“Even,” Isak repeated in a rushed whisper. “I can’t lose you again.” He reached forward with his cast and grabbed Even’s shirt. He gripped it, hard, just like he was supposed to do in his exercises.
Even shook his head. “You won’t. I promised you. I promise you.” He dropped the marker and placed his hands on Isak’s head, gently cupping him over his scar. He pulled him in and tilted his face to the side, so he could kiss him on the cheek. “I promise,” he swore into Isak’s flushed skin. As Isak pulled back, Even’s long fingers lightly dragged over the scar, setting it on fire. Isak was gasping. “Shhh. Put your shoes on.”
Isak felt the same as he did before, when he was stumbling down the hall, overwhelmed by the possibility of Even to even see straight. He didn’t want to go. He didn’t want to leave Even here.
“If he’s still here, I’ll come find you.” Sandra was stern but soothing, cutting off his blubbering with reasonable expectations. “If not, he’ll get his phone back before he leaves.”
Isak lifted his arm. “He gave me his number.” She couldn’t see it in the grayscale mess, but she nodded confidently anyway.
“Text him.”
“Okay.”
Then, for a moment, they were just nodding at each other, shoring up an unspoken strength. “You’ll heal. He’ll heal. You’ll find each other again.”
“Okay.”
