Sighing of Eternity, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize[2]. His work primarily focuses on the decline of masculinity and the fading of traditional relationship structures in the modern world[citation needed].

Early Life

Boyes was born in Warsop, Nottinghamshire on January 25th 1986, the son of Arthur Boyes and Julia Brown[3]. His father is a Church of England clergyman in the parish of Warsop[4]. Boyes’ education prior to university is unknown; he completed a degree in English Literature at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, graduating with second class honours [citation needed].

Career

Boyes contributed regularly to the college magazine Once A Caian… during his time at university[5]. After graduating he continued to write short stories and articles for special interest magazines before completing his first novel. His first published professional work was the story ‘And How May I Count The Stars’, which received the 2008 Hugo Award for best novelette[6]. This would be Boyes’ first and last entry into speculative fiction, claiming that the genre was ‘beneath his talents’[7].

In 2009, Boyes’ novel The Sighing of Eternity was published by Harper Collins. It was well received and nominated for a number of awards, including the Man Booker Prize[8]. A film adaptation has been in development since 2010 when film rights were sold to New Line Cinema. His follow up novel Longing (2011) is a bildungsroman in the style of Jack London. Critical reception was mixed[9] with some praising Boyes’ lyrical style while others dismissed the work as overwritten and overwrought[10].

Following the commercial failure of his next two books, Boyes took a sabbatical from longform writing, publishing a short story collection before the announcement of his upcoming novel Near and Far, to be released in the spring of 2023. His agent for this new work is his cousin Norman Urquhart.

Personal Life

Boyes was in a relationship with fellow novelist Harriet Vane from 2010 to 2015. The couple separated due to ‘differences of opinion’[11]. During this time Boyes gave an interview to The Times in which he stated that he ‘doesn’t believe in marriage.’[12] In 2016, Boyes became engaged to Hannah Westlock, a primary school teacher. Boyes announced their separation on Instagram in October 2019[13].
