Sigma hadn’t meant to get a pet.
He’d been walking his usual route home when he came across a fluffy friend. It was a rather small kitten which appeared malnourished. So, he scooped it up and brought it back to his apartment. His plan was to nurse it back to health, and then give it to a family.
Although, after a couple of days with the kitten, he didn’t want to give the fluff ball away anymore. The kitten wasn’t very active the first few days, and he worried about it. However, after nearly a week, he realized that a kitten can be far more difficult than he expected.
Like any other morning, Sigma got up, and put some mushy kitten food out, along with a bowl of water. Then, he got himself some breakfast and sat down on the floor to sit with the kitten while it ate. The kitten trotted over, sniffing at its food, before deciding Sigma’s food looked more appealing.
Without warning, the small ball of fluff was digging its claws into the former casino manager. He cried out in pain, just before watching the ball of fluff launch into his food. The cereal ended up all over the floor, and the kitten began chasing it around like toys.
Sighing, Sigma got up and grabbed a broom, sweeping up the cereal, and giving up on breakfast. Then, he went to get dressed for the day, and found that he had to treat the scratches. A quick spraying of rubbing alcohol, and then wrapping bandages over them was good enough for him.
When he went to pull his clothes on he found cat hair all over them. Frustration was quickly building up, but would dissipate when Sigma saw the kitten looking lively and running around the apartment. He was happy that it was doing better, but he was getting overwhelmed by having to care for another living creature.
However, he didn’t have time to watch as the kitten zoomed across the apartment, as he had to hurry to work. His clothes were still covered in cat hair, but he’d forgotten on his way, as he realized he was running late and started to run. So, when he arrived to the office, Sigma wasn’t thinking about how he must look.
“Um, Sigma, you good there? You look like a fluff ball exploded all over you,” Atsushi nervously joked.
“I’m good, just ended up running most of the way here. Got distracted, and it almost made me late,” Sigma felt bad for barely being on time.
Suddenly, a voice called from the other side of the office, “Sigma, you were playing with a stray cat, weren’t you?”
Looking over, he saw Ranpo facing his direction, “Yes, I was. Kittens are just so silly, I couldn’t help myself. I apologize for how I look because of that.”
“Sigma, you don’t have to apologize for liking cats, and getting distracted by them. The president isn’t here yet, and it’s probably because of a few stray cats he likes to feed,” Yosano told him, stepping out of her office to join in on the conversation.
“The president likes cats?” Sigma somehow hadn’t realized.
That got him a look from Kunikida, who had been ignoring them to work, “It’s the president’s most obvious passion. He had several cats things in his office, and will bring strays into the office far too often. He enjoys when Haruno brings her cat in.”
All the revelations made Sigma feel very confused, “I feel like I know nothing now.”
Of course, that was the moment Dazai decided to show up, “What’s up with him?”
“His world views have been destroyed by cats,” Ranpo casually replied, putting a sucker in his mouth.
“It happened to most of us, besides Ranpo, Atsushi, Kenji, and myself. Everyone else was confused about the president liking cats, and had a crisis,” Dazai acted as if it was the most normal thing. “Also, Sigma, try not to get attacked by the cat next time. I could hear your screaming.”
Atsushi looked suddenly worried, “Are you okay?”
“Oh, yeah, just got a little scratched, and panicked briefly,” Sigma brushed it off, getting up, and heading to his desk.
Yosano smirked at him, “I could fix you up, so you don’t have to worry about infection.”
Waving his hands, and panicking, he gave a simple, “No thank you. I think I’ll be fine.”
“If you say so,” she walked back into her office, looking disappointed.
Then, as fast as the conversation started, it stopped. Sigma ended up having to change part way through the day because of the cat hair. Kunikida refused to let him go on a mission with it all over his clothes.
Which led everyone to finding out about the kitten…
It went over well with most of them, and the president convinced Kunikida to let Sigma keep the cat.
