People You Know

Summary:

Chat Noir has discovered Monarch’s identity and called Ladybug for a patrol.

Work Text:

Chat Noir nervously and eagerly waited at their usual patrol spot, his feet dangling over the rooftop as the afternoon sun shone brightly against the metal of his baton.

He had called Ladybug on his communication device an hour earlier, specifically to arrange this very special important meet-up. He was sure that once he explained everything he had found out within the past 24 hours, his lady would completely understand and want to help him. After all, it was for a good cause.

After a few minutes, he heard two feet land beside him, and Chat looked up to see Ladybug, and he grinned up at her.

“Glad to see you didn’t fur-get about me just yet, bugaboo,” he teased her, earning a mock-glare from Ladybug as she sat beside him, resting her hands on the ledge of the rooftop.

“You know I could never forget about you and your awful cat puns,” she playfully retorted back, then raising an eyebrow. “So why did you wanna meet so early? Our patrol isn’t until later tonight, so I’m hoping this is not supposed to be a date or-“

“Okay, first of all, ouch ,” he feigned a hurt a expression, bringing a hand to his chest theatrically. “You wounded me! And no, actually, this isn’t a date. I’ve actually learned some important information, and I wanted to ask for your help,” he began genuinely, looking out to the skyline pensively.

To this, Ladybug raised an eyebrow inquisitively, unsure of what to make of his expression. She couldn’t tell if this would be a good or bad thing.

“Oh? What is this…new information?”

“I um…happen to know who Monarch is,” he said, now beginning to fidget with his baton in his hands. He didn’t know how else to go into this conversation, and Adrien knew it’d be slightly awkward to talk about, but once they delved into it, it’d get easier.

“What?” Ladybug looked over at him, ensuring that he was being serious about this. “How did you figure it out? Who is it?”

There was a small intake of a breath, as Chat finally stopped nervously fidgeting with his baton, strapping it back to the belt of his suit. He was determined to be as open and honest as he could without revealing much, and he knew he could do this. “That’s the thing, I can’t really tell you. I know how this sounds, but trust me, I talked to him and-“

Her eyes widened like saucers, staring at Chat intensely. He appeared to be slightly flustered at her reaction. “You talked to Monarch? What do you mean you just ‘talked’ to him?! Did you sit and discuss things over a cup of tea or-“

“No, no, it wasn’t really like that. Look, I can’t really explain everything because it’ll expose my identity, but I can assure you everything he’s done is for a good cause! Don’t worry, just trust me on it,” he said earnestly with a grin, assuming she’d understand. “I just think…we should help him.”

Ladybug stared blankly at Chat Noir, unaware of whether or not he was joking. “You’re joking…This has to be some sort of elaborate joke right?”

“No…it’s not a joke. Sooo could I borrow your earrings, so we can give our miraculouses to Monarch and help?”

She blinked, shaking her head after a moment of shock. “Let me get this straight. You won’t tell me who he is, or what he wants to use it for, and you want me to give him my miraculous—Yeah, there’s no way that’s happening,” she laughed a bit. “ Chat, you already know that every wish comes with a sacrifice. It doesn’t matter what-“

“No, no, I said it’s for a GOOD cause,” he justified, thinking she had just blatantly misheard him. “Obviously, I wouldn’t help if it was for a bad cause. Duh.”

“I heard you right the first time, and no, I’m not going to give up my miraculous,” she slightly scooted away from her partner, beginning to get up from where she sat.

Please, m’lady, you have to trust me. I genuinely believe that this is a great cause, and we can finally stop all the fighting! We won’t have to worry about akumas anymore! Pretty please.”

She went quiet for a few moments, the two locking eyes for brief seconds.

“I think…you’re misguided, Chat,” she looked away from him disappointedly, now having stood up. “It doesn’t matter if it’s for a ‘good cause’ or not, he’s been terrorizing Paris for ages now, and hurting innocent victims. I think you need some time to think and come to your senses about this,” she spoke calmly, turning to look at him again, her gaze softening.

She didn’t quite understand what was going through his head, or why he believed that this was the right thing. But she knew that Chat Noir was a morally good person, and would eventually realize that he was wrong if he thought longer about it. “Just…let me know when you’re ready to tell me his identity, alright?”

Chat Noir frowned sadly, unsure of why this was going so downhill. She should have understood, this had to be an entire misunderstanding. If Ladybug knew it was to save his mother, she would definitely help! But he knew he couldn’t risk splaying out that information, especially since it could lead to his identity.

But his mother’s life was on the line. He seriously needed Ladybug’s help.

But now, as he stared up at her, a concerned, perplexed expression on her face, he didn’t know what to say to her. He couldn’t say much more to convince her.

“I’m sorry you feel that way, Ladybug,” he spoke carefully and calmly, attempting to articulate his thoughts correctly. “But I’m sure you’ll come around,” he smiled a bit weakly.

“You know very well that I won’t.” She looked away from him in slight annoyance, shooting out her yoyo to a nearby building and swinging away.

She’d come around . He knew she would.
