Work Text:
Loki has been sitting by your bed for over a week now, time has finally caught up with his beautiful wife. He always knew marrying a mortal would end this way, but he always hoped he would find a way to save you. Every year on your name day, Loki would go to Odin and ask for him to extend your life. For not just your sake but for the sake of your children. Y/n was the best mother he could’ve asked for for his children, she gifted him with 3. Twin boys and a beautiful little girl, as beautiful as her mother. They are older now, and so is she. But unlike their children who were blessed with the same long life as their father, y/n continued to age. And year after year Odin continued to deny his request.
So here he is.
He doesn’t look like the Loki that everyone had been accustomed to. Deciding to cast an illusion on himself to make him look the same age as his wife. He wanted her to have the experience of growing old with the man she loved. He physically felt the same, just his appearance was altered to that of an older version of himself. As soon as he left her side he would drop the illusion to the dark prince everyone knew. And lately he’s been living up to the persona.
He was miserable. His wife. His beloved. The mother of his children is dying. And again he is on his way to the throne room to beg his father to extend her life. It’s not her name day but the healers are telling Loki that y/n’s time is short and the stars are starting to call her home.
No. He won’t have it.
Loki walks into the throne room. Walks up to Odin sitting on his throne and asks yet again.
“Odin Allfather, I am here to request life eternal for my wife, Princess Y/N, mother of my children, your grandchildren. The healers tell me she does not have much time before she is called to the stars. So again I am here, begging you, please, grant her this gift. Grant my children this gift.”
“Loki you knew what the outcome would be if you decided to wed a mortal. You knew this day would come.” Odin’s booming voice crosses the room.
Loki looks down to the floor, “I know. I’ve always known but that will not stop me from hoping you will eventually change your mind. My children will be devastated by the loss of their mother, they are still too young to be without her. I…father please….” Loki does something in front of Odin he has not done in some time. He cries, silent tears falling down his face and then he drops to his knees.
“I’m begging you father.” He will do anything, even this if it meant he was gifted with more time with you.
Odin looks at his son. “I’m sorry Loki, my decision is final.”
Loki nods, rises from the floor and leaves the room.
Loki’s children are waiting outside, Loki didn’t want them in there in the event Odin made the decision he ultimately made. He had made that mistake a few times when they were younger, hoping Odin would be swayed by their sad faces.
“I’m sorry my loves.”
All three look down. All three so young to be without their mother so soon bringing pain to Loki’s heart. He never thought he would have children and when he met y/n everything changed. When the twins were born he had never been happier in his life and then Aster was born. A spitting image of her mother. The most painful thing after you leave will be the resemblance he will always see in the children. Bittersweet reminders of his beloved.
“Let’s go sit with momma for a little bit yes?” He suggests, hoping seeing their mother will bring them some comfort.
They make their way to their suite and walk into Loki and y/n’s shared bedroom where the healers have set up her own healing ward so she can be as comfortable as possible surrounded by the people she loved.
Loki recasts the illusion, taking on the look of an old man. They walk in to the room and see that you are awake.
Loki walks up to your bed, your children close behind and takes your hand.
“My love, how are you feeling?”, he asks you quietly.
“Tired, I feel like I am always tired.” You see the sadness in his eyes, “what is it husband, why do you look so sad?”, you ask.
Loki closes his eyes and holds your hand a little tighter. For his sake more than yours really, “Odin has denied us again, he will not grant you with more time. Im sorry my love I have failed you.” He starts to cry, the reality of everything sinking in. He will have to say goodbye to you soon and he was not ready, this was his punishment for the pain he brought to so many beings all those years ago. Dark thoughts creeping through is mind, if he were Thor would his father still deny his request? If Thor’s precious mortal didn’t end their courtship, would father have granted her more time?
He feels a hand on his bowed head and three hands on his back, his wife and children trying to comfort him.
“Children, come here.” She requests, the twins walk over to the other side of the bed. Narfi sitting by your head, brushing your hair out of your face, Vali sits in the chair next to him and takes your hand. Astrid stays by her fathers side, rubbing his back and moving to sit on the bed and to lay her hand on top of the one that her father is also clutching.
“My time is coming my loves”, silent tears dripping down their faces, “I need you all to be strong and know that I love you and I will be watching you from the stars. Your grandmother is already calling me, I can feel her gentle touch even now.”, you say weakly.
You look over to Loki and smile, “my love, drop the illusion, I wish to see my beautiful prince one more time.”
With tears dripping down his face he grants your request and the illusion falls revealing his dark hair and bright green eyes, his face unchanged by time.
You smile, tears filling yours eyes. “My handsome prince, thank you for this beautiful life, for my beautiful children, for everything. I will always love you.”
“And I you my darling”, he leans in and kisses her. The room falls silent, only the sound of sniffles from the crying family.
You look at your children, “I love you my babies, take care of each other. Especially your dad.”
They all cuddle with you and tell you how much they love you and you fall asleep to the sound of your families quiet sniffles and words of love.
After you had fallen in to a deep sleep did Loki suggest the children go to bed.
“Alright loves, time for bed.”
“No, I want to stay with Momma!”, cries Astrid. The boys looking reluctant to leave as well.
“Momma needs her rest and so do all of you, come, you all can sit with her as long as you wish tomorrow.” Loki internally begging she will still be alive tomorrow.
The children give kisses to their mother and say their teary goodbyes and leave to go to their rooms.
After the children leave, Loki walks back over to your bed.
“My love if you can hear me, I need you to know that I love you so very much. You have given me so many wonderful gifts in this life and I feel ashamed I have failed you in this. I don’t know how I will move on from you, I do not believe my heart will ever recover. But I don’t want you to worry because I will be strong for our children, I will make sure they always remember their mother. They will never forget your face, your voice or your love. I will protect them with everything that I am. I love you y/n, you will be the truest love I will ever have in this long life.”
He kisses your forehead and moves over to the sleeper he had the healers put in after your condition started getting worse. He magically changes his clothes, lays down and with his wife in his line of sight, sleep finally winning the battle and Loki closes his eyes.
When Loki wakes up the next morning he looks over to your bed and you’re not there…
Panic fills him.
“Y/n? Y/n!” He runs from the suite into the main room looking for his wife’s maids or one of the healers overseeing her care through the night.
“Father?” Narfi pokes his head out of his room, “what is it father?
“Your mother, she’s not in her bed” he says frantically, realizing it is his son he is talking to and not wanting to scare him he changes his demeanor and calms himself. “Don’t worry my son, the maids probably took her to the healers for her treatments and bath.”
Narfi rubs his eyes, nods and goes back into his room.
Where the fuck are you?
He informs the guards he was leaving, knowing the children’s maids would be arriving soon to get them ready for their day. He makes his way over to the healing wing and barges in looking around frantically. He sees a healer, “where is she? Where’s my wife?”
“My Prince? Princess y/n was not brought here this morning, she should still be in your chambers..”
“Well she is not! Where is my wife?!” He’s irate, you couldn’t have gotten up and walked out of the palace! You didn’t even have the energy to keep your eyes open most days anymore. Where could you have gone.
In that moment, a guard walks in to the healing wing and informs Loki that Odin is requesting to see him in the throne room.
“I don’t have time for the Allfather presently, my wife is missing!” Loki angrily denies the guard.
“My Prince, the Allfather was insistent you come to the throne room immediately.”
Fine. If he wants to be the outlet for Loki’s rage. Very well.
He makes his way to the throne room and it is…full…full to the brim with the Asgardian people. Even Thor is there standing next to his wife, the Lady Sif.
It looks like his children have also been summoned because they are already there waiting at the bottom of the dais.
“What is this?” Loki rushes to his confused looking children.
“What is the meaning of this Allfather? I wake to my wife missing and now my children and I are forced in front of your throne in front of the entire Asgardian populace? Does your cruelty know no bounds?”
“My son, please, allow me to explain and all your questions will be answered.”, Odin tries to calm his irate son.
Odin rises from his throne to address everyone in the room. His booming voice filling it.
“Years ago my son fell. The darkness in him consuming him and almost everything around him, until he met Princess y/n. She fought the darkness that was trying to encompass my son’s soul and quieted the rage that lived inside of him. When my son asked for permission to marry the Lady y/n, I made it very clear, she would not be a recipient of Idunn’s golden apple granting her life eternal. I decreed he MUST love her for the rest of her natural life, if he wished to marry a mortal he would have accept her mortal lifespan as well.”
Odin takes a slight pause, waiting for the murmurs in the crowd to quiet down.
“Last night Princess y/n took her last breath as a mortal.”
Rage filled Loki, he could feel his children’s bodies go still with shock. How dare he? How dare he?!
Before Loki could react the great doors behind him opened and walked in his beautiful, young, vibrant wife. His feet felt like they were solidified to the ground, his brain not understanding what he was seeing walk towards him.
“Momma!!” Aster screams and runs towards her mother. The twins take off immediately after their sister.
Loki is still glued to the floor, eyes never leaving you.
You pull away from the children’s embrace and walk over to your husband and place your hand on his face.
“Baby, it’s really me. I’m here.” You gently tell him.
“How…how is this possible?..” He looks over to Odin while taking you in his arms.
Odin is looking down smiling from his thrown at the happy family, “I told you my son you would have to love her throughout her natural mortal life, you succeeded. You showed me and this entire realm your love for your wife, your dedication to her even when her body began to fail her, you remained by her side. Ever vigilant, ever faithful. You have been an exemplary father and husband. When Princess y/n took her last breath last night the spell I performed on your wedding night activated. When her mortal life ended her life eternal began.”
Loki is still in shock, not believing what he was hearing. He looked down at the woman in his arms. Looking deep into her eyes to see any deception or lie, no this was his beautiful wife. His y/n, his princess, the mother of his children. Alive and well. He still couldn’t believe his eyes. “My love, is this real? Tell me I am not dreaming, for if I wake and I am in that shitty bed I swear on all the Gods…”
He doesn’t have time to finish his sentence, you kiss him the way you have been wanting to kiss him for years but you haven’t been able to. Your kiss, you hope, shows him how much you love him and missed being with him this way. You break away breathless and turn in his arms to look at your children. You hold out your arm, silently asking them to come join the embrace between you and their father. They sprint into your waiting arms, you and Loki encompassing all of them. The children crying from joy from seeing their mother well again, Loki crying from..well everything.
He separates himself from his family and walk towards Odin, he walks up the dais and brings his arms around Odin for an embrace.
“Father, thank you. Thank you so much.”
“Do not thank me my son, love your wife, love your children, that is how you can show your thanks.” He smiles at his son, happy he was finally able to do right by him.
Loki smiles through his tears, walks down the steps of the dais and takes his family into his arms again. So thankful he now has eternity with the woman he loves.
The end.
