Holly Black and the Mirror of Erised
Chapter 1
The Boy Who Lived
Holly!
This was the last thing Lady Lily J. Black née Evans ever said. Just before being struck by the killing curse. The Dark Lord Voldemort then turned his wand on little Harry.
Avada Kedavra!
Cried out the Dark Lord again, only this time the killing curse didn't kill the target. The killing curse rebounded blasting the caster with its full force and leaving only a lightning bolt scar upon little Harry, however it also severed a part of Voldemort's soul which unknown to Voldemort himself that this happened, latched itself to the newly formed scar. Lord Voldemort unknowingly made Harry his seventh horcrux. The only sign upon Harry that he had been hit by the killing curse was the cursed scar shaped like a bolt of lightning, which went from his forehead, over his right eye, and ended just under it.
Rubeus Hagrid a giant of a man in a moleskin coat, walked carefully (which was difficult given his size) through the house that should have been protected by the fidelius charm. Hagrid had already seen James Potter lying against the stairs, he had died fighting and from the carnage around him, had been putting up a good fight. The sound of his heavy footfalls upon the upper landing echoed down the empty hall. Lily must have protected her son, Hagrid though. When Hagrid opened the door to little Harry's room, Hagrid's face fell behind the tangled mess of black hair and beard, his beetle black eyes watering at the sight. There lying before the crib where little Harry was quietly waiting was Lily, lifeless, yet her body wasn't positioned right. Lily's green eyes were closes and she was laying parallel to the crib as though she were lain there.
This shouldn't have happen.
Hagrid said. He tried to figure out how Lily had ended up like this lying parallel to the crib, eyes closed, and a chain with her wedding ring on it lying on her blouse. It came to him after a moment of thought, Severus Snape! That explained the recent set of footprints apart from James' Lily's and Voldemort's, why Lily was lain in such a respectful manner and her eyes being closed, as well as little Harry wrapped in a blanket, as though he were sleeping. It was at this that Hagrid acted, checking over the little one year hold he had been sent to retrieve on Professor Dumbledore's orders. Hagrid breathed a sigh of relief when he found young Harry still alive, but with a nasty scar going from this forehead over his right eye to the check just below it.
Come on little one, up yeh get.
Hagrid said picking up little Harry. For the first time since Snape had cried over his mother's body, Harry stirred. Hagrid found Harry an interesting little baby, for one thing, he had both black and auburn red hair, for another he looked a little feminine for a baby boy, but that didn't matter much. Harry only seemed to react to being moved away from his mother's body, but remained silent on the journey out of the house. The moment Hagrid had left the house was when he heard the roaring sound of a motorcycle.
The motorcycle that was making the sound was slowly coming down from the sky landing in front of the pathway to the front door. While the motorcycle was huge, the man upon it wasn't as impressive as Hagrid, though he was still tall, he had a mane of black hair matching Harry's more than James' jet black hair, as well as a finely trimmed beard and mustache. The man wore a fine jacket and a button up shirt that was unbuttoned at the top, finely tailored jeans, completed with steel toed leather boots and studded leather belt that set the appearance of a man of high-class upbringing that had never left his rebellious phase. He would of been out of place and welcomed at high class establishments and rock concerts. The man was none other than Sirius Orian Black, the black sheep and recently reinstated heir of the Noble and most Ancient House of Black,
Hagrid?
Sirius called out to the giant of a man before him, his grey eyes taking in Harry wrapped in a blanket in the half-giant's hands, She's... They're not... He didn't...
I'm sorry.
Hagrid said, He died fighting and she sacrificed herself to save Harry.
Sirius simply walked over to Hagrid then sat down next to him tears in his eyes.
I should of... It's my fault...
Sirius said seemingly broken by the events that had just happened.
Nah, yeh can't go blaming yerself, it weren't yer fault anyhow.
Hagrid said sitting down next to the man trying his best to comfort him.
Sirius seemed to calm down a bit after that but he still sat there contemplating Hagrid's words. Finally, Sirius stood up and turned to face Hagrid, You're right, now, give me Harry, Hagrid.
Can't do that, Sirius, Dumbledore's orders.
Hagrid said calmly though he did turn so Harry wasn't as close to Sirius as before, resulting in Harry stirring.
What?
Sirius asked, What reason does Dumbledore have to prevent me from looking after him?
He's to go to his family.
Hagrid explained, Have to live with 'em muggle relatives.
Sirius' eyes went wide, Dumbledore meant for Harry to go to the Dursleys, that would be a mistake, in an instant Sirius held Hagrid at wandpoint.
Give me Harry, Hagrid.
Sirius said his voice calm but with an edge only a parent could bring, Don't make me do this.
I can't, he has to go live with his family, something about Lily's sacrifice and being famous before he could walk and talk.
Hagrid replied now shielding Harry from Sirius' wand.
Sirius immediately realized why Dumbledore had told Hagrid about this, the theorized sacrificial shield, if Harry was protected by this, but Dumbledore didn't know that Sirius was Harry's real father and Sirius wasn't going to let Dumbledore risk his son becoming an obscurial or worse just because of his wife's sacrifice.
Give me my son.
Was all Sirius said before (to a very confused Hagrid) he cast stupefy on him. In an instant Sirius had Harry in his open arm and had used a spell to slowly drop the large man to the ground.
Sirius had magicked up a means of keeping Harry close to him while he levitated his motorcycle's saddle bags which were magically extended, entering the house where his surrogate brother and wife lay dead to collect items that would be important for his son. The first thing he saw was James Potter's body still lying on the floor. Sirius knelt down and closed his surrogate brother's eyes, that's twice now that Sirius had lost a brother, Regulus dying the year before, which was why Harry's full name was Harry Arcturus Black. Sirius took his wand and tried his best to collect the final moments of James' memories, with surprising success. After making sure James Potter's body was lain in a better position than partially on the stairs where he could be trodden on, Sirius turned to the living room and began to collect pictures, some items of importance, and certain books that were definitely magical (as well as some of Lily's favorite muggle books that she had gotten Sirius, James, and Remus to enjoy). As far as the kitchens were concerned there was very little to collect from there aside from Lily's favorite cookbooks, Sirius wasn't surprised and found it amusing to find the potion books of both James and Lily in the kitchens and after collecting them moved on. The hall had very little to gather up, aside from a few pictures hanging on the wall there was only the small child sized broom in the cubbourd under the stair, this broom was a gift Sirius had sent Harry, which was how he, Lily, and James found out that Harry had inherited James' talent for flying through the blood adoption Lily and Sirius had James do shortly after Harry was born.
All that's left here is upstairs now, Harry.
Sirius said, it was then looking down at his son that he noticed something was off. Harry had very early on displayed magic though not how a newborn witch or wizard would, instead of the normal accidental magic, Harry subconsciously utilized his metamorphmagus abilities. Metamorphmagus was a black family magical trait that allowed one to alter their appearance, with practice this could range from anything from normal hair and eye color to animal features and even alternating one's gender with the latter two being temporary as leaving these would put strain on one's body. Sirius and Andromeda were the only Blacks to have children with this trait both due to their partners not being related to them in such a manner as to result inbreeding. Harry initially showed his metamorphmagus by changing his eye color to a grey blue to bright green hazel color, shortly after this discovery, Harry started to subconsciously appear more feminine despite being an infant. Lily had noted that Harry didn't just appear more feminine but had completely changed when looking after her son, which this very ability was why both Lily and Sirius had decided to include the alternate name they had settled on (if their child was born a girl) which was Holly Astra Black. Lily had noted that this change had become more frequent recently.
What am I going to do with you, Holly?
Sirius said with a sigh. He finally reached the landing of the second floor Sirus turned to the bedroom Lily and James shared. Here was clear evidence that Lily and James weren't married, instead of a single bed there were two and the room was partially divided between them. Sirius gather up some of the items there, mostly personal effects and certain clothes (primarily the wizarding ones though some of the muggle type clothes were taken) for Holly later. That left only Holly's room.
The sight of his wife's dead body broke Sirius' heart, she lay peacefully next to the crib eyes closed. Sirius began to collect most of everything within the room, from toys to clothes anything that survived the cursed that as Sirius searched around the room, became obvious that it rebounded upon the caster. Four distinct stuffed animals were among the surviving toys, a Stag, Wolf, Dog, and Owl, all designed after the patronus of each member of the Marauders as well as Lily's owl patronus. The stuffed animal rat however did not fair so well not only was the enchantment on it gone but it also was heavily damaged. The surviving stuffed animals did seem to be trying to destroy the rest of it, which Sirius found both amusing and suspicious.
After collecting everything Sirius returned to his motorcycle and replaced the saddle bags. Ensuring his son was secure he took off into the sky leaving Hagrid to explain what had happened to Harry Potter.
Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall were both waiting for Hagrid to show up when the Knight Bus a triple decker purple bus appeared in Little Whinging right in front of Number 4 Privet Drive. Off of the Knight Bus came Hagrid.
Of all the means of transportation, I will never understand why anyone thought that bus was a good idea.
Professor McGonagall said frowning at it.
Hagrid at last, do you have him?
Professor Dumbledore asked.
No, I uh, I got stunned by Sirius Black and he er, took him away.
Hagrid answered.
There, Albus, a better home than this place.
Professor McGonagall said waving at Number 4 Privet Drive, He is after all Harry's godfather.
Professor Dumbledore was about to say something when Hagrid spoke, I don't think he was er, Harry's godfather, the last words he said before stunning me was, "Give me my son" after that I started thinking and it sort of made sense of some things, like Harry's black hair not matching James' but it matched Sirius' and it was also auburn red like his mum's and he was squirming like he was trying to get to Sirius when I kept him from him.
Dumbledore finally spoke, That explains quite a lot. I had suspected that James wasn't the father for some time, especially since Madam Pomfrey had reported that he had accidentally made himself infertile while at school, while that was kept secret, I believe that is why he and Lily grew distant for a time.
Well at least he doesn't have to stay with this dreadful family, now that Sirius has him.
Professor McGonagall said gesturing to Number 4.
Yes, this will work out better for Harry.
Professor Dumbledore explained, Severus had told me what he saw when he had gone to the house they were staying at, I immediately knew what Lily had done and knew that her sacrifice cast a form of protection that would stop even the killing curse itself, however that protection would need to be recharged every year through living with blood relatives, but since Sirius Black is one such relative and would indeed care for Harry far more than the Dursley's ever would even with the promises I was going to have Petunia make, so long as the place Harry calls home is that where the protection can not only remain upon him but also grow in its strength then I will not interfere with where he stays, I would send word to Sirius that Harry should not grow knowing he is famous, in fact it would be better to let everyone believe Harry Potter did indeed exist.
So, you're not mad at me?
Hagrid asked.
Hagrid, why would I ever be mad at you.
Professor Dumbledore said, And I believe we had stayed here long enough, let us go join the celebrations.
And with that the three of them left in their own manner, Dumbledore after setting the lights back that his put outer had put out before apparating with Hagrid, McGonagall by her cat animagus form. A week later the Daily Prophet (Wizarding newspaper) reported that Sirius Black had evaded ministry aurors after being cornered by Peter Pettigrew claiming he had been a Death Eater and Lord Voldemort's right-hand man as well as killed Harry Potter and muggle witnesses (prior to memory charms) had claimed he killed Pettigrew and 12 other muggles with a single curse.
