Summary
“Well, I did it, Greg. I finally did it.”
“What did you do?”
“I pushed my wife down the stairs," Tom said. So simply and so matter factly. Saying it made it right. Saying it made it true.
Greg understood the meaning then. The metaphorical blood on their hands. The fact that there was no soul anymore. That they were both hollow and that the decision was mutual. That he did not want to turn back at all. There was silence between them, with the distant noise of the city beneath them still not loud enough. The clarity of knowing, like the look in Tom's eyes.
Greg put down his wine glass and crossed the empty space between them. And kissed him.
Greg would never have thought that this was what lies tasted, like cold red wine and Tom’s shaking moans.
