Everything is Normal

Summary:

Alex would have loved a normal life. He thinks he ought to have had one, but no. Fate (or rather, the faceless thing watching him from outside his window) had other ideas.

This time, though, he tells someone about it. As a result, everything changes.

Notes:

I had this idea at school, I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it but I'm definitely going to try

Chapter 1: Always Watching - Prologue

Summary:

Alex sees something watching him from the trees, and appropriately gets scared by it

Chapter Text

Something was watching him. Alex was frozen, leaning back on his desk chair and staring out the window.

Glancing around the room, or even out of his window to the woods outside, wasn’t uncommon for Alex to do, especially since it tore his eyes away from the perpetual cycle of script writing and editing. What was uncommon, however, was to meet the gaze of someone staring at him from outside.

Even this, though, could not compare to the pure horror he felt in this moment.

Just inside the line of trees, stood a figure. He had paused for just a second to ensure it wasn’t his mind, the dim lighting and the late hour playing tricks on him.

It had no eyes. All that was visible that first time was the blank canvas where a face should be. The sight of it made his breath catch in his throat, and his blood turn to ice. The room had become colder, and gave him goosebumps, despite it being the middle of summer with the AC off.

It had no eyes. And yet, he knew it was watching him. How long had it been there? Just standing, motionless, observing him... What did it want? Alex was filled with a sense of terrified dread as he continued to stare.

He felt the mounting pressure of a headache forming just behind his eyes, and he remembered to exhale. It didn’t help remove the tightness in his chest, nor did standing up to move closer to the window. If anything, that just made it worse.

It was still there. Standing at the window, he could see it a bit clearer. A pale spot in the trees, and a closer look revealed the body of the creature. It was slim and appeared to be wearing a fucking suit of all things.

A noise came from just behind him, and in the first action that he had felt in control of, he swivelled around to see Rocky barking at the window from across the room. So, he could feel its presence too.

He turned back to the window, only to see that it was gone. The aura that had seemed to encapsulate the room dissipated as soon as it had appeared, and left him feeling tense all over. Rocky was still barking, though for just a moment, Alex couldn’t force his body to move and comfort the dog.

Still staring out the window, he took a step backwards and almost tripped on his desk chair, instead catching himself on the arms and slowly lowering himself until he was sat down again. He tore his eyes away from the window to power his laptop down, thoughts racing.

He quietened them with the same logic he had used earlier: that this was just his imagination. He had stayed up too late again, and was starting to hallucinate. This only calmed him a little, though, as he lay down in his bed, leaving the light on. He fell asleep quickly, and had nightmares of running through the woods desperately trying to escape from something.
