Work Text:
It was another snowy day in Seattle, Carina and Maya were snuggled up in bed with their newborn son finally asleep in his basinet. It was pure bliss, but it didn’t last very long. Their oldest daughter, Annabella came bounding into the room jumping up on the bed declaring that it was snowing. Maya wipes her eyes and sits up with Annabella on her lap.
“I can see that Anniebbell!” She tries to sound excited by their newborn, Matteo, had been awake most of the night so the moms had not gotten much sleep, especially since Carina has to take it easy recovering from an emergency c-section.
“Can we go play in it?” The four-year-old practically yelled causing Maya to giggle at her cuteness and Carina to wake up.
“After you eat breakfast with your sister amore Mio” Carina said lightly tickling her oldest making her giggle even more.
Once the giggling slowed down Maya spoke, “Okay Anna banana, let’s go get your sister and then make breakfast.” She then picked up the four-year-old and headed off to her middle child’s room.
“Evie! Wake up, it snowed!” Annabella announced when Maya turned the light on in Evelina’s room. The two-year-old was still asleep and did not appreciate being woken up. When Evelina began to whine from her toddler bed Maya but Annabella down so she could ease her younger daughter into the day.
“Why don’t you go help Mama with breakfast Anniebell” Maya said so that she could pick up Evelina and hopefully avoid a classic Evelina meltdown. With Annabella out of the room, she was able to scoop up Evelina, sit in the rocking chair and gently get her awake and excited to play in the snow after breakfast.
When they finally made their way to the kitchen, they found Annabella helping Carina make some French toast from the learning tower they kept in the kitchen so the girls could help cook. Maya placed Evelina in her booster seat and then began to prepare the table. Soon all four were seated for breakfast for the first time since Matteo was born. After everyone had eaten Matteo began crying for his own food and Annabella and Evelina began demanding to go play in the snow.
Carina was a little upset that she would likely be feeding Matteo the entire time her girls were outside, so she opted to watch from the living room window as she fed the newborn. Maya on the other hand was so excited to play in the snow with her girls. She was quick to get the girls and herself dressed as she didn’t want anyone to overheat.
The girls stayed outside longer than Carina had anticipated, Maya helped them build a snowman, pushed them down the slight hill in their yard and watched them slide down their slide a few times and land in the powder. Carina watched her girls from the comfort of the couch as she fed Matteo. Once he was finished Carina placed him in the pack-and-play they kept downstairs and continued to watch the outdoor play. When it looked like the girls were getting cold Carina decided that she would make everyone hot chocolate.
Just as Carina was putting the finishing touches on the cocoa, Maya and the girls can in the back door. Abandoning the drinks, she went to the door to hear all about playtime and to help move the wet clothes to a place where they could dry.
“Mama! Snow cold” Evelina announced to Carina.
“The snow is fredda piccolo” Carina affirmed. Evelina nodded and said “fredda” in her cute Italian accent.
“Mama we builded a snowman and slided down da hill!” Annabella announced.
“I saw Bella” Carina smiled at her oldest as she removed Evelina’s boots.
“Fast” Evelina interjected.
“You went fast on the sled” Carina confirmed, and Evelina nodded and smiled. “It looked like you had fun! Matteo and I watched from the couch while he ate.”
They continued to get undressed and once all the wet clothes were put to dry Carina looked at all her girls’ rosy cheeks and said, “Who is ready for some hot chocolate?”
Annabella and Evelina both nodded and shouted “Me!” and they ran to the kitchen to enjoy the warm drink. Maya and Carina giggled and followed the girls, Maya thanking Carina for making the cocoa.
Once everyone had their cocoa in appropriate cups the new family of five cuddled up on the couch and watched Frozen sipping their hot chocolate with the snow falling in the background.
