Work Text:

A rainstorm was encompassing most of Tokyo, drenching it in a steady rain that forced most of the populace to seek shelter under umbrellas, including the residents of the biggest residential district, Yongen-Jaya. Tae Takemi, the so-called Doctor of Death was currently taking a break from work, leaning against the wall of her clinic, casually observing the passersby’s who were complaining about the weather and generally not having a great time with it. To her, this sort of weather usually meant more patients, usually ones who tripped and fell and had some minor injuries. Despite it being annoying to her, she did it with pride, because being a doctor meant that she helped people no matter what.

Currently she had a bottle of green tea she got from the vending machine in hand and was drinking the rest of it, her mind just in thought about a few things, including having to put the info about her latest patient into her computer. That sort of stuff wasn’t fun for her since she wasn’t particularly computer savvy, but it was part of her tasks that she had to do regardless.  Once she finished her green tea, she crumpled the plastic bottle in her hand and proceeded to head into the elevator to throw the bottle away in her trash.

It didn’t take her too long to get back to her clinic, hearing that familiar jingle from her door before heading to her desk, grabbing her chart, and was putting said info into her computer. New patients were uncommon these days, since she had her usual clientele and nobody else. Despite her reputation being restored, not everyone trusted her still with her untested medicine, so she was still forced to deal with her usual clientele for the most part, which was why having someone new was kind of a surprise to her. With the pen now in her mouth she kept inputting stuff, getting focused to make sure that it was all correct.

What she didn’t realize though was that her day was about to get very interesting.  She heard that jingle of the door opening, a look of curiosity and surprise on her face since she wasn’t expecting a patient for another 30 minutes according to her schedule. When she turned to see who it was, it was her little guinea pig which for a split second made her lips turn into a smile, until she realized that something was off with him, and her lips curled into a frown, and she took the pen from her mouth. He was injured, and not just in there was a scratch on his face or something, this was genuine deserving of her attention.

There was a big black bruise around his left eye and on his right cheek, dried up blood underneath his nose and some blood pooling in his mouth. He was holding his side, a pained expression on his face as he was carrying his school backpack on his other shoulder. What the hell happened to him? Was this something phantom thief related? He had confined in her about that before helping her out with her problems, but as far as she knew anything that happened with that wouldn’t reflect on him, so she was bewildered. And concern was evident on her face as she dropped what she was doing immediately. “Exam room. Now, mister.”

Her mind was a flurry of thoughts as she rushed into the exam room getting some stuff together. She was going to focus on getting the blood off him, looking over the bruises and seeing the severity of the injuries overall. More than likely, she was going to have to call Sojiro over this, whether he wanted to or not. He still had his reputation to contend with, and people seeing him like this was not going to help with that at all. It was tying her hands together a bit of what she could do. She didn’t want to have to take him to an actual hospital if she had too either, but she could only do so much if it was serious.

Now that he was in the exam room, she ordered him onto the exam bed, and he did so without saying a word. She took his bag from him and placed it on the floor as she overlooked him. First things first, she had him open his mouth and was seeing if there was any missing teeth or major injuries there. It seemed he was probably socked in the mouth at one point, but he was lucky to not have lost any teeth. She helped soak up some of the blood with cotton balls and put them in a biological hazard bag to be disposed of later. She wiped off the dried-up blood below his nose and disposed of that in a bag. She just let off a sigh looking at him. “Please tell me what happened. Is this a phantom thief thing or did you get into a fight in this world? I need to know so I know if the authorities are going to get involved in this.”

“Well, um…” He began as he was looking at her wounds. “It was phantom thief related. We got ambushed by a strong enemy and I took the brunt of the impact before we managed to get away. Some of the others were injured but not as much as I was.” He admitted, his usual cocky nature nowhere to be seen, replaced with a more downtrodden one.  It wasn’t hard to tell that he was upset over the whole ordeal since he was the leader and his job was to keep everyone safe, and he almost wasn’t able to do so. So that was what had him all upset. The wounds that he sustained were just a secondary effect.

“I see. I was under the impression that what you did as a phantom thief never reflected in this world. I guess I was wrong in that case. You know that stuff always worries me my little guinea pig.” She reminded him since knowing what he did, what they all did raised her concern levels up high. They were teenagers for god’s sake, and they were going around, doing things that were upsetting the power structure of the entire country, having a massive target on their back for that reason. Legal stuff was something that she couldn’t do. “This is going to sting, but it should help a little bit.”

A cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol would be applied to some of the wounds on his face, and she watched as he winced in a lot of pain. He was also going to have to take some pain killers, which she supplied to him since no doubt he was in a lot of pain. “Now then, lift up your shirt for me and let me check that out.” When he lifted his uniform up, she saw the extent of the injuries. Lots of cuts and a big purple bruise on his ribs. It was not a pretty sight. She felt at it, noting the wincing, and yelping in pain. From what she could tell it was not broken, but a few of the ribs were bruised and possibly fractured. That was something that an x-ray would have to reveal.

“Good news is that you have no broken ribs. But they are bruised, and possibly cracked. You would need to go to a proper hospital for that and I know that’s something you don’t want to do. I will help you out in every way that I can though.” That was something that she wanted to make sure he was fully aware of. She meant a lot to him after what he did, and seeing him in this state was well, upsetting to say the least. As she was thinking about her treatment options moving forward, he brought up a question that surprised her. Asking if he was a good leader or not.

Clearly, he was even more distressed over this whole ordeal than she expected, and she sat down on the bed next to him after making him lower his shirt and gave him a serious look. “You are not a bad leader. You are a teenager for god’s sake, you shouldn’t have to deal with all of this. I’m sure your friends appreciate everything that you do for them, and from the sounds of it there wasn’t anything you could do to stop the ambush that happened. You did everything that you could, protecting your friends in a selfless manner like this. You’re just lucky you didn’t get any more injured and or killed.”

A small hug was offered, just a small one to avoid injuring him any further than he already was. When she did, another surprising thing happened. He broke down a bit, some tears flowing down his face as he cried on her shoulder. She patted his back, since it seemed that he had gone through a lot already and his façade was breaking down in the moment. “You may think that you have the whole world on your shoulders, that you have to do all of this stuff but remember that you aren’t alone. You have your friends, and you have me if you need me alright?” She lifted his chin up to make him look at her through teary eyes.  “I’m going to call Sojiro and tell him that you were injured today. I won’t go into details about it, just letting him know that you are going to take the next few days off from school to rest and recover from an unfortunate injury. I’ll make up an excuse, so you don’t have to worry about that.”

She would give him a small kiss on the cheek before releasing his chin and she went back to her doctor mode. “So, I’m going to give you some of my highest strength painkillers. What I’m also prescribing you to do is put ice packs on your bruises to help with the swelling. As for your ribs, I’m going to wrap it in a bandage to compress it a bit. I also want you to apply ice to that area as well. This will probably take a few weeks to fully heal up, and I doubt you are going to stop being a phantom thief during that time. But when you do, take it very easy.”

She got him some of her pain killers and then grabbed a bandage roll, telling him to lift his shirt again and she wrapped around the wound several times, making sure it was nice and compressed before securing it. “You may also have to go to a dentist to check your mouth out. I didn’t see any missing teeth, but they also may be loose, and you probably will have tooth pain in that case. And remember, to take it easy and get a lot of rest and recovery. You may be a teenager, but you aren’t infallible. I will be doing some house calls to check up on you as well.”

Helping him off the exam bed, she gave him his pain killers, a few warm ice packs that needed to be put in the freezer, and then wrote a doctor’s note for the school so he could have at least a few days off. “There you go, my little guinea pig. Like I said, I’m going to call Sojiro before you get home and inform him of what happened.” Pulling out her phone, she called his cell since apparently, he had her number since she was a woman. That man, as nice as he was, kind of annoyed her at times. “Yes, this is Takemi of Takemi clinic.  Amamiya-san got injured and will be requiring rest and relaxation for a bit. He will be there shortly. Sorry, I can’t go over what exactly happened to him, patient doctor confidentiality. He can explain himself.”

She ended the call, and put her phone away, and then gave him one more hug, the height difference between the two really showing now compared to when they were sitting on the bed. “Take care of yourself alright? And remember, you aren’t bad at anything. Just bad circumstances.” With that, she watched him make his way out of the exam room and her clinic. She shook her head and went back to what she was doing before, though her mind was still thinking about him, hoping that he didn’t end up getting himself killed over this whole phantom thieves’ stuff.”

This is just a random drabble that I wrote for my tumblr blog Myuzucompendium, so it doesn't really connect to anything. I just wanted to write something nice and sweet between Tae and Ren.
