Work Text:
Darlin glared at the recipe in front of them like it was someone who had just crossed them. They were trying to determine where exactly to start, since the prep and make time for both the frosting and cake were about the same. They didn’t have long before Sam got home and they didn’t want to hear any of the snide remarks they were sure he would make. Darlin wasn’t exactly known for being handy in the kitchen, but they were determined to actually make this work. They had volunteered to make a dessert for a pack function that would be happening the next day and wanted to get started early in case something went wrong.
After about a few minutes of struggling to get the stand mixer to actually work, the baking process was finally underway. They couldn’t believe how many cooking supplies Sam had shoved away in his cupboards; especially since he doesn’t gain anything from eating food. Unfortunately, though, Darlin had somehow managed to get flour all over their shirt and even some on their face. They somehow hadn’t realized that starting the mixer on high would create a cloud of flour that would puff up onto them.
While preparing to clean up the mess they’d just made, the sound of keys at the front door sent their heart racing. They cursed under their breath knowing full well Sam was about to tease the living hell out of them.
“Darlin’? You home? You won’t believe what Vincent told me today. I swear… that man is dumber than a box of rocks sometimes. I mean really I love him, I do but …. What in the hell happened here?” Sam cut himself off the minute he took in the sight of Darlin and the mess they had created in the kitchen. The man doubled over as loud and deep laughter bubbled out from him. He was practically on the floor by the time he managed to calm himself down long enough to see Darlin’s face; which was extremely embarrassed and pissed. Their expression sent the vampire into another fit of laughter, causing his mate to snarl something under their breath while they continued to clean.
“You about done yet? I’m kind of busy,” they grumbled, turning away from Sam so they could turn off the mixer. Sam came up behind them and kissed their neck while his arms snaked around their waist.
“I’m sorry for laughin’. It’s just, that wasn’t quite the sight I was expecting when I walked through the door. What on earth are you tryin’ to do?” Sam chuckled against their skin, another kiss pressed to their neck to make up for his teasing.
“It’s for a pack thing tomorrow. I don’t really go to these things often or stay long, but I figured I’d go. Especially since David and Ash are going, I thought I’d tell them congrats in person, you know?” Darlin’ hummed as they set the bowl on the counter and began getting the wet ingredients ready. Sam grabbed the recipe sheet and looked over it quietly while his mate continued working beside him. He couldn’t help but smile and feel happy that they were trying again with their pack. They’d been so distant from it, and he knew how much of a toll that took on them. But to see them get somewhat excited about attending a function was nice.
“Well, do you need any help? I can start on the frosting for you if you want?” Sam offered. Darlin smiled and nodded, thanking him for helping out. It wasn’t often that the two got to have domestic moments like this in the kitchen. Sam didn’t exactly need to eat food and oftentimes Darlin would just order takeout. But now that the two lived together, there were more opportunities for the couple to bake and cook together.
In no time, the cake was in the oven and Sam was beginning to finish up the frosting to set aside for later. Now it was Darlin’s turn to come up behind their mate and hold onto him tightly. They rested their head on his shoulder as he finished up the last bit of mixing for the frosting. Without any warning, he scooped a bit up onto his finger and smeared it on his mate’s nose.
“Sam! You jerk!” Darlin laughed. Sam cackled and threw his head back. However, his mate quickly retaliated by grabbing some frosting of their own and smearing it across the vampire’s cheek. He cried out and grabbed the bowl, holding it away and out of reach of his revenge-hungry mate.
“Oh no! No no no! If we keep at this there’ll be none left and you’ll have to show up with a bare cake”. He set the bowl down and grabbed Darlin’s hands, holding them to his chest so that they wouldn’t be able to reach the frosting. The giggles from both eventually died down and Darlin pressed their lips softly to Sam’s.
“Thank you for helping make sure this ended up being edible,” they said, a smile creeping its way onto their features.
“Of course, Darlin’. You know I’d do anything for you. Even braving your somewhat…chaotic…baking techniques,” Sam teased which only caused his mate to roll their eyes. “I love you, Darlin’”.
“I love you too, baby,” they whispered before they pressed a kiss to his lips once again. “Now then. I’m going to go clean this frosting off. We’ve got some time before we can actually use the rest of it, so maybe we can watch that movie you were telling me about?” Darlin asked while they walked off to wherever a mirror was.
“Sure thing. I’ll meet you on the couch,” Sam spoke. Eventually, the two ended up cuddled up together with a movie playing softly in the background. Truth be told neither were really paying as much attention to the movie as they were joking around with each other. The worries of the day melted away once they found the other’s embrace. They had made quite a little home for themselves in each other. Because to both of them, “home” wasn’t a building or room, but it was the person they chose to share their lives with. Baking disasters and all.
