The Mystery of the Missing Orthotics

Summary:

Sometimes you have problems.

(That aren't the problems you thought you had.)

Notes:

My entry for the final day of Tobirama Week 2023, and the prompt I chose was 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOBIRAMA!'

This story is also a gift for SilverUtahraptor, whose orthotic insoles mysteriously vanished!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Izuna

Summary:

Sometimes, you have to answer a question.

(That you really don’t want to.)

Chapter Text

Izuna winces at the knock on his door.

It sounds polite, but somehow there's a definite undertone of demand to it.

As in 'open this door right now’.

Still, there's no dodging it, so he pulls open the door a crack. "Yes?" He peeks out, already sure of who he'll see.

"My orthotics are missing." It's a statement of fact, not a question, and Izuna takes it as such.

"And that has nothing to do with me." Izuna tries to close the door again, but Tobirama wedges it open through sheer strength. Fuck, the bastard may run as his preferred exercise, but his biceps are nothing to sneeze at either.

"Are you sure of that?" Tobirama's glare is fierce but Izuna doesn't budge.

"You always accuse me whenever your stuff is lost!" Izuna pokes his neighbour in the chest. "Always!"

"Are you telling me that you didn't take them?" Tobirama doesn't even seem to notice, damn his eyes.

"That would be some fucking weird shit to take, but read my lips!" Izuna over enunciates his denial. "I. Did. Not. Take them!"

“...fine." Tobirama shrugs, stepping back and that's enough for Izuna to slam the door in his face. "Tell me if you see them."

"Anything to be rid of you!" Izuna yells back, making sure Tobirama can hear him. "Now, go away!"

He presses his ear to the door, listening for the sound of retreating footsteps down the hall, and doesn't move until he hears them. "... I think he's gone." He squints, as if he can see right through the wall. "Yeah, that was his door closing."

"Oh thank god." Hashirama pops out of the coat closet, arms full of squirming puppy. "Izuna, I'm so sorry."

"This is all your fault," Izuna sounds judgemental because he is judgemental, and he eyes the half chewed orthotic in the puppy's mouth with revulsion.

"The puppy is for him!" Hashirama crouches, and the dog jumps down to the floor, growling as it attacks the orthotic again. "I just need to, to - "

"House train it first?" Izuna raises an eyebrow at his brother's best friend. "Make sure it doesn't pee everywhere and steal his shit?"

"Yes," Hashirama slumps dejectedly. "That."

Izuna pinches the bridge of his nose, regretting the day nii-san met this man. "You are such a disaster."
