What do you want

Summary:

Cement hanging out after school
Amity annoying the shit out of Mattholomule 💖

Work Text:

“Oh my Titan can you stop smiling at your scroll like that. You’ve been doing it for fifteen minutes straight it’s pissing me off.”

Matt and Amity were walking around Bonesborough without any particular destination. It was an after-school-afternoon and everyone else from their friend group was busy dealing with their own stuff right now.

“You’re just mad ‘cause you’re single.” Amity shrugged, typing out another message to her girlfriend, giggling softly when she received another text from her.

“Not my fault I’m so cool and intimidating nobody dares to ask me out” Matt said, looking a little bit too full of himself for what his statement was implying.

“Of course” the girl teased. After a few steps she added “Have you ever even liked anybody in that way?”

“Of course I have.” Matt replied, like it was a question with the most obvious answer.

“Do you like anyone right now?”

“Dude what are you even getting at” the younger witch was beginning to get annoyed by the direction in which this conversation was going.

“Damn just answer the question. It’s not that hard.” Amity pretended to be annoyed, but her smile gave her away.

“It’s not your business. Maybe I do. And what are you gonna do about it?”

“Just wanna know if your taste in crushes is any better from your taste in fashion” the taller witch teased, smirking at the boy walking next to her.

“Ha ha very funny. Mind you, but the only ones who catch my interests are the best and the brightest of the Boiling Isles.”

“Like that Kikimora’s robot?” joked Amity, sounding kind of judging.

“I didn’t actually like Roka. I’m not that stupid.” Matt said, clearly offended. “Plus she’s a girl. I don’t know how anyone can like those. No offence.”

“Dude, that’s gay” Amity looked at him, the teasing smirk painting on her face once again.

“What even is a gay” the shorter witch turned to her, confused, frowning his eyebrows.

Amity just laughed, looking back into her scroll. “So who is that special someone then?”

“Yeah wouldn’t you like to know, Blight” Matt crossed his arms, turning away.

“So you do fancy someone after all”

“Shut up you’re not hearing any more from me” Matt’s face started reddening despite his attempts against it.

“Oh come on, I have to have something to tell Luz later!” the girl whined jokingly.

“Fuck off I’m not telling you! You literally just admitted that you’re going to spread it around!”

“Okay, I promise not to tell a soul I swear.”

“Like I’d believe you.”

Amity let out a huff, about to give up, when she started thinking of potential suspects. It didn’t take long before something clicked in her brain.

“No way.” She put her scroll down and looked directly in the direction they were going.

“What.”

“Dude. And don’t even try to deny it.”

“What. What is your problem.” Matt was getting very tired of this very quickly. Amity’s head was now turned towards him.

“It’s Augustus, isn’t it?”

She saw Matt's expression flinch, his face reddening a little bit. She could also swear his heart skipped a bit.

“I knew it! Oh my Titan you’re totally crushing on Gus.” Amity laughed while Matt was getting more and more annoyed and flustered with every passing second.

“So what if I do? It’s none of your business!” he was a full on tomato now. He groaned and started walking faster, trying to get away from the conversation.

“I could help you, you know?” Amity smiled at the boy, not one hundred percent genuinely, but still. “You hang out like, all the time. I’m sure he wo-“

She was cut off by Matt “No! No you don’t get it.” he snapped, burying his face in his hands for a second, then pulling on his eye bags, groaning. “I’m not risking ruining the only real friendship I’ve had since I was born over a stupid crush.” When he said it Amity’s expression shifted into somewhat pitiful. “I very much prefer projecting those feelings onto robots who probably don’t even understand what I’m saying, thank you.”

The girl felt like she crossed the line, but decided to push it a little more anyway. Everything started adding up. She did not spend three months listening to Gus’ rants about how ‘he misses hanging out with Matt at the graveyard’ and how ‘he’s sure Matt would love to go around exploring the human realm with them’ for this to end as a forever yearning for something more than a friendship, but never actually doing anything about it because it’s too risky and scary for both sides.

“You know the chances of him liking you back are not that low” Amity tried to reassure the younger witch, but he was very stubborn.

“They literally are. I’m not even going to try to pretend like I’m the most likable person ever and everybody loves me right now.” This was a very out of character thing for Matt to say. It kind of surprised Amity to be honest.

“Dude he literally could not go a single day without bringing you up back in the human realm. Like, ok, with his dad? I get it. It’s his only family. We all talked and vented about ours all the time. But why you? Literally nobody could understand him. We were kinda starting to suspect something might be going on between you two.”

Matt stopped walking for a second, tightening up but quickly letting it go. He didn’t want to let the spark of hope get into his chest. He failed before he even attempted the challenge. He’s always hoped. He hoped Gus saw him the same way he saw Gus. He tried to quiet it. To shut these voices off. But now, with Amity’s words, they won.

He clenched his fists as Amity walked up to him. “What I’m trying to say is that maybe it’s worth the shot.” She put her hand on his shoulder. “I’m sure that even if he doesn’t feel the same way, which I honestly doubt, he’ll understand. He won’t stop talking to you suddenly just because you admire him a bit more than he admires you.”

“Why do you even care” he started walking again, an annoyed, but also soft expression on his face

“Girl, honestly? I’m tired of this gay pining shit” the taller witch shrugged and sighed.

“Again, what the fuck even is a gay”

“I don’t know, ask Augustus.”

Matt looked at Amity with the ‘really?’ stare and she just smirked, looking proud of herself.

“Grom’s coming up. Why don’t you just ask him out then?”

Matt looked down and put his hands in his pockets. “I’ll… Think about it.”
“There you go!” Amity nudged him with an elbow, smilings wide as they continued walking through the streets of Bonesborough.
